Q&A Elle B April 2018

Similar to John but I HATE it when characters have a totally unnatural conversation as a thinly veiled way of just telling you the plot, or background on a character..... “Hey Jim, how was your day as a rogue private detective? It must be a tough job what with your debilitating addiction to prescription painkillers” ...“Yeah Pete, it’s hard but I’ve got a really interesting case coming up that I think you’ll be really excited to hear about, it’s really taking my mind off my Dad dying last week under suspicious circumstances”....Ugh, yawn. Let us work some things out for ourselves.

“Let them be ugly!” 😂 The strong woman formed by tragedy trope is also one of my least favorites. Another one is when a character is about to tell another character something important and they either get interrupted or say “it can wait”. Like, no! Tell them now! And John I feel ya that one. YA movie adaptations are the worst about it. Good choices guys!

The girl or guy who is sick and risks their health for true love. The person whose family or friends are murdered and they take it upon themselves to get revenge. When a character gets home in a movie and doesn't lock the door behind them. When a character performs a few seconds of CPR and suddenly the person they're trying to save wakes up. When a character tells another character, I have something really important to tell you and they get killed before they can tell the important fact. The gay character who is the best friend ever, but doesn't fall in love or get laid. The character who runs for their life in a scary movie, but trips and falls.

Haha yuuuuup. And there's a lot of that around. That's part of why A Quiet Place wound up being so refreshing - nice to really get back to something that's a *visually* told story instead of just having characters dump info on you every 10 minutes haha. It's easy to scoff when you're in school and you've got a cool idea to get out, but I've really come to appreciate showing rather than telling in the past several years.

Thanks, Elle! 😊 And YES!! Have definitely seen some bad examples of that. Sometimes life leaves things hanging or people get waylaid, but often times it just feels like the plot needs for them not to talk right now haha. No bueno. And I think it was the Immortal Instruments: City of Bones trailer that finally broke me on the YA tropes. And yes lol let people look ugly in ugly situations!!! lol

Heh. Horror flicks are guilty of a looot of these. 😅 And especially if you know CPR at all, it's pretty hit-or-miss as to which movies get it right or... not haha. And that's a good call as well - waiting on more movies to start A) having more gay characters in general and B) presenting them like.. y'know, characters, rather than just magical quippy companions. Good picks, man! Appreciate your feedback as always! :)
