This was the first appearance of the Red Room in the MCU. Even though Age of Ultron was scripted and shot prior to this, Agent Carter came out first. Bridget Regan (Dottie) worked with a trainer to teach her Scarlett Johansson’s fighting style. Another Easter egg is in Black Widow during the opening montage, it showed the trainees watching old cartoons, presumably being brainwashed like in this episode.

Behold, the origins of the Red Room! Like Robert English said, the opening credits montage in Black Widow parallels what we see in this episode, but it's also a weird little coincidence that you'd watch this episode this week, given Yelena's major presence on Hawkeye this week. The scene in the Automat even matches up with the Yelena and Kate macaroni scene pretty well! I love Bridget Regan in this role, since she plays this type of deranged but hides it well fem fatale character quite well (for perspective, she was recently cast as Poison Ivy on Batwoman, and played a very similar character on Jane the Virgin around the same time as this). It's also interesting to see a straight up villainous Widow (or proto-Widow, I guess) in the mix. The Red Room graduates we have currently are all far more sympathetic, which makes Dottie stand out all the more.

Leviathan is a Soviet-based organization that is a foil to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra in the comic series Secret Warriors. Hydra has double agents to take down SHIELD from within and Leviathan did the same to Hydra. Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine has actually played triple agent for all three sides. Nick Fury and his Secret Warriors, which include Daisy and Yo-Yo, have to fight off both organizations.
