So good to see Dr Who back on Christmas Day. I really liked the episode. Yes, the TV host who nearly died is a real person, Davina McCall is a very famous British TV presenter.

In fact, this is Davina McCall’s SECOND appearance as herself on Doctor Who! If you remember the silly (*very* RTD, very *not* Moffat or Chibnall) idea in “Bad Wolf” back from Season 1 — that all the surging reality shows of 2005 would still be huge 200,000 years from now with few if any format changes, just bigger and constant and involving everyone on the planet — Nine got transmatted into a Big Brother House. Davina McCall was the original presenter of UK Big Brother, and was at the time “Bad Wolf” premiered. So, like the presenters of other shows depicted (like the AnneDroid for The Weakest Link), she played an android version of herself. You barely saw her but you heard her in the Big Brother announcements that Eccleston was reacting to. They don’t explicitly brand it like they did in “Bad Wolf” (maybe Disney legal put up a red flag, or cross-promotion’s just considered more tacky now?), but McCall now is the presenter of “Long Lost Family”, which does exactly what they showed her doing with Ruby.

Actually apparently there’s some theory about Bad Wolf — that Rose liked to watch those shows, so the Bad Wolf made them part of the fabric of Earth history at that time she happened to visit? That’s actually (Doctor Who) plausible—the idea that 20-aught’s reality TV would still be huge — with visual style and presenters regurgitated from ancient history — took even more suspension of disbelief than RTD usually asks. I’d say more than “they’re goblins, roll with it” 😅

Apparently either of your pronunciations of Ncuti are fine—he said in an interview recently that his mother calls him as it’s pronounced in Kinyarwanda, which is with a nasalized “ch” sound—if you hum “nn” and pronounce “CHU-tee”, it’s pretty close. But growing up in Scotland most people treated the N as silent. He said when he became an actor and people started caring how his name was pronounced, he chose “SHU-tee”, just because he likes it. So any of those three are probably fine. It’s a little like a Dick Cheney thing, where it doesn’t matter how the person pronounces their name themselves (“CHEE-nee”), but how everyone else does (“CHAIN-ee”, which his daughter Liz uses). And that’s the only comparison I think I (or anyone) should ever draw between Ncuti Gatwa and Dick Cheney!

I remember in an interview with the showrunner RTD, he recalled that they had a different person in mind for the role of the doctor but Ncuti knocked it out of the park with his audition. I can see why he got the job, he was amazing this ep. I think we will have an amazing series.

I've been absolutely loving these new Doctor Who episodes! I'm so excited to see what happens. I'll be honest, I usually don't love the new Doctors until after a few eps but I LOVE Ncuti's Doctor.

I think for a movie reaction you would all enjoy the Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) it's a magical adventure action movie with an amazing cast! Love all your reactions, thank you for all that you do :)
