The season 5 finale is one of the most highly rated and popular SPN episodes ever, so I can see your review might be devastatingly unpopular (and sorry - pretty long comment coming, although you might be surprised to know that I agree with you!). Personally, although I cried like a baby the first time I watched this, since then I have found a number of problems with it so I end up deeply dissatisfied with it.  1. I feel that available budget has to affect this episode. With a bigger show, they could show all sorts of world devastation and maybe bring loads and loads of people to a final fight. But this is a tiny show, so they only have a couple of guys at the final showdown. (That's not a complaint of mine, just a thought - it's a limitation we have to accept in a small programme). 2. Kripke has never confirmed his exact original ending, but I'm pretty sure that had it not been for the decision to continue, it would have ended with Dean being the only survivor. Bobby and Cas would have remained dead, and Sam would not have reappeared. So far as he had a plan, I think this was it. Sam dies, Dean lives, and Lucifer is vanquished. He wanted to get there one way or another.   3. Could they have made a 90 min finale? Well yes, obviously. Just delete one of those filler episodes. 4. My biggest problem is that from the beginning of Season 4, it's been all God brought Dean back for a reason, because he has work for him. Then in 4x17, we're told that "the righteous who begins it is the only man who can finish it." But it's Sam who finishes it by jumping into the cage. Dean is there and tries to help him, but it's most emphatically Sam who carries it over the line, and Chuck's narration is saying that the MVP is the Impala. If you want, at a pinch, it should be the brothers' relationship (and yes, I know that's depicted in the flashbacks, but that's not what the voiceover is pointing attention to). 5. I hate the last minute device of the toys in the Impala. It's too late for it to be believable, or for us to have any emotional investment in them. And Dean shoving back a toy that makes a noise in his beloved Impala without us hearing anything about it before now? Nope, I don't buy it, and so now it really annoys me. 6. At the end of Season 4, Sam drinking that woman alive is depicted as the most horrific act, the most unforgiveabe act. Yet here, he drinks 4 people, no problem. It's okay now as everybody (except the victims) consents. 7. I know Chuck's disappearance is something of a mystery, but my head canon was that God simply took him to heaven - special prophet dispensation(!) - he had done his job.

I still can’t watch this one without crying. Probably never can. And I’m okay with that. Great reaction. I’m gonna miss you guys, but I shall return! (Coronavirus money concerns dictate that I leave Patreon for a month or so...😔) I’ve loved this journey with y’all so much! ❤️❤️❤️

The guys have said that, for a lonnnng time, they were convinced that they'd be cancelled at basically any time, so they really did their best to throw as much into (what would have been) the series finale as possible. Because, tbh, the show *wasn't* that popular for a long time and the boys talked about how they were on the bubble for *years* and were never sure if they'd get picked up again for one more, so there was every likelihood that this was meant to be the series finale for good or for ill. I'm just really relieved that turned out to not be the case and we got many more years with them to follow their story and their development. I will say that, imo, there is *one* perfect episode of the show, but it's not until fairly late in season 6. I won't say anything else on that, since I know you're avoiding spoilers, but there are still tons of exceptional episodes on the way! Great reaction, fellas! I do agree that there were a lot of shortcuts that were taken in this finale (along with things being done not quite the same as other episodes), but I always just chalked it up to it being what Kripke intended as the series finale.

Kripke had enough warning about the show being renewed to change a few things. Initially, Dean and Sam both were going to spend eternity in the cage with Michael and Lucifer. Kripke wanted to blow everything up and kill everyone off...lol. He did spend some time working out S6 with Gamble, and acted as a consultant.

To me, the commentary about the Impala acknowledged how fans considered it a character of the show and brings the boy's story to a home base. Yeah, "Chuck" is totally doing fan service, but i'm ok with that part ;)

So sorry this is gonna be so long 😂.....Re-watching certain episodes like this one or "The song remains the same" really packs an emotional punch. Feeling the torture in that episode of knowing that Marys life is about to end and in a way so is Johns, and that breeds just a domino effect of events. "Monster at the end of the book" where we're introduced to Chuck for the first time and is also one of the first times Supernatural goes SO very much incredibly meta🤣🤣🤣. This episode, listening to Chuck's narrations and looking back to the beginning when the only real plan was "Saving people, hunting things, the family business."🥺it's super nostalgic, however I see how it could take you out of it a little when he begins talking directly to the audience because you can really tell that its kripke saying these things through this character. I had never thought about it before but I think you're 100% correct about the "endings are hard" line being used as a plot device to soften the blow if there were any mistakes. 🤔All that to say, I still like that line and find it extremely accurate and amusing.😂 This would have been a beautiful yet bittersweet ending, and I suppose maybe, possibly it could have ended here. HOWEVER, I mean one of my all time favorite seasons is season 8,( SO GOOD☺️) so I'm definitely not in the camp of saying that the show should've ended here. I personally feel like Sam would've deserved WAY more (knowing everything about his character at this point) than to sacrifice himself like this. I mean, I suppose that's why it's a sacrifice. It's great story telling though, that he, the baby brother ended up being the one to die, but when you think about Sam's life up until now, it's been SO, mind-blowingly shitty😭. I mean both of their lives have, but with Sam...he got out. He got to live the life he wanted, only for it to be taken from him when Jess died... When you think about it, I'm not sure if its beautiful or heartbreaking that in the end (because this was supposed to be the end) Sam gives his life, for humanity, but also so that Dean could live the life Sam always wanted for himself....If this would have been the end, I guess the only solace we get as the audience is hoping that Dean would live a happy life. But alas we have 10 more seasons😂 so buckle in y'all. So I don't know if y'all have had any comments on the next two seasons🤷🏾‍♀️ But they are still really good seasons. I just think it feels different because we got a new show runner, and they had to figure out where they wanted to take the show. For me personally I actually love rewatching season 7, but that's all I'll say on that. So anywho I realize that this comment is ridiculously long, so we're gonna go ahead and stop it here😂 hopefully you guys react to the season 5 bloopers as well as the QnA y'all are gonna do. Onward and upward to the next decade of Supernatural 😁❤️

This is still my favorite episode of the series. Like others have said there were likely some changes made to the script when the renewal came through. The only thing I would change is the appearance of Sam/Lucifer? at the end. I wish they would have waited until the following season for that reveal. Either way I think it wrapped up the first five seasons well.

I'm also a huge fan of season 8! That season was the last really great season imo. I also am in the minority who like season 7. Season 6 is up and down for me but there's some great episodes in it for sure. With all that said I love this show and the characters and actors too much to not watch it to its conclusion.

Mishalangelo's Apprentice

We may have hyped both you and ourselves a bit. The jokes that Greg was making about being ready and making sure everything is perfect was funnier until the power goes off in my whole neighborhood, at the middle of graveyard scene. I couldn't believe it myself even. But I finished it, finally. Your reactions to the sudden deaths were incredible, they are shocking scenes, could have been more emotional if time wasn't short. I agree with you, the episode would be better if it was longer and had more time for character study. I don't think they could have 90 min episode but it could have been a two-part episode. The show always has a lot to tell, I don't know if that's a bad thing or good. About Cas and Bobby sneaking in, Cas may be becoming more human with his powers decreasing but he is still an angel and has wings, he can just fly there with Bobby. Michael and Lucifer was already distracted. Cas makes me laugh a lot in this episode. Also, every episode Adam in it ends with everyone saying ’poor Adam’ he never catches a break. Kripke said he thought show needed fresh perspective and energy on characters and its universe to be more healthy after 5 years of his writing. He passed showrunnig to Gamble but remained as a writer/executive producer for season 6, then he became executive consultant. Lastly, with Kripke’s own words; ”When you start a show, the plans are not set in stone... I had a plan about demons. That was my plan when I began... We had a structure of a demon ladder that was ultimately about letting Lucifer loose and having him take over Sam. The dark secret was always that Sam was going to be the vessel. Originally, it was just that Dean would then have to hunt down and kill his brother. But then, rightfully so, we brought in angels to bolster up the other side of the coin. And then, Michael came into the story. It evolved from just, "I have to hunt down and kill my brother," to these two mirrored stories about two sets of brothers, the brothers in Heaven and the brothers on Earth, and how they compare and contrast. A lot of it was dumb luck, and a lot of it was noticing the opportunities that we had in front of us, at the time, and taking advantage. For the most part, it worked out... We always had to fight to stay on and in season two, that was very true. We moved over, it was the new CW and we were a bubble show. A big note that the network had at the time was "we should really give the boys a home and some recurring characters, and bringing in some women would be good.'' Sorry about lenght of the comment, but I thought you'd like to know what Kripke said.

I swear, I've watched this episode dozens of times now, and yet the montage makes me cry literally every time. And this may be where Kripke stops being involved quite as much, but I promise there's still plenty of amazing Supernatural to come :)

great reaction, I rate this episode a 9.5/10

I'm relatively new to the show, and to the patreon so I hope I don't come across wrong but I wanted to see about #4. The Righteous Man who starts it is the one to stop it but isn't it possible that Dean actually failed though? He did not save his brother from killing Lilith and releasing Lucifer. So in the end, he did follow his father's order: if you can't save him you have to kill him. He failed and all it cost him to "end it" was his brother's life.

Michele

A LOT of episodes with this show require Processing. And re-watching. I think you're getting some fans (your subscribers) are so into talking about this show/episodes ad-naseum and watching Reactions. And re-watching seasons over and over again. lol I loved watching you guys watch this! Seeing you basically freeze midway through a What the F reaction as the stuff came one after another. I wasn't on Lucifer's side, but I wasn't on Michael's either. They were both wrong. Lucifer was being a spoiled child. He might have a reason to be pissed off with his dad, but that didn't mean I'd support how he chose to deal with it. Jensen has said that his brother had a really hard time watching the scene where Lucifer!Sam was beating up Dean. His brother said to him that all he saw was Jared beating up his brother. Castiel came back with more juice. More power. He wasn't able to heal or bring people back to life like that before. He was brought back, new and Improved. Many people do a double take when the stuff about the car first comes in, as it breaks up what's happening. It threw me off at first too, but by the end I understood why it was happening. The car represents their life together. They basically live in that car. It's been part of their entire life. And it did come into play at the end - and that's why it showed up early in the episode. Chuck was inserting it into the story at that point, because he knew its importance. Without the car, and the memories it stimulated, Sam wouldn't have been able to push Lucifer to the back. I see Chuck as a representation of Kripke. Definitely. This show likes to be Meta. It was definitely Kripke's words that were coming out of Chuck for parts of it. I've heard Kripke in interviews and he's said stuff like that. Kripke was using his soap box and talking to us, basically. Kripke ended his story, and so did Chuck. They both go away. He's a prophet too, and who knows how that worked. If this had been the ending of the show, I wouldn't have been happy that it meant Sam being in Hell. I'm not advanced enough to not want more of a Happy Ending. From my understanding, Kripke's mind set for the show was for it to go for a few season's, and he was continually surprised that it kept getting renewed. He did think that season 4 would be it's final season, but the ratings really shot up during the season and so it didn't end. He put a LOT into season 4. They all did. So when they got renewed he was like - what do we do now? How do we keep this level going? The CW wasn't always "supportive". The one dude was, but the people who made important decisions about airing of the shows, budget, etc. were not always supportive. Jared did an amazing job. I personally think he really enjoys playing those intense scenes where he's playing other than the normal Sam. He'd be a great choice to play a villain in a movie or show. I'm one of the fans who is fully on board with Lisa being there for Dean. I always thought that Dean likely called her before he showed up, so she was expecting him.
