Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 13 of Vinland Saga!  Wow guys, this one actually had some moments that were bordering on sweet and cute and lighthearted!!!  But of course, there's tons of "dark clouds" surrounding any moments of happiness.  First we have poor Sverkel not doing too well, but the way that brings everyone together is actually kinda nice???  Snake reading to him, Arnheid cooking for him and everyone eating together, etc.  And then of course, we learn the connection between the slave at the beginning and our current story....!!!  DANG you guys!!!  Did we REALLY need one more thing?!!?!?  Can't wait to see where this goes, but I'm scared!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

No! Mel, grab a life jacket! Our ship is going down! 🚢 🫨 I cannot believe that end. Dang it. Well, Armheid is a sweet pea. Of course, she had a husband. But still. 😩😭🥹 The old man does have a heart. He's just a little cranky, but he means well. Thorfinn and the Bible thing is going full circle. The end game for this series may be the change in the landscape. We're going from one era and entering the next. From all these horrendous actions happening to lesser daily battles, which is a massive difference for these people. It's closer to how we live today except purer because they don't have HBO yet.

OMG noooo!!!! I'll go down with the ship though!! Omg right?! I know, of course we would find all this out. The Bible passage really does bring things full circle. I think that's a great point, there's a chance that we're really watching a transition to another era here. LOL so true about HBO, omg :P

I love this episode but like a lot of people it wasn’t what I was expecting but that’s a good thing. I didn’t notice your necklace until I was rewatching it’s an awesome reference looks nice too. The opening scene is brutal with really amazing animation with the fire & dark shadows. Even without the context of this scene I like that we are able to understand the basics of what’s going on a slave rebelling against their master. I think it makes sense to think this might have been Einar for a second because I think it’s very on purpose that he & Gardar have similarities it’s not a coincidence on the authors part IMO because of the connections the two characters have with Arnheid. And it really highlights how awful or to just not miserable slavery can be for someone depending on the master because even though I don’t like saying it like this Thorfinn & Einar were lucky to have the master they had as Gardar talks about the suffering a slave goes through that you can’t understand if you haven’t lived as a slave. It is chilling to see this master begging for his life as Gardar just watches. Unfortunately for him as Gardar points out a master allows a slave to live but can take their life away as well. I can’t talk much about the opening until later on in the season but I love the song which was sung by the band that did the first opening from season one & the animation is incredible. I was talking to someone & their opinion is that the first opening of this season has a better song and even though I think this new opening song “Paradox” is awesome I agree with him because the first song of the season was better at representing the emotional aspect of this season. Although the person I talked to & I agree that the opening visuals of this opening are the better visuals because the animation is amazing. Although one thing I can say is that I love the religious symbolism in this opening. I love this very honest conversation of what Thorfinn & Einar want to do once they are free. I love the display of Einar’s love for Arnheid here but what I really love is how his desire isn’t for what you could view as a “selfish” reason like wanting reciprocation of his feelings but simply because he wants the best for her. We have heard once that Sverkel had in the past collapsed on his field & Snake being around was the only reason he ended up being okay so I like that because of that Snake has a bad feeling in this episode that it might have happened again. It’s sad to see Sverkel in this state when he has always been so strong but I’m glad he’s alive because he’s a great character. I love how the people around him bring a lot of life & fun to Sverkel’s life even if he would never admit he was enjoying it. I love how genuinely hilarious & wholesome this dinner of a lot of different people is you could almost mistake them for a family although they might as well be with how they interact. Also anime food will never fail to look delicious. It makes me so happy to see Thorfinn happy & smiling/laughing. I love this quiet moment of Arnheid & Einar talking about how nice Sverkel is as he is grumpy about it being able to hear them as well as the two of them realizing how much like freedom this meal was like. I think Fox talking about Gardar does a good job of emphasizing how dangerous he is as well as the complicated situation that has arisen. It feels like it’s a rare attitude for someone to have in this era with Snake disapproving of slaves being treated poorly when saying that the master got what he deserved. I love that Snake is being smart with his caution about this situation. It’s kind of crazy how stupid some of Snake’s man are. At least you can give it to Fox that he tried to keep the other guys on track. It’s really interesting to see Thorfinn becoming interested in Christianity which makes a lot of sense with his focus on the idea of rebirth as well as how lessons in the Bible resonate with the lessons he now remembers from his father. I like how they chose a specific passage from the Bible that integrates well with the story so far. I think Snake doesn’t want to sell the Bible because it’s a valuable but I think it’s a way to hide his real feelings about Sverkel as well. I think it’s interesting that the show focuses on how Arnheid’s weathered hands showing what she has been through before her husband from her past shows up. The shot of Gardar on the rising up horse is great. I think it’s interesting that the story is adding complications to what’s down in going on but I understand being upset because of how this might end up affecting the characters. I have to say I think it was great getting to see you trying to figure out where this part of the story is going with the bombshell at the end of episode because sometimes the best part of a story is when you can’t figure out where it’s going. And of course when things start to kick off storm clouds roll in which is also probably foreshadowing for the king coming soon. Also I wanted to say that while I always think the comments people leave on your reactions great & interesting for me the comments have been even more interesting for this specific show. Awesome reaction, thoughts & keep up the great work. :-) <3

I know, this ep really came out of nowhere but in a good way! OMG I'm so glad you noticed the necklace, I was wondering if anyone would hehe! ^_^ Thank you! Yeah I think you're right about the similarities to Einar, that was likely intentional. I can imagine that Gardar probably suffered a lot as a slave. :( You're so right that this really shows the reality of many slave experiences, as Thorfinn's and Einar's are not typical. It is like having your whole life taken away :( Even the "better" experiences still aren't freedom, as Arnheid was pointing out. That's so cool about the band for the opening! I've gotta agree about the first one, although I think this one is really good as well. OMG I love the dinner scene, it was so sweet, peaceful and fun! It's hard to see Sverkel like this for sure but I think, whether he admits it or not, this environment is good for him. Anime food is always mouth-watering!!! I love the little moment with Einar and Arnheid, ahhh the last time I really got to enjoy my ship lol. And again, the discussion about how it came close to being free was so good. It really shows that even under these circumstances, the writing is on the wall 99% of the time for slaves. Yeah that's true that Snake's opinions are very "progressive" for this time period. Fox really did try in this case! It really makes total sense that Thorfinn would be interested in the message of Christianity, since it resonates so much with his newfound values and what Thors tried to teach him in the past. Yeah my first impression was that Snake was trying to hide his feelings, it makes a lot of sense that the Bible is valuable too though. I'm so glad you enjoyed me trying to figure it out!!! I agree, the twists/intrigue/etc. are what really makes it fun sometimes. Aww I'm glad you feel that way too about the comments here for VS!!! I really appreciate your comments as well, I'm sorry for being behind on them but I'm enjoying catching up and reading your feedback! Even when I can't write quite as much back I read through and get a lot out of the details you share. Thank you so much for being so awesome and supportive!!! So happy you enjoyed my reaction!!! ^_^
