Crazy when you think how long Gabriel has been here love the reveal also love that the boys characteristics match Michael and Lucifer. My favourite episode of the show tbh.

I mean...Sam and Dean identified The Trickster before they went into TV world. And Richard Speight Jr, is in the credits. So I don’t get the big deal about the previouslies (my term.)

Also: that was clearly Grey’s Anatomy: Dean pointed out Dr Ellen Piccolo (Ellen POMPEO plays Meredith Grey), Dr Wang (Cristina Yang on GA), the ghost “Johnny Drake” was Denny Drake, played by JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN...and the music! I personally think when they’re in the OR and the music changes to a smooth groove, they’re parodying Nip/Tuck for a minute. Love this episode, Charles Beeson is a great director, and y’all did it proud.

I just love the fact that they make a reference to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character in Grey's Anatomy, it breaks the fourth wall in such a bizarre way XD Also I just love Speight. Not just as the Trickster, but I think he does a great job in the directors chair. Anyway, loved your guys' reaction as always! Still holding out hope for two SPN's a week, but I'm just greedy like that :p

Oh, you're kidding me? Lost another comment.  Damn & Bugger! Okay, summary of what I said 1. Yeah, shame about the reference to Trickster in the credits. Otherwise you would have been much further into the "WTF is going on?" part of the episode before you realized what was happening. Our bad - we forgot to warn you about that as well. 2. Clever use of Castiel - although he only has a couple of lines, we see that Gabriel is much more powerful than him (he's an archangel), and at the end, we also get confirmation that it is in fact Gabriel (and not another trick), because Cas is able to identify him. 3. Love that, as with the best of the "out there" SPN episodes, they manage to tie in important serious plot arc elements with the humour. 4. Most of all, you forgot to mention in your comments that this episode is fucking HILARIOUS! Tends to be a toss up between this episode and one in Season 6 as all time fan favourites.

Actually, the episode starts off in TV world ("I'm gonna need a bigger mouth") and then moves to the modified intro sequence. So seeing the recap would already have given the game away. You don't see Richard Speight's name until the end of the modified credit sequence. If we had managed to warn the guys to try not to read the credits either, the "Incredible Hulk" sequence would also have been a WTF.

This is my favorite episode of the series. Not to say there won't be episodes better than this one later on, but to me just the concept and the humor and the main plot implications make this a perfect storm kind of episode. Like you said, having your cake and eating it too lol I actually forgot the Tricksters name appeared in the beginning credits. I remembered as they started and I was like damn. But the good thing is that it's not like a huge reveal in the episode the boys figure out it's him right away. The bugger part of the reason I did want you guys to skip the recap is as John mentioned, they lay the main story scenes thick on it. So you would know it somehow ties directly to the overarching plot. And I wanted that to be a surprise. I watched this episode live, and oh my God I almost walked away to go to the restroom when the "commercial" started. It would've worked if I hadn't noticed the CW tag on the bottom right of the screen was still visible during the commercial. So it made me hesitate and wow I lost it 😆😆😆 it was truly a great moment if you watched it live so good hahaha And yeah the actor for The Trickster really gets his time to shine here. Great performance on his end he really adds a lot of layers to the Trickster, AKA Gabriel. And as far as I know, I'm rusty on my Bible passages, Gabriel is supposed to be one of the most gentle or earnest angels, I believe. A truth teller. So with that lore in mind, the fact that he became a master class deceiver and prankster really speaks volumes about how much things have changed since God stopped being in the picture. But you see a glimpse of that archangel he used to be there in the end. There is supplication in his eyes. There are glimpses of that benevolent being he used to be. But yeah I think as an extremely powerful being that he is, he probably has never had anybody call him out on his shit. The only other beings as powerful as him are his other archangel brothers and there was obviously issues there. It seems Dean's words hit him in some way.

Def a fan favorite episode. It's interesting to me how much I look back on the show and find that it's sometimes the one off episodes that are the most memorable whereas the arcs are less so for me. This one stands out of course due to the concept, the artistry, the expansion of the angel lore/history, the use of meta humor. I'm especially drawn to the reinvention of the Trickster as Gabriel. I can't speak to whether he was meant to be an archangel from the start but either way it worked for me 100%. Especially after the Zachariah episode trapping the brothers in an alternate life at the office building. Everything that happens here is totally within an archangel's wheelhouse. The production design was really top notch here. There's one thing that I love the most tho and it's the fact that the TV Sitcom motel is literally just the prettied up version of the motel they are in in the regular "Supernatural" world. The wallpaper is the same, just less grungy. I don't know why I focus on that detail but it really just tickles me.

So don't quote me, but I am pretty sure that the overarching plot line of the boys being Michael and Lucifer's vessel was always a part of the plan when they began the show. Eric Kripke planned for the series to be 5 years, so I believe the story was always slowly leading us here. There are certain hints that we have like in season 2 "Houses of the Holy" episode when they're in the church and the priest spends a good 30 seconds just talking about the arch angel Michael. That could've been a throw away scene, but in retrospect I think they were trying to foreshadow when we would finally meet Michael three seasons later. Also in the Season 3 "Mystery Spot" episode The Trickster/Gabriel was able to bring Dean back to life. Remember he was dead for 6 months towards the end. We've never seen a demigod bring someone back to life, so the very fact that he could resurrect someone, in retrospect leads you to believe that he is more than just a trickster, and turns out he is. I picked up on these things during my re-watch and again don't quote me😂 but I think these were all little hints pointing to where we are now. As much as I love everything in this episode, I think the ending is my favorite part. When Gabriel tells the boys that this has been their destiny and that they were "born to this," comparing Sam and Dean to Lucifer and Michael. It always gives me chills because everything that the boys have been through, with Sam having a rocky relationship with his dad and Dean being the "good son." Everything that we've been through as an audience, to realize that it was all leading to this... 🤯It's kind of eerie. Incredible, and amazing story telling, but also a little eerie to think that your whole existence has been apart of some plan that was drafted before you were born🤷🏾‍♀️... Destiny is beautiful in a creepy sort of way🤣🤣🤣 Anyway glad you guys enjoyed the episode, definitely a fan fav💜

Funny enough I’m in the middle of rewatching Band of Brothers right now, which Richard Speight Jr. is also in! He really is a great and versatile actor. I always love that full-circle moment at the end of this episode about the brother relationships.

L McB

This is definitely a fan favorite episode, and the reveal of the Trickster being the archangel Gabriel is one of my favorite moments of the series! I remember being blown away by that revelation, and I love the whole two brothers-destiny talk at the end of the episode. Love this season! Great reaction!

Toasted Toad

Nope, not in the original plan. Kripke did not decide to include angels until after season 3. He had previously been against it. It was just good writing, tying it in to what they had before with a smooth retcon.

Michele

I'm one of "those" fans who doesn't LOVE this episode. In fact, I didn't even like it very much for a while. I do like it now and find it funny, but it's still not on my Favorites list. I don't always like the silly episodes, and I Really don't like it when the angels mess with my boys like this!

Anisa Oliva

Also just to y’all know 5x10 is going to be a gut punch tug on your heart strings type of episode so yeah just a warning haha just watched it recently and yeah so no spoilers here though

Mary Coelho

watching y'all predict stuff knowing what happens is so entertaining

Diana

This is definitely a top ten episode, of the whole series, in my personal opinion. There is just something about Gabriel/Trickster that feels like the epitome of the entire show. The way this show blends almost every genre into something inimitable. I don't think I will ever see something just like it again.

Chaos T

Ladies and gents... this is what you call a god tier network tv episode.

Sharon Owen

This is in my top 5 of 327 episodes... I absolutely love it. I love Richard Speight Jr as the Trickster/Gabriel. He's one of my favourite guest stars in any TV show.

In Season 4 Anna said to Dean: "Do you even know how many angels have actually seen God? Four!" She obviously meant the four archangels Micheal, Lucifer, Rafael and Gabriel. They are archangels for a reason. Older than the rest, more powerful than the rest, closer to God than the rest. They are the actual "family" of father and four sons, pretty much, with whom started everything. Castiel calls God by his name - God - most of the time and talks about him as an entity like we humans would. But you can see Lucifer - for example - talk about God like his real dad. Like how any of us would talk about our actual dads who raised us. So it makes perfect sense for Archangel Gabriel to talk about "family" in that way, while all the other (ordinary) angels wouldn't have that kind of emotional/personal ties. Because they never lived together like a family, as such. Whereas the relationship between God and the four archangels is seemingly more akin to that of an actual family.
