Nothing compares to Sam 'staring off into the distance' flashbacks especially with no relevance at all to the actual story. But honestly while I would love nothing more than Sam finding happiness, this vet lady who guilt tripped him into taking care of a dog after he accidentally hit it rubbed me wrong and it just got worse. While I am a massive Benny fan and love their friendship - it seems like both were just blocks to make the year apart even more dramatic then it needed. Purgatory was plenty of story to me but Kermit/motel/hazy traumatic, love story just got in the way.

Also...Vampirates! As a huge fan of hybrid names even before I watched this show, this one is one of my faves from Dean!

The first half of this season is pretty focused on Dean, but the second half really has a spotlight on Sam, so it will even itself out by the end of the season

I love this episode (and honestly, any Purgatory and/or Benny episode), but I agree the writers should have given more focus to Benny and Adnrea's resolution over the Amelia parts. But then, I seriously dislike Amelia and Sam's flashbacks of her, so I'm a little biased lol I just wanna point out that (imo) the Purgatory scenes were neccessary both to show how Dean and Benny's camaraderie developed to, basically, brothers-in-arms and also to fill us in to why Dean is behaving the way he is (PTSD and all), plus to hint at Cas's... fate? I mean, Cas is shown to be rather reluctant to even try and get out, but at this point he realizes that if he wants Dean to go back, he has to go along.

I think Dean's hard looks at the end were just because he's scared that his friend is suddenly giving up after all they've been through together. I liked all the Dean/Benny story until they came to the vampirate mansion. After that, it got pretty dull. It was just cheesy villains twirling their moustaches. Personally, I'm not fond of flashbacks. I wish they'd done one episode dealing with Dean's year, and one dealing with Sam's instead of spreading them through the early part of the season, especially as it can sometimes mean wedging something in that interrupts the flow of an episode (because they've got to have as much Sam time as Dean time). I like Sam's story, but I don't think it goes well with an 'action' story - it slows things down. That last scene though (where Sam meets Benny) is golden. So I can understand you guys finding it hard to know what to think of this episode. There's some good stuff, but it's a bit all over the place.

I really enjoy this episode. Probably because I really enjoyed Benny, Dean, Cas and the old man's performances. There is just something so right about the details to the Purgatory scenes, to me. I have to agree Sam's flashbacks do seem less important, and I feel they have much less depth to them. I feel like they missed the mark on depicting the rose-tinted whirlwind romance. Too much set up for me to get a sense of the whirlwind feeling. I love the way the last scene with Benny meeting Sam shows how much information can be processed in a moment.

Mishalangelo's Apprentice

I like the idea of using flashbacks to tell what happened in purgatory and stretching it to multiple episodes, although it wasn't successful as much as it was in the first episodes. What I think would create better contrast between brothers is if they started their conflict more even footed, like If we have been shown Sam and Amelia’s relationship in the first episode and leave the mystery to Dean’s plotline, we could have been more sympathetic towards Sam and then learning Dean’s last year (and “justify” his anger) slowly could make the friction between brothers more compelling. Although I find this season interesting, I think it could be so much better with a few creative differences.

I'm not sure :-/ it may be a glitch within Patreon? Periodically I'll see people comment that they had to re-post their initial comment, so could be related to that? I know neither of us has been deleting them.

Are y'all not able to show the full episode since this is on Patreon?

thereelrejects

Not able to show the full episode anywhere, I'm afraid. Even on Patreon people get in trouble for that, so we gotta rely on either these highlights or the sync-up style stream-along. Hope that's not too much of a drag!!

StackzDaCrook

Oh ok, I was wondering and no I immensely enjoy watching it with y'all either way, even though it would be even better if you could. Also, do y'all not do the twice a week thing anymore with Supernatural?

This is why I appreciate your discussion on each episode, I never noticed how quickly Benny went from wanting to be with his long lost love to being ok with Dean decapitating her but yeah that was a quick transition! Also I am loving how much you find the Sam flashbacks ridiculous, because of course they are!
