Literally similar to the movie, Mama.

I am very curious about your opinion of next episode lol. This episode was a basic motw but they managed to make it hit emotionally in a surprising way. I like sunny's statement about being loyal to family and how this all ties into the issue dean faces currently with Sam and the Ezekiel situation and his loyalty to Sam (keeping him alive) is hurting people he cares about unintentionally.

Yay! Glad y’all liked this one because it’s one of my favorites. I didn’t want to hype it beforehand, but honestly this is one of the episodes like I’ll just go rewatch on its own at random just for the warm and fuzzies. Supernatural is one of top favorite shows and Dean is my favorite character so I really just live for any Dean-centric episode, but give me flashback Dean? Hell yes! Also until this point basically all the flashbacks to the Winchesters childhood were all season 5 and earlier and were all very Sam-centric. Always either about the demon blood or him feeling like a misfit and just wanting to be normal. I like one about Dean and that it’s so well done! It doesn’t really give new information about his character, but more just more eveidently shows what we already know. And let’s us know Dean was like this since so very young. Too young. That he was always smart, funny, and good at what he does, but his humor is pretty much a defense mechanism. And that he would do anything for his family even if it’s detrimental to himself

Dean + Kids = great episodes. Watching how great he is with kids is always a delight. I agree the kid playing Dean did such a fantastic job capturing the layers Jensen brings, and Sonny was such a great mentor. The only thing that stands out as a tiny bit odd to me is the bruises scene. Dean doesn't go on his first hunt until 17, but he is 16 here. So, are the bruises from a night John was drunk and Dean did something that got him angry? It always kinda hurts when the show tries to highlight an abusive action John has performed; only for Dean to try and completely claim it wasn't abusive. That ending always hits for me too.

This episode cemented my hate for John Winchester. I couldn’t believe he left Dean here for 2 months and then took him away the moment he was happy somewhere. On top of that, Dean didn’t see a werewolf for the first time until season 2. So he lied about the bruises, implying they did come from John. There are so many times the show alludes to John being abusive and it breaks my heart to see Dean brush it all off like it’s no big deal
