Bonus facts 🔵 Colony Sarff visits the Maldovarium, a bar last seen in 2011's "A Good Man Goes to War". 🔵 UNIT seeks the Doctor using a computer algorithm, plotting on a map the locations of various crises at which he has been rumoured to have appeared. These correspond with locales for many of the Doctor's past adventures: San Martino (The Masque of Mandragora); New York City (The Chase, "Daleks in Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks", and "The Angels Take Manhattan") and three possible appearances in Atlantis (The Time Monster, The Underwater Menace, and The Dæmons).

🔵Peter Capaldis band was called the dreamboats and included Late night show host Craig Ferguson (the two of them remain good friends to this day)

🔵 Finally, the Doctor decides to hold his farewell party in 1138 AD. This is likely a reference to George Lucas’s first film, THX 1138. The number has taken on a life of its own, having first been included in many a Lucasfilm and Lucasarts project before going on to show up in everything from Monsters Inc to The West Wing.

The entire concept for the episode is exploring a conversation from the fourth doctor and Sarah Jane in “the genesis of the Daleks” [the Doctor is holding the ends of two wires connected to the explosives he has set up in the Dalek incubator room] Sarah Jane Smith : Well, what are you waiting for? Doctor Who : Just touch these two strands together and the Daleks are finished. Have I that right? Sarah Jane Smith : To destroy the Daleks? You can't doubt it. Doctor Who : Well, I do. You see, some things could be better with the Daleks. Many future worlds will become allies just because of their fear of the Daleks. Sarah Jane Smith : But it isn't like that. Doctor Who : But the final responsibility is mine, and mine alone. Listen, if someone who knew the future pointed out a child to you and told you that that child would grow up totally evil, to be a ruthless dictator who would destroy millions of lives, could you then kill that child? Sarah Jane Smith : We're talking about the Daleks, the most evil creatures ever invented, you must destroy them! You must complete your mission for the Time Lords! Doctor Who : Do I have the right? Simply touch one wire against the other and that's it. The Daleks cease to exist. Hundreds of millions of people, thousands of generations can live without fear, in peace, and never even know the word Dalek. Sarah Jane Smith : Then why wait? If it was a disease or some sort of bacteria you were destroying, you wouldn't hesitate. Doctor Who : But if I kill, wipe out a whole intelligent lifeform, then I become like them. I'd be no better than the Daleks.

After some digging The other quotes I know the episode and Doctor for is the seventh doctor in rememberance of the Daleks saying “unlimited rice pudding” and the tenth doctor in the stolen Earth “after everything we saw, we did, we lost, I only have one thing to say to you, byeeee” And the sixth doctor in Revelation of the Daleks saying “but did you bother to tell anyone they might be eating one of their own relatives” to which Davros replies “certainly not! That would have created what I believe is called “consumer resistance””

Thanks for the bonus facts, Rosie. Appreciate the quote! The Genesis of the Daleks sure is one of the great shows of Classic Who. It was one of the series I listened to the most as a kid --and this time my mom had a proper LP record of it.

I'm excited for series nine. And it was so fun to have the Doctor playing music again - a nice nod to Two and his recorder. We may have convinced Capaldi to play for us when he visited for a Doctor Who convention here. He was a lovely, good sport and indulged us. :)
