Yeah the two of you are genuinely spot on with the consensus for this episode. For some odd reason my dad really, really likes it. He accepts and understands it’s criticisms however he’s super into this episode. Which I think has inadvertently made me more sympathetic/gentle on the episode and its shortcomings, however I can’t quite look past Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King in Doctor Who. David and Freema are great in this episode though. They’ve got this super bouncy chemistry, and since they spend the majority of the episode together, it’s a great feel of them as a unit. And I love that Martha and the Doctor discover information with each other, because of her medical training, she’s not just a vessel for the audience to hear the Doctor say some made sci-fi jargon. Don’t get me wrong I’ll listen to hours of David Tennant, spouting techno babel (I literally have) but having Martha do it alongside him is very refreshing. This episode is overall, fine. Great concepts, great performances but wasted potential. I’ll give it a nice 6.5/10.

To be fair I agree with your dad 😂 I’ve always liked this episode, the cgi hasn’t really bothered me (other than the face as the years have went on) and I still think it manages to have those philosophical conversations just to a limited degree compared to what it could have been had it not decided to go down this route. I’m happy to agree with your conclusion and rating 👍

The big thing for me from this epiosde is that Martha is now a full time member of the Tardis. This does change the dynamic of their traveling and it's reflected in the second half of this series which is one of my all time favorites.

Great reaction, but What do you watch it on, ive tried my own copy and hbo Max and still have to pause your video about every 45 seconds to keep it synced up

I've actually always given the creature more of a pass because of the Doctor's explanation of what it is. I just found the idea of alternate evolutionary paths being hidden in our genetics, and then being unlocked, to be really fascinating, and the idea that they all mixed together to create such a wild and insane amalgamation of features seemed fitting and interesting. But I do concede that they didn't lean enough into what made that so interesting, and instead turned it into a bit of a mindless monster fight, which is a shame. I think maybe the best way they could have executed this concept would have been if the mutations were a bit more subtle, and started small, then slowly escalated and got more out of control. And then, if the mutations also slowly altered Lazarus's mind, and if the episode actually had a sort of split focus, cutting between the two perspectives: the doctor and Martha investigating on the one hand, and Lazarus's descent into madness on the other. And then the two would come together at the end, and perhaps Lazarus would have a moment of clarity where he would recognize what he'd become, shortly before dying. I'm basically just rewriting the episode at this point lol.
