When I watched it, what I understood was that the grandfather ordered his son to kill Zuko, so the mother killed him instead and is now a fugitive.

When you have a war film or show, the audience is supposed to love the allied countries and hate the warmongering country. This episode reminds you that there is good and bad on both sides. For the “heroes”, the Earth Kingdom Reserve Army is just living it up while the infantry is fighting for their nation on the front lines. For the “villains”, Princess Ursa never verbally supports the war and dislikes violence.

All hail “thicc satan” lmao I knew you’d pick up on and love the western theme. And I always saw Azula and Zuko as reflections of their parents, Azula is like their father and Zuko is like their mother.

This is easily my favorite episode of ATLA and it gives us the most lore from the fire nation of any episode in the whole Avatar Universe and it expands the character development of Zuko. And the unique style of making this like an old Clint Eastwood western is so creative for this show.

Hands down, another top 10 episode right here! The mystery around Ursa was one of my favorite elements of the show. I think this episode, along with some others, do a great job of showing the complexities of how we generalize different countries. While at the same time sort of forget there are people behind the good/bad decisions that frame how we refer to things. Not every individual in a "bad" country thinks bad things. The way the episode also brings up the thoughts of, was Azula a lost cause from the jump; could Ursa have done something to change her if she didn't have to leave? Who really knows?
