Been waiting for this one all season. So many things that were set up all along. Lash is basically the Anti-Hive.. Dr. Garner once said that he felt like he was doing things for a reason. Imagine if he hadn't killed those Inhumans. Malick would have delivered them to Hive and Hive would be that much stronger with a large group of followers. Lash once said, "I am the Cure". As we see, he was. The cure to Hive's sway. And, of course, he dies with a hole in his chest just like he kills.

Lash was made to destroy hive. He is the cure to his sway but lash wasn’t a complete killing machine anymore after his transition was finished. Lash says to Lincoln in 3x7 I am the cure foreshadowing his true purpose. He would have killed Hive if he was still that monster. His human side went to save daisy first and get her to safety. I understand what you mean by lashes end feeling abrupt but you have to think about it like this. Andrew would forever be lash and Imprisoned he at least got to die saving someone he cares about. Hellfire (James) is a character in the comics. He uses a chain like ghost rider.
