Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 2 of Vinland Saga!  Wow, we get to see a lot more of life on the farm in this one.  And apparently Einar and Thorfinn have the opportunity to get free doing this work, too.  I'd never wanna see Einar get bullied but at the same time, I don't want him to make things worse!!  :/  I guess it doesn't matter now that he's got his eye on the girl on the wagon.  Speaking of girls, WOW that's some pretty shady stuff that folks are trying in order to get close to Ketil's son!  Jeez!!!  He seems like an interesting character, and wow does he have a very different idea of war than our other friends.  Can't wait to see this all develop!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

I know history is supposed to be brutal and difficult but I’m glad for this seemingly lighter tone. For now I want to ease myself in. However I loved the accuracy put in. There’s no holding back and I’m told a lot of being put in, which is much appreciated. Four years and I’m still remembering the previous heinous acts from last season. I’m not sure if that Olmar guy is meant to be funny, but he was funny.

Also I’ve noticed the light change but don’t worry you still look fabu✨

This is a great episode. I think saying this season has the sad vibes is accurate. I love how much you love Einar it’s wholesome. Not all but many of the episodes start with the opening which I like. Yeah earning your freedom is not uncommon the thing I can compare to is indentured servitude in the 19th century but I’m sure people in the comments can explain things like that better. It’s interesting to see how different Thorfinn is compared to season one in this somewhat awkward 1st conversation with Einar. Because in of S1 after his dad’s death his voice acting was often rough & angry/screamy and now he is very soft-spoken/calm as well as seeming to not care/not be very present. And then we get to see exactly how much work clearing this forest & farming it will take & even though this will give them the opportunity to be free the task of doing it feels truly daunting with a nice bit of scale shown. Really interesting to see Thorfinn teaching someone when it comes to cutting down trees because it’s not something you could really imagine happening in S1. I love that there is music with a different feel/tone to it than the 1st season in this episode because even though I think the music was incredible in S1 it’s nice to get calming/daily life music like when they are working in this episode. The music just works well for being around nature & for people working/farming around nature. It’s not that the retainers completely ate Einar’s lunch they just ate most of it and left him & Thorfinn with what was left which is clearly not enough. And we get to see the horrible situation of the bullying from the retainers as another example of people finding a sick sense of joy out and looked of having power over others. Also I’m glad that there are other comments that can explain how things on a farm like this work better than I can. What I would compare the retainers pushing their job onto Thorfinn & Einar is like what some people have gone through during group projects at school when one person has to do all the work because no one else’s helping which sucks LOL. I love how the animation reflects/emphasizes how hard manual labor like this is with their veins and facial expressions as as well as the amazing yells of exertion. I think you are on the right track talking about Thorfinn not having much life in him because of how his eyes look, how he seems to not care that much about what he’s doing (maybe just wanting to have something to do where he doesn’t have to think much) as well as not having energy to stand up for himself. Which makes the contrast between Einar & Tthorfinn really good/interesting with Einar having a lot of righteous anger about unfairness & having an intense drive. Also they are both right about why they should or should not undo the tell Ketil about what’s going on with the retainers it’s a complicated situation. And then we get to see the moment a man fall in love LOL & I like the sweet music that plays. It’s funny to see Thorfinn teasing him a bit because it’s unexpected. I love seeing how different Ketil is from the wealthy of this era with him working the land himself as well as how he treats his workers as equals with how he talks. I think it’s a sign of good writing that you can quickly tell that Olmar is a son having an argument with his father just from the way they were talking. Also I love Olmar’s voice acting. The reason he couldn’t draw his sword is because it’s physically impossible to do that when it’s on your back which is why swords are usually on the hip he just wanted to look cool LMAO. I love that we get this quiet moment of Olmar just talking/thinking about things to get to know him more. Even if it was something that happened during this time it’s gross to see this girl’s parents using her to try to get up in the world. Her parents definitely told her to do this but from my perspective her reaction says that she also cared about him & that’s sad if so. You can see that a part of him does care about the farm with the quiet way he reacts to the 2 guys walking over the wheat which goes against what he was taught. Without spoiling I think Olmar is 1 of the most interesting new characters introduced this season. I love the immediate comparison/parallel between Olmar & Thorfinn when he was a child when it comes to how they view war/being a warrior. And I think after everything Thorfinn has been through he completely agrees with what Einar says about warriors being beasts having witnessed & been a part of that kind of destruction/suffering in the past. Which is also interesting because Askeladd at 1 point talked about a similar thing. You can feel the weight of that final scene. I love what you said about Thorfinn having been so focused on his vengeance in S1 he wasn’t able to think about the terrible things he did/was helping happen & any remorse he was feeling until this part of his life & I think one catalyst is Einar. Although another is definitely having a lot of time to think with all of this manual labor. Finally I think there is something endearing about a character like Olmar. Yeah, understandable is a good word. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
