The saying "nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs" (or sometimes 'house') is much, much older than the X-men; Rogue says it because it was already a well known southernism by the 80s. In terms of actual references, apparently Tennessee Ernie Ford said it on the radio in 1956, and it was used a few years prior (1953) in a syndicated newspaper column called "Senator Soaper". The column might be the first publication of the phrase, but it was already floating around the American south and Texas by that point.

If you find someone who only listens to scattered clips of this podcast, I am 100% prepared to do a hangout to bring them up to speed. "Ronan Explains Jay And Miles Explains The X-Men"

Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men

I feel great about that famous Cartoon Rogue line having such a long and storied legacy behind it! (And I'm genuinely impressed with your familiarity with its history!) -M

Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men

And then once your hangout gets popular enough, someone will start a hangout to explain *it*, and then HOW DEEP DOES THIS RABBIT HOLE GO -M

Ha, well, most of that is just Google-fu to find out what previous folks have found out. I knew it was a fairly old phase since my grandma knew it, but finding an actual publication reference is the hard part.
