I think it was really daring to have an episode in a children/family show that focussed on the death penalty. Enjoyed your discussion. I think Captain Jack is never going to be that fish out of water guy. Like the Doctor, his charisma carries him through. I believe that having an LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 character on the show at some point was quite important to Russell T Davies - again, pretty groundbreaking on a mainstream kids/family show back in 2005. I give up - I enjoy the trivia, but am resorting to watching on mute. Perhaps you could vary it and do it in a mock Indian accent? Or maybe stereotypical Japanese, getting all those Rs and Ls wrong.

You are very insightful and intelligent gentlemen. I do really enjoy your reactions and the discussion afterward is especially top quality. But I'm just going to skip past the fun facts at the beginning now. 😒

2021-07-15 04:46:18 I'm gonna take this comment & the above as indication that the bit has outstayed its welcome 😅😓sorry for hurting your ears, BUT very glad you were still able to enjoy the episode/review at least. Really enjoyed this one!

That's a great point - I hadn't actually thought about it in exactly those terms, but it is a pretty sophisticated argument, given the roots of the show... still, though, thought it was really cool they chose to go there, AND add some heft to a not-so-beloved arc in the process. I keep having to remind myself of when these started to air. INSANE to think these are 15 years old now 😮how different things were back in '05.. Did the old Who series ever touch upon LGBTQ themes, or was the addition of Jack a long-overdue step for the show? Either way, respect to Russell Davies for the addition! Just a couple episodes & Jack's already becoming a highlight. As for the triviaaaa, duly noted - we'll mix it up. Apologies for hurting y'all's ears with that. We'll see how many more accents we can throw in there... or none lol. We'll see what the vibe is next shoot 😅

Some Whovians would be able to tell you definitively, but I'm pretty sure that having an actual LGBTQ character was a first. Normally that sort of character, if on TV at all, would be only on 'adult' TV. Queer as Folk in 1999 (also by RTD, which I did not realize until I looked it up just now!) was the nearest to bringing it 'mainstream', and that was certainly not family friendly or anywhere near prime time. Having a 'masculine' gay character (as opposed to the stereotype camp that most TV tended to show if it used a gay character at all) was also a big step. Looking back, the variety in Season 1 is incredible. Plastic monsters, Dickens, the End ofthe World, childish farty aliens, classic Who villain (Dalek), reunion with a dead father, WWII mystery/adventure, and now death penalty. And that's without the last 2 episodes. It's difficult to believe how underrated Season 1 is.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_Offences_Act_1967 Basically from 1967 the law kept changing to being more and more tolerant of gay people, before 67 you would be arrested if you were found to be homosexual and often given the choice of prison or chemical castration to try and change your sexuality, but it wasn’t until 2000 (only 5 years before this episode) that the age of consent was lowered to 16 the same as for heterosexuals. You until later that year were not allowed to have a third individual present whilst engaging in an “act” whether that be kissing or having sex and you were banned from sharing a hotel room. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28 That one is perhaps the most fucked up example, and you can thank thatcher and the tories for that. Section 28 was introduced in 1986 and only repealed in 2000 in Scotland and 2003 in the rest of the UK. It basically banned schools and teachers, councils, libraries etc from teaching and “promoting the homosexual agenda and the promoting the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship” basically meaning if you grew up in that time period you had no access to any LGBT education, you were told it was wrong and a sin, you had no access to any inclusive groups and you were obviously terrified to come out so everyone had to pretend or be horrifically treated by pretty much everyone. And the thing is aswell it’s not like google and phones/computers were a thing so unlike today you can’t search up what your sexuality/gender might be or be exposed to others like yourself with similar experiences, so you would be growing up knowing that you are different and being told that you are disgusting as a result and you wouldn’t know any different. And this is only 17 years ago. https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2018/05/24/what-was-section-28-homophobic-legislation-30-years-thatcher/ So yeah Captain Jack being LGBT would be a huge thing in 2005 and RTD is fantastic for not being scared to bring him in. Especially with him being played by John Barrowman who also happens to be LGBT. So yeah as I stated in the trivia for the Doctor Dances, there was an episode in the 80’s that was going to introduce an LGBT character in a positive manner but it got canned as it was “unsuitable for the general public/children due to its homosexual agenda” so whilst Dr who was trying to move in the right direction the BBC wasn’t quite there yet. Sorry if that’s a boring answer 😂 I’m just interested in it and also very annoyed by it. Being LGBT myself and having to deal with shit even 20 years later (when we’ve improved so much with Gay Marriage and adoption and for the most part Trans Rights) I cant help but feel emotional and angry for all the LGBT people that had to experience all that shite. And yeah people still have problems with LGBT characters being on the show including Captain Jack which I just can’t get my head around.

Furthermore, https://25yearslatersite.com/2019/06/16/doctor-who-russell-t-davies-lgbtq-legacy/ And the season finale for season 1 includes a major scene/step forward for what is considered okay in terms of LGBTQ+ representation on screen. Furthermore Torchwood is very very good with its representation, which you’ll find out if you watch/react to it. It’s also worth pointing out and commending that the show runners after RTD, Stephen Moffatt and Chris Chibnall continued and continue with this representation in Dr Who 👌

Obviously, this is 3 years late, so maybe pointless to say, but it's kind of a shame to me. I was really enjoying that aspect, especially as it devolved into worse and worse butcherings. Idk why, it was just so entertaining.
