Rev. Mark Meyers from Indiana is back on the Q&A to talk to me about the rejuvenation of his Star Wars fandom in the wake of The Mandalorian and The Rise of Skywalker. We talk about how, despite liking the film, the fan fallout from The Last Jedi affected his overall passion for the Saga and how he regained his excitement late last year. We get a little morbid talking about my desire for a Star Wars-themed funeral and even get into the specifics of planning my memorial service. Good news, everyone who supports RFR on Patreon is invited! I also recount how I grew out of Star Wars in my teenage years and my road to return in the late eighties/early nineties. Plus, Rev. Mark's kids supplied him with some great questions about Baby Yoda and Vader's charred helmet. We even talk about Star Wars radio dramas, collecting and comics. I had a great time talking to Rev. Mark and you'll have fun listening! - Jimmy Mac

This was a lot of fun. A couple different comments on some of the topics. 1) I agree that Solo looked visually different then the saga films but I loved it. I thought the film lighting / characters had a film noir quality. Also, it’s possible the dark lighting was intended to help us visually feel the underworld since that’s while we were dealing with in the movie. Just my opinion and I could be way off. 2) I too bought the Star Wars Sourcebook as I exited the Star Tours ride at Disneyland. I think I was there on New Year’s Eve day back in 1987. I loved that book and learning about all of the details I never knew. I read it over and over. 3) I have a similar story to yours about buying POTF figures for $.50 each. I was at the mall with my mom in the 1980’s and she suggested we stop at K-Bee Toys. When we got there they had two huge round bins full of POTF action figures three for $1.50. At this point I didn’t have any of this series as “I was too old”. My mom asked me multiple times if I wanted her to buy a bunch for me and I said no because I was too old to play with toys. I wish she wouldn’t have listened to me. Ughhhhhh

So the short story A Perfect Weapon, which is about Bazine Natal (who we are in Kanata's castle) is about the procurement of a mysterious object that is heavily suggested to be Vader's helmet.

Totally with ya Jimmy on TROS. One of the most emotionally satisfying films I’ve experienced despite having doubts going in

I'm not calling the film perfect but man, it hit me in all the feels. I want to save that feeling, while still picking apart the story and movie in a critical way. Wish me luck!

I was thinking the same thing as you about the lighting of Solo. For an underworld story, I think it makes all the sense in the world to have it be shady for shady characters. I admit, it has taken me some time to adjust to the difference in color palette, but I think it's in line with how Lucas was all about experimentation, too. Especially with having seen how Underworld was gonna look.

This was a great episode! Something that you mentioned really lit a fire under me that I've been struggling with as a fan for a long time now. So I was thinking about the old EU continuity, and how this conversation goes back to something we had talked about a little while ago. I kinda feel like Disney really shot itself in the foot by cancelling that whole continuity to start over, when they already had a really rock solid fan base who had been on board for decades following all those stories. A lot of people, including myself, felt really betrayed by that stint of cancellation. I don't understand why they couldn't at least have had the old line of continuity continue alongside the new. Especially considering where the old was going, building up the Solo and Skywalker descendents in the future, and telling really expansive and epic stories of the Jedi and Sith in the ancient past. A lot of people, like myself, wanted to know how a number of those stories were going to wrap up, as Disney cancelled a number of them before they ended. There were one or two series that were even just about to be published. Those stories mattered to people, dang it!

This goes in line with my philosophy that "canon" is an overused but largely misunderstood or misapplied word that is far too restrictive towards creativity and storytelling potential, locking stories in corners they would ordinarily never have been locked into. A story is just a story, man! That's why I loved those old Star Wars Tales comics, where literally anything was possible, like retelling the films themselves. It's kinda like what Sam Witwer said, that the storytellers should be about adding possibilities, not taking them away.
