The concept and look was good. By this point I'd almost given up on excepting something largely palatable from the rest of an episodes typical attributes. Like Greg said the other week. I was consciously dissecting each episode for parts I could individually appreciate, rather the collective whole.

Wow I really wasn’t expecting you to rate it that low Greg, this episode is often put in as a top 3 if not 5 for Jodie’s era, gonna stop trying to predict what you’re going to like and dislike because it’s hard to read these days. To me this is an 8.5/9 and the second best episode of this season 😂

To me it’s a great mixture of a classic historical episode mixed with haunted house vibes and one of the best cybermen stories. The concept is sound and imo executed really well and also pays tribute to the very first sci fi novel, end of the day without Frankenstein we wouldn’t have Doctor who and possibly no sci fi or at least the way we know it now. It also puts thirteen in a situation where she can’t just use the sonic screwdriver to get out and because she doesn’t have any good options ends up lashing out which is in line for her and her story this season. I think Ashad is a really great design and genuinely creepy, also well acted. Other fun fact is that polidori (the sleepwalker) wrote “The Vampyre” (he based it on Byron) which changed vampires into what we know today, kickstarted the genre and 80 years later inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula, it’s insane how much these four people and their descendants have shaped the modern world.

I liked the horror vibes and Ashad. However I just dont like that the companions have nothing much to do in these episodes. Not as balanced like with bill and nardole for example.

im similar in the sense that when stories are more connected to emotion and character growth is what i like the most, which is why i dislike a lot of jodie’s era cus there’s not much of it, and i think esp in seasons 11 & 12 it’s because there’s just too many companions. the only reason why it worked with river amy and rory is cus we we’re slowly introduced to them one at a time instead of all of them at once. i think if it was just yaz & ryan and graham came on in a similar one by one way it could’ve worked so much better. i will say i like this episode a lot but mainly because i LOVE when the doctor gets dark and sees the reality of her immortality and how she is at the top and has to be the one who makes the tough decisions. her speech reminded me a lot of waters of mars, the time of the angels/flesh and stone, fires of pompeii, and the zygon inversion, etc. when the doctor gets dark, those are my fav bits cus we’re seeing into their emotions as the main character. this episodes story itself is alright but i like it because of the doctors acting alone.

the doctor lashing out and having that speech is really what made the episode for me. because so much of the time she’s so bubbly and fun but when they go much darker is some of my favorite parts of this show cus it makes the doctor feel so much more relatable, imo. like the doctor is supposed to be this larger than life character so when they get angry or sad or vengeful, you see the humanity they have. i think the amount of companions in s11 and 12 really just bring a lot of the potential in these stories down because they’re kinda just there to do nothing a lot of the time

I love the Cybermen so that reveal was excellent for me! I think Ashad is one of my favorite villains tbh

The one actor you thought was from hereditary is the guy who plays isildur in Rings of Power

2023-08-25 22:08:55 very late on these thoughts but greg kinda shattered my heart a bit. i was really looking forward to seeing this episode with you guys. this is the only chibnall era episode i genuinely love. haunted house stories, the concept of the lone cyberman, odd houses that make no sense, and of course it's set at the HAUNTING OF VILLA DIODATI. byron is my favourite poems and i quite love the whole crew, which might i admit shape my viewing of the episode more 'cause it feels very emotionally complex to me because i already know these people, none of them feel like one of characters 'cause they're not. also, it includes my favourite portrayal of the doctor by jodie. if i'm honest with myself, it's not a 10/10, it's like a high-high 9/10 but this time i wanna say it's a 10/10. just for being a chibnall era episode and this stellar it deserves it.
