Love this episode. Don't know why you think fans might hate it, and I was surprised you didn't find it more charming. While I agree it does start off as though it's going to be mocking LARPing, that's not the way it ends. And that makes sense when you look at it from the POV of Sam and Dean. They would not immediately see this as fun, although you can see Dean begin to think it cool from the moment he sees the video, although he hides it from Sam. Notice that it takes him a long time to remove the crown Charlie puts on his head! (So many gifs of that section) Any episode with Charlie in it automatically gets +2 in its rating from me, and Charlie/Dean is one of my favourite relationships on SPN.

I love this episode, I am a D&D player so I thought it was really entertaining! You'll find most SPN fans really love Charlie and that most of her episodes are Fan Favourites, at least what I have seen!

I Love this episode, good fun! For me, with all the emotional drama and trauma of what the brothers go through within the series, it's more often than not a welcome breather when the characters and the audience along with them, get to have a bit of fun. And Charlie is great!

I love it so much. Like mmm! Just the perfect amount of cheese! And Charlie is one of my absolute favorites. For me, it is one of those where the plot is solely there as an excuse to put the Winchesters in a fun situation and create great moments and in honesty okay with that.

I took the whole nerd thing very differently. I felt like Dean wanted to make fun of that stuff but that he actually really love it. He seemed really excited to dress up and get involved.

“Kids these days with their texting and murder.”

This is one of my favorite episodes and definitely a go to watch. I know what you mean though about how the show sometimes makes fun of its fans. It’s hard to tell sometimes if the writers and producers love or hate us. I also love that Dean opens up and let’s his nerd flag fly in this episode! It really shows how comfortable he is with Charlie. Their friendship is one of my favorites! Fun fact, this episode aired on Dean’s birthday! So it’s nice to think that Dean got to have some fun on his birthday.

One of my top favorite episodes. Any with Charlie is a favorite. She and Dean have a solid little sis/big bro type bond that makes her family.

Exactly. When you look at "nerds" from Sam and Dean's POV it's initially uncool (although they both have proven to be nerdy in their own ways over the seasons). They're both not going to go off and join Moondoor in a LARPing adventure, or fanboy over Twilight, or write fanfiction over Harry Potter, etc. So, from their view something like LARPing is extreme nerd behavior. What I love about this episode, and the previous episode with Charlie, is it really shows how fun being a nerd can be and by the end there's the realization that it's okay to be a fanboy/fangirl. It can be a lot of fun and not in a toxic manner (opposite of fangirl Becky of course who goes to the extreme in a bad way). I love that Sam and Dean embrace it all in the end and join Charlie and her warriors to defend her crown. The little dedication at the end is also a light-hearted shout out to all of us nerds out there without mocking us. Plus, Felicia Day is known as queen of the nerds. She wouldn't agree to do an episode like this if she thought it was mocking everything she loves about fandom. While this episode isn't perfect, it's so fun that it's easy to look past the imperfections. One of my faves from season 8!

Dean and Sam both have dropped some references over the seasons that points to their inner nerd, especially Dean. At this point we all know Dean fanboys over Star Trek, Star Wars, classic rock, and western movies. I think the only really offensive nerd related issue I've had with the show is the character of Becky that virtually made fun of Supernatural fans themselves. I do think Charlie (and Garth to a lesser degree) were a 'fix' for the mistake they made with the Becky character, but in no way do I think the show constantly makes fun of nerds. Dean and Sam are both nerdy in their own ways. Sam doesn't really need to talk about it and Dean hides it because he always wants to seem cool. Different writers probably have different takes on it as well.

One of my favorite lines from any episode ever!

Another really just fun and enjoyable episode. I agree with you guys. I guess it depends on who is in more in charge of an episode, whether they are making fun of nerdy stuff, or whether they are saying we're nerds too. I think this one leans more into the we're nerds too category. I adore the way the show let's Dean have and play into the dimensions of his interests. Also love how free he seems wandering with Charlie, oppose to the facade of disinterest wandering with Sam.

Honestly while I understand why Greg kind of felt hostility towards certain nerd culture in this episode and a few other before, I do feel it's more love. They use Dean as a vector into dropping the stigma and seeing the appeal of LARPING and other things. As many have said before, Dean is in reality a huge fucking nerd lol but his macho persona has often made him look down on being open about it. And the way I took it in this episode is not that Dean was falling in love with the fantasy world, but more like he was slowly dropping his guard. The excitement in his face that he constantly tries to hide is the little gem of this episode, and of course at the end when Sam agrees to stay for a bit he can barely even contain himself haha I think people in general like this episode. The conclusion is slightly anti-climactic but it's a fun one off episode which of course Felicia Day elevates.
