Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 18 of Vinland Saga!  OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  This one made me so SO angry!!!!!!!!!  First, before I rant, I just want to praise sweet wonderful Thorfinn (and Einar) for giving such deep thought to how to do things a better way.  Ok now I just wanna talk about HOW DONE I am with Ketil, how horrible Arnheid's life is and how she needs a win, and how I honestly won't care if Canute takes out Ketil at this point.  Like seriously?!!?!?  I get that he's broken and in a bad place, but this is NOT love and I'm sorry but like everyone on this show is hurting, that doesn't mean you get to beat a pregnant woman >:(((((((((((((((((  Uggghhhh!!!!  Here's hoping Thorfinn and Einar grab her and everyone decent on this farm and get outta here during the mayhem that's to come!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Goodness wow! I did not see that coming. Remember him helping out on the fields and now everything is crumbling. Now I’m wondering hard about him. At the end he’s getting prepped for battle. I get he’s upset but what does mean? Was he actually a beast at fighting? Hm. Man poor Arnheid. This was so foul. Seeing her all bruised up just made me feel queasy. She doesn’t deserve any of this. I can’t take this week’s episode. That was a lot. That was too much. I’m so upset. 😭

I wish things had gone better in this episode but the topics it covered were very well done. It’s a rough first watch though. When you said you wanted Arnheid to get a win I internally said oof. It was interesting to see Canute’s contemplations on the way to the farm. I like how he wants them to just submit to his authority showing that he still would prefer to not use violence even if he will because of how it shows that his goal of a better world hasn’t been lost in the darkness surrounding him. It’s honestly shocking to see how broken Ketil is at this point with no light in his eyes just a blank look. Yeah, Thorgil isn’t evil but he does take too much enjoyment in the violence/the thought of battle. And he says exactly what Olmar has probably been thinking this is what you wanted a real battle right although he means it in a positive way when it’s definitely negative for Olmar. Also telling a bunch of regular farmers to ready themselves for battle while very much looking the least threatening people ever just doing their work is crazy. And they must be so confused as well since everything was fine when Ketil left. And at this point all Ketil wants is Arnheid because he is at one of the worst points of his life completely broken and without hope so it makes complete sense he would want to go to one of his only comforts in the world. As he constantly asks where are you I’m like “yeah, about that…”. It’s understandable that his wife would be done with the whole Arnheid thing it makes sense that she would not be gentle when telling him what happened. Also the way she talks about Arnheid definitely reflects the attitudes at the time the wife most likely thinks she’s ungrateful because she was treated “well” for a slave by Ketil & still chose to escape not knowing her “place” which is a messed up way of thinking but not surprising. it probably would have gone badly no matter what but I think being told what happened while he was gone while being in the worst mental state of his life affected just how badly he reacted to this news & treated Arnheid. And then we see the violence start to emerge since this is him being pushed to the absolute edge having what he has built up taken away which is triggering the deep-seated trauma of losing the one he loved so long ago. I like how this conversation among the guests makes it even more clear than before that they are woefully unprepared for an actual large-scale assault. I feel for the two of them worrying about what punishment Arnheid is going to receive after what happened especially when they have no idea what is happening. I love this very philosophically hard thing Thorfinn & Einar have here. It’s one thing to want violence to be a last resort but it’s another to find the choices & answers to actually accomplish nonviolent arm solutions. It’s very much change the world or create your own place where you can make your dreams a reality like you were talking about. I really feel for Leif not even being down allowed to see Thorfinn because Snake hasn’t been informed of the deal. Also you know it’s bad when Pater is worried about Ketil’s reaction & wants Arnheid’s freedom to be bought. And then we get to the really dark second half of the episode as the author made sure we understand the consequences of what has been going on. I think this entire part really wants to focus on not just the plight of women in this age but also the darkness that exists somewhere in almost everyone just in varying degrees. It’s disgusting what this guest tried to do to Arnheid here as she is defenseless it’s hard to watch. I was hopeful but I honestly wasn’t surprised at Ketil’s actions here because while I was thinking about the show in the week between the last episode & this one I got to thinking about what happens when a person is pushed far enough & this is when we find out and after everything Ketil went through I think he qualifies as pushed to the limit. Before I continue to talk about this I want to make it clear that while you can understand why he is like this & does these horrible things it does not condone any of what he does here. This is a brutal scene to have to watch Arnheid beaten so badly especially knowing how much her child means to her. At this point I think Ketil’s thought process with not believing it’s his child is that with his trust being broken so often why should we believe anything anyone else says. I really like this focus on broken trust & how damaging it can be. Sometimes people who have had their trust broken often enough can end up doing hurtful things to protect themselves which is very important thing to think about. I think people should always try to understand why people do the things they do & are who they are. It’s unfortunate that no matter how many good traits he has & having been influenced by Sverkel the main emotion that makes up who Ketil is is fear which unfortunately led to this situation where ownership of things was all that he cared about. Like you say it was all about him Arnheid never entered the equation. He needs things that are literally unable to be taken away from him whether it’s someone he can love or wealth. In terms of the time it makes sense that this could happen but it doesn’t make it any easier to witness. Even though this is expected treatment for slaves at this time I think this is too far for most slave owners. While there were slave owners who ended up killing their slaves in my mind even when slave owners treated slaves in awful ways I think most slave owners would still rather keep slaves alive. I was so thankful that Snake showed up to stop this & was able to have somewhat snap him out of it. I love that we get more of the nuance of Snake with the serious and sad look he has here. And then we get to the key word that tells you what you need to know about Ketil belongs when talking about her but it applies to many things in his life. It is terrible that he is unwilling to let Arnheid go no matter what. Also I hate to make you more upset/angry but there were some people & I am 100% certain it was a very vocal minority were trying to defend his actions & I have no idea what the arguments were but must have been crazy stuff. I feel so bad for everyone here with Arnheid in a terrible state & Thoifinn & Einar having to learn/see what happened with the awful knowledge that there was nothing they could have done. And K is filled with a strong & almost insane level of determination to protect his farm no matter what even taking up a sword which you would never expect from him. Also Pater is so good doing whatever he could to treat her numerous injuries. While much of the blame for what happened lies with Ketil it must be pointed out that this specific result was caused by many people’s actions the wife, Canute, Snake & even Arnheid & those helping her. Of course the reasons for these actions were very varied some had good reasons, some had bad & some had nuanced reasons but they will all have to live with the actions they took & decisions made some sooner than others. Episodes don’t get easier from here but maybe there is hope. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Omg I know, this is rough and definitely not a win for Arnheid like I was hoping for :( I never thought we'd see Ketil like this at all! And yeah, I like that Thorgil's not all "bad", like even for the type of character he is he's somewhat layered. The poor farm folk just being told they have to go into battle, omg! Ketil just desperately needs Arnheid for his own comfort so it's a really bad time to break the news to him so harshly like the wife did. I get how she feels as a wife, but the way she talks about Arnheid as a slave is just so messed up! Like literally any of them could be slaves if their lives had been a little different. I love Thorfinn and Einar's conversation!!! It's great to see them thinking so above and beyond. The beating scene was just too much, I honestly didn't think it was gonna go that way! I was being naive, and I really don't think I understood just how Ketil really sees Arnheid. And then he didn't believe her about the baby....it was just too awful! Pater being worried should've been a big red flag. I felt bad for Leif too! And OMG the guy guarding Arnheid, just disgusting!!!! This poor girl hasn't known a moment of peace in years. That's the thing, I think this was really just all about Ketil and how far gone he got after having to build up everything in his life around him in a way that "protects" him after experiencing the loss of a loved one. But yeah, he really never saw anything more in Arnheid than his own comfort, he never saw her needs/motivations/etc. It's awful to think that this was a commonplace way to treat slaves. I was glad that Snake showed up! That's true that just from a technical standpoint, there were many actions that led up to this point. Whether or not those actions were justified is subjective, although I think most of us would agree on things like Thorfinn/Einar trying to help being a good thing, Arnheid wanting to protect her husband is a good thing, and the wife's words being a bad thing. But yeah, I see what you mean. What an episode!!! My heart can't take much more of that!!
