Okay, so I haven't watched your reaction yet, just part of the comments, so this may be a bit unfair but... what exactly is it you want the Doctor to do with Martha? She's in love with him... that's kind of her problem. He doesn't owe her anything because of that. He doesn't love her. She is free to leave at any time. Sure, she took on a monumental task this time to save the Doctor, but he lived as a maimed version of himself for months, even if he didn't know it. And he wasn't doing it for kicks - he was trying to save others. So I think you're giving him an extremely hard time - maybe projecting on Martha somehow? Inviting someone else to travel with him doesn't mean Martha gets kicked out. The Doctor can have more than one companion at a time.

I love that you uploaded this today as its Remembrance/VE day in britain and that's what they were remembering at the end, hence them wearing the poppies. Im sure it was accidental, but pretty awesome. Also, mega excited for next week and John knows why!

I think their critique of the Doctor and how he treats Martha, is more than fair and is definitely the intended way we’re supposed to view their relationship. I have no doubt that we as the audience are meant to be very critical of the Doctor this season...that’s why they consistently portray him in a less than flattering light. So I don’t think Greg and John are being unfair in the slightest. At the very most I worry they feel like they’re not meant to feel as uncomfortable as they do with the Doctor and Martha’s relationship, and without spoiling them in any way I do want to assure them that the way the feel is 100% the intent of the relationship. We are meant to feel that frustration and uphill battle Martha is facing all throughout this season so far and most certainly in the episodes to come. I’ve always been critical of the Doctor this season because he treats Martha unfairly, and he’s completely unaware of her needs and wants to the point where he just seems like he’s entirely oblivious or just doesn’t care. So I really think they’ve been spot on with the assessment of their relationship, and I don’t see that as a criticism of the show but rather a praise of being able to get the audience to empathise with Martha so much to the point where we question the Doctor’s behaviour. Great feat in my opinion and I’m glad Greg and John have picked up on it because so few reactors do.

When I first watched this show, I was around 13-15, and for some reason I hated Martha. Like, I just disliked her so much because I was so attached to Rose. Now, 10 years later, I see she was just not really well written? They kinda did her dirty. I mean, she barely passes the Bechdel test. However, she's so smart and witty. She's great... when she's not pining over the Doctor.

Maybe I'm not being as hard as they are because I don't in fact like Martha. I think Freema is extraordinarily beautiful but stiff as a board. And I don't really sympathise with her - if she can't accept that the Doctor does not reciprocate her feelings, she should leave. It should have long become obvious to her that the Doctor is oblivious. He is not human - he often does not pick up on human cues. And I think now that he has finally twigged that she likes him more than is good for her, he doesn't want to just dump her and force her out. I think Martha does not work well as a counterpoint to the Doctor - he needs someone to soften his more dangerous tendencies, and I don't think she really gets through to him. After Rose, they made the mistake of thinking they needed some kind of "love interest" in the companion and chose this unrequited mooning over the Doctor. That's a disservice to who Martha could have been. I think the problem is that she's poorly written. Had it not been for that one aspect of her character, she would have been so much more likeable, and I think her relationship with the Doctor would have been much better.

Martha is probably one of the most useful companions IMO, that’s prob why she’s my 2nd fav companion. I think I felt pretty much just like you Greg, the first time I saw this season. I do think The Doctor knows exactly how Martha feels, but I think he’s just trying to ignore it because he does not want to get involved with anyone the way he did with Rose (it still hurts him,) and he doesn’t want to let her in. He also doesn’t want to say anything to her cuz he’s sort of using her to fill a void at this point, so he doesn’t yet want to risk losing her.

It’s less to with the Doctor not reciprocating her affection, and more to do with him being a blind inconsiderate fool. I’ve had relationships were I’ve fancied the other person, and they’ve not fancied me. Those relationships weren’t nearly as awful as Martha and the Doctors. She’s constantly putting in a 110% and the most she gets is a “thanks” and a hug. The Doctor simply needs to treat her with more respect and autonomy. She’s constantly proving herself to him and he constantly puts her down.

And I hate to be “that guy” but I feel like you severely misunderstand Martha’s purpose as a character. A key feature of her character is to critique the idea that every companion should be a love interest, which is rather blatantly presented, to the point where they’re bashing you over the head with “LOOK HOW MUCH THEY DONT WORK TOGETHER, DO YOU WANT MORE OF THIS? NO, WELL TOUGH!” I love Martha’s character, and I love the long lasting impact that her companionship has on the Doctor. Her importance cannot be negated in my opinion.

I don't see him putting her down. He gives her thanks and a hug. What more should he be doing? He feels awkward as she just declared unreciprocated feelings to him, and is now trying to take it back. She made the first withdrawal, not him. I don't think that it's a "key feature" of her character to critique the idea that every companion should be a love interest. It was a poorly written aspect of her character. They wanted to continue the "Romance" Doctor, but could not have a second Rose, so instead they landed themselves in this mess. Martha deserved better, but I think criticism is landing in the wrong place. Although this season does have a few very strong episodes, by and large it's my least favourite season, mostly because of Martha. But not for the same reasons as the Rejects. They like her. I don't.

I suppose we’ll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to Martha 😂. I personally really love Martha and she’s one of my favourite companions. However I have a rather notorious affinity for companions, and I’ve been heavily criticised for my love of a companion who appears in the latter half of series 7. So what I’m saying is, don’t take my word for it.
