I'm bit late on this one, sorry about that ;) The interesting fact about this episode is it's not actually based on any particular short story. Instead, it connects the threads and puts them where they need to be for the finale. In the books we hear about the Slaughter of Cintra from Jaskier who repeats the story told to him by someone else. It's never shown because the narration in the short stories is always from Geralt's perspective and Geralt wasn't there. He returned to Cintra earlier, when Ciri was 6, but after speaking with Calanthe, left Cintra without her. Then he travelled in the North and came back when Cintra has already fallen.
