In this episode, I think Violet came to the realization that there are some things that only she can do because of the life she once lived. Of all the dolls, she was the only one capable of safely completing such a dangerous request, and as a former soldier who also lost some precious to her in war, I think she couldn't bear to see that man's letter go unwritten because no one would take the risk. You might say she was uniquely qualified for this mission. If she hadn't been a soldier and fought all those years, that letter would never have reached his family or Maria. I think in essence, this episode is about Violet accepting the past for what it is and leaning on her experiences to make a positive difference today. I also think it's a reminder to the audience that even though there are things we've done in the past that may make us sad, angry or ashamed, we are also shaped by our experiences and we wouldn't be ourselves if we rejected them.
