Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 10 of Vinland Saga!  Whoa, catching up some more with Canute was really intense in this one!  Apologies for my struggle to keep up with the timeline, but don't worry, I still got the full emotional weight of all that was going on here!  Canute poisoning his brother is dark....especially when his brother so clearly cared for him and wanted something different for him.  If Thorfinn is climbing out of the depths of his violent past, I feel like Canute is descending into a very dark, murky and death-filled future!!!!  What a development!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The episode begins with Thorfinn and Einar cutting down trees, shirtless, while Melissa admires the “craftsmanship…” - and then one of them said yare yare… you know where I’m going with this. “Was that a JoJo reference?” Had to get one dig in for the weekend. Anyway, they’re talking about what they want to do after they’re free. The thing is, they really aren’t sure - once you get in a certain groove or lifestyle it’s kind of “normal” for you - even if it’s something like slavery. Granted, they’ve been working towards a goal, but they’re both a little shocked to find out they can get freedom after planting. It’s kind of like what happened in Camp Camp last week: Space Kid got to the moon finally. Now what? The meat of this episode, just as last time we focused on Thorfinn’s state of mind, we’re getting a window into Canute. Neither of these men are the same person they were in Season 1 - they’re like ships crossing in the night. Before I forget, you asked about sending a message: if you look at the distance between Iceland and Denmark on a map and it’s all ocean sailing - no one’s delivering anything to that area without a real good reason to go. It’s far too isolated. Canute’s gotten a lot darker from his initial ideals - it’s kind of like that old saying, you can’t achieve your dream without getting your hands dirty sometimes. Regarding Harald and Canute’s previous dynamic, there was a debate over who would be king after Sweyn, but it sounds like the debate was coming more from all of the citizenry than the brothers themselves. Sweyn did mention in S1 that the crown he wire was cursed - so just as Askeladd has become a twisted guide for Thorfinn, Sweyn is filling a role of similar value for Canute - in his own kind, anyway. And he’s gotten even more underhanded. I imagine Wulf was the one in charge of slowly poisoning Harald, Canute said “thank you for looking after him in my absence.” Hmm… Canute’s got his own demons to deal with, clearly - and he’s holding both crowns. He got what he wanted, yet he says “this is nothing.” It’s like the same dilemma as what our fathers were thinking about at the beginning of the episode. Everyone seems to be getting what they want. Now what? One important story point to remember: Ketil told Thorfinn and Einar they wouldn’t be freed, until they finished seeding and he himself returned from visiting Harald. Considering everything we know that’s going on, especially with Canute’s visions and conversations, I’ll repeat what I told you - a lot of things are about to come to… a head. 😉

Hahahaha I'd say both the ripped muscles and the yare yare are a Jojo reference :P You can't blame me for enjoying the scenery!!!! I totally get how it would be a bit of a shock to all of a sudden change lifestyles. Haha it's totally like Space Kid :P They've both changed so much! Ohhhh thanks for clarifying about why a message wouldn't work. Yeah Canute had to get his hands REAL dirty here. Right, I was surprised to see that the brothers themselves were close and loving. Oof, Sweyn being the Askelladd here fits so well. Yeeahhhh that's kind what I was thinking about Wulf too. Yeah Canute got what he wanted, but what now? Like you said. Hahahahahaha omg Yang would be proud!!! :P

I think this is an incredible episode. I think it’s awesome that we have a relatively long time skip because we get to see how much amazing progress they have made being so very close to freedom. I love the quiet conversation of Thorfinn & Einar just talking about what they might want to do after they are free. I like how realistic it is that they are unsure of this specially with the offer Ketil gives them. I think it’s sweet and heartwarming how much caring Einar shows towards Arnheid wishing for her freedom. It’s crazy that Thorfinn has been thinking about wanting to rid the world of war & slavery simply because of how monumental a task/undertaking that would be. I love the way this parallels Canute wanting to build a utopia. It really does show kindness that Ketil is going to free them early. I think their celebratory reactions after the shock wears off are adorable & funny. I think it’s a great show of friendship/camaraderie that they both worked on & then pushed the last tree down together. I think it’s great that as soon as perspective switches to Canute the intensity increases by a lot. I think a lot of people were surprised by Canute’s new look & I definitely saw some people who found him attractive. I like how we see all the books & papers showing his increased responsibilities now that he is a king as well as just continuing to increase his knowledge probably of strategy and the country he rules. I think a lot of the ways he acts like talking about the kindness of his brother & how his brother helped and played with him was influenced by what he himself had done to his brother. It was interesting getting to meet one of Harald’s high-ranking soldiers with how no-nonsense he is & I just think the name Wulf is cool. One of the balls appearing as his father’s severed head definitely represents the guilt Canute feels for poisoning his brother but might also represent the darker things he has been going through. I didn’t know for sure but once they talked about Harald being sick I had bad feeling about it. I agree that a good amount of this feels like GOT because while I believe some of that story is probably exaggerated it’s relatively realistic & I would guess is based on historical knowledge from the author. It’s cool to learn that Canute has a sister which is almost certainly a historical fact. I don’t know much more than you history wise but I have heard the historical bullet points are accurate like the brother Kings ruling different countries & the kings of England who died but yeah from what I know a lot of in between stuff like Canute poisoning people are just based on theories of historians or are fictional based on the author’s interpretation of historical people or on the direction he wants the character/story to go. Like Thorfinn is the name of a real person but almost nothing is known about him which is our why the author made him the main character & created a story for him. It’s so sad that we learn what he did to his brother not after we see the flashback of the love they shared as well as how the brother tried to help and teach him things. I like that the brother tries to point out that Ragnar is over protective because other people particularly Askeladd noticed that in season one & realized it was bad for Canute in the long run. Also baby Canute is adorable. You can clearly see how much the two brothers care about each other with this short interaction & that is not a lie/act on Canute’s part but sadly the caring is something he counted on because knowing his brother he most likely had a feeling his brother would give him the crown of Denmark. It’s so disturbing for Canute to start seeing & hearing his father out of nowhere like this. I like the concept of the curse of the crown returning from season one where something like ambition can change someone for the worse it’s dark but really well-written. It’s sad to me that because of the road Canute is on wanting to create a utopia he’s suffering a lot mostly in my opinion because of the awful things he believes are necessary to reach his goal. The imagery of the world tree from Norse mythology behind a much older Canute with soldiers all around & the world breaking is really impactful as a representation of the darkness/suffering he could potentially face. It’s not surprising he had a number of being in shock after that. Also the voice acting of King Sweyn in this episode was amazing. It’s rough seeing how weak Harald is here when we see how strong he looked in the past. It is genuinely ironic but depressing as well that the ghost of his father is the only person Canute can speak to candidly. Once again I don’t think any of the supernatural stuff is actually happening but it doesn’t matter if it’s real because it’s real to the people it’s being experienced by. Having another flashback knowing that Harald is going to die soon because of his actions probably makes it hurt more. More irony that Harald wanted Canute to grow up and become strong since it ended up getting him killed & because based on his accomplishments Canute has become strong. What a bittersweet note to end the episode on these episodes really help you connect with his character. Also I can talk a little more about the ending & opening now. I love how parts of the ending show Thorfinn’s lowest moment with Einar seeming to bring him up out of that. I love how the opening shows all the different looks Thorfinn & Einar have had in the season up until this episode. Also a lot of the symbolism of the opening makes even more sense after episode nine. One of my favorite parts of the opening is the icebreaking animation representing the two of them tilling the fields. About your and thoughts basically Canute & Thorfinn are on very similar roads that mirror each other but are divergent. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
