Finally, this episode.... I remember being speechless when L died. But it is a magnificent scene. And there are so many in this episode like you said, the music, the visuals, everything is just stunning. The scene on the steps is meant to be a reference to Jesus/Judas, when Jesus washes Judas’ feet before he is betrayed. I personally think at that point L knew that he was going to die and that Light was Kira. I also think when L was on the roof talking about the bells that was him accepting it. And him looking at Light as he was dying and seeing Light smirk was his final confirmation... like “I was right.” There’s probably way better analyses of this scene (and anime as a whole) than what I can offer lol so maybe when you’ve finished you should scope them out.

The scene where L dies is arguably better executed than in the manga. The "silence" is so fitting and more heartbreaking. If memory serves me right, we hear L's thoughts as he's dying in Light's arms in the manga - nothing major, just a few sentences along the line of "I knew it".

I honestly think this was the best directed Death Note episode, fuck I would even go as far to say that it was one of the better directed episodes in anime . Just on visuals alone, there was so much extra detail put into environments and characters with fantastic shadowing and depth and even animation fluidity did not suffer . It just felt like the staff went all out as far as production values go. And the use of sound was just fantastic, it was used effectively . Especially use of silence , really great . I think L knew that he had barely any time left in this world, just the way he talked and behaved seemed very intentional. And fuck Light, lol/ Honestly after this episode i barely remember anything about the show
