Whilst acknowledging my Martha Supremacist bias, the reason the show brings up her crush so much is that she basically has no other real "flaws" so they drive her crush into the ground. She's smart, figured out what the Doctor needed from her with nothing but the psychic paper for instruction, basically picked up her own companions in this episode and *she* is the one telling people not to wander off. A bunch of pig slaves were coming to kill her and the Doctor was just like "idk figure it out" and SHE DID. I love Rose and she obviously grew more capable over time, but by her 9th episode she was dangling off an airship in the middle of the London Blitz- this is Martha's 5th.

I do sympathise as I love Martha, but my main gripe (I absolutely adore this season bar this) is the relationship pining in the first half of the season, I feel without it they could focus more on other things and further build the friendship more than it already is and people would be more forgiving towards it. And agreed, Rose had two seasons for the audience to warm to her and for the relationships to be built, we are only five episodes in so I feel it’s unfair to write her off as a companion (not what Greg and John are doing) but I’ve seen other reactors do that by this point and it always annoys me.

Rose’s relationship was special. The companions traditionally don’t have a romantic relationship with the Doctor. I find it creepy trying to force Martha into being anything beyond just the next companion.

That makes sense. I feel like the show writers couldn't really find any good enough reason to justify her going with the Doctor (since she's doing pretty well in her own life) so they pinned it on this crush. I wish they hadn't.

Huh, I have to agree with you lol. I do like Martha in general, but I never liked this season all too much. She just spent so much time pining after the Doctor and it kinda got annoying. To be honest though, that's also why I didn't like Rose much either. I think I like Dr Who for the adventure and the stories, but I never really liked much of the romance parts lol

I'm in the minority in that I actually really like the dynamic of Martha having an unrequited love for the Doctor while he's still hung up on Rose. I feel like it narratively does really well for developing the Doctor and emphasizing how significant Rose was and still is to him, in a way I don't think they could have captured as much with a companion who wasn't into him. Plus I guess I'm kind of just a sucker for unrequited or unfulfilled love stories, probably for somewhat personal reasons.
