Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 5 of Vinland Saga!  OH DANG!!!
Watching Canute coolly and efficiently rise to power was really something!  Like he doesn't even need to start big battles to get what he wants.  And he did it in pretty record time too!
You just know I was dying the whole time because of his voice haha!  I'm excited but scared for our stories to intersect, but for now I guess I'll just be patient and know that Canute is the true King!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

This is a really great episode for getting caught up with what’s been going on with Canute. I like the way the flashback was done here with him thinking about what happened at the end of last season because of the slight differences like the sunlight reflecting off of the sword into his eyes and Askeladd looking at him. I think the way this episode showed the devastation of war was well done with the displacement, destruction and death. I love how he isn’t avoiding the fact of his and his soldiers’s role in this war. Even if it’s ruthless & brutal I love the way he’s against traditional aspects of war because of his desire to create a paradise after how his character developed last season as well as how he deals with people who disobey his orders. I like the value he puts on discipline when talking about his soldiers because from what we learned about his life it sounded like he had to often practice discipline himself. I’m sorry but Gunnai pushing responsibility for killing the disobedient soldiers onto a random soldier is funny. It’s interesting to hear Canute talk about how a person’s character good or bad does not mean they can’t be useful when you think about the way Askeladd often utilized people. I agree it's always a joy to see Thorkell & his intense personality. I love his entrance it’s just so extra LOL. Culture strip Such an interesting interaction to see someone who loves war as much as him talk to Canute who hates the evils of the world but is willing to work within that world to make it better that you can’t avoid bloodshed. It’s also interesting to see the comparison we kind of get between someone who has to have a complicated mindset who thinks of the big picture like Canute & someone with such a simple mindset like Thorkell. Interesting to think about how a simpler outlook can often lead to a happier life. I don’t know how much money the treasurer this Earl was offering would be today but you have to think it would still be a lot. Canute just walking on top of the pile of gold & just saying it’s nothing with that facial expression is one of the most savage things I have seen in a show I have watched. Also I love that the piece of he picks up is a rosary since he was a Christian especially when he is rebelling against the idea of the Christian God wanting to make his own paradise on earth. It is pretty nasty to outright imply that this Earl is betraying his king & the danger/punishment that could go along with that but I love seeing him be this strong. The sarcastic comment about Ethelred being understanding while meeting the opposite is really funny. He makes a great point that a king who abandons his country/people when it/they need him is probably not someone the people should have trust in as a king talking about how that doesn’t seem like a person worth following. I love how the episode subtly shows us that Canute tried to poison the king but failed because he doesn’t understand/know the king himself and so decides to get someone else to do it the Earl who knows the king better & is able to get closer to him because of his station with him just holding out the silver cup. I appreciate that they show the Earl standing up for himself even if he could not stand up to Canute’s insane resolve/determination. I love how he uses a symbolic/metaphorical gesture to display his real power & wealth. And what a terrifying way to do so by showing exactly what he could do to this place. I feel bad laughing at a guy going through a lot in this moment but the Earl’s eyes here are hilarious. I love the shot of Canute in front of the fire it’s as awesome as it is chilling & the animation is great. I think I can point it out at this point but I love how whenever there is narration about a real historical event it’s done by Thors VA basically making Thorfinn’s father the narrator which is interesting and really cool. It’s so impressive that he was able to take over & become king so quickly but it’s hilarious that Thorkell is basically the grumpy Cat because Canute was able to mostly avoid all out war. Also what a statement to have your Royal attire be all black. I love the grand music in this episode which works with the subject matter at play. Finally you’re right you shouldn’t underestimate brute strength but you also shouldn’t underestimate cold, calculated intelligence/strategy. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Also compelling is the perfect word for this show.
