Okay, hopping in about the squeaky wheel getting the grease in local govt. You are very much right Poodle - so much gets accomplished and decided in local government based on who writes in, shows up to meetings to testify or does a petition around a topic. If a councilor or commissioner doesn't hear from a group, but does hear from others, they generally will listen to those who speak up. A difficult thing local government employees have is connecting with a wider range of people besides the John and Jane Smith who always write in or testify. Posting on social media happens, but how much can a government describe the process of applying for funding for a new paving project before the public unfollows all together? It's not sexy. What about our older residents not on Facebook and who only read the paper? Do we pay $1000 to post an ad there for the day? What about changing the times of meetings from a 6PM start to a 12PM start for testimony to help those who have family duties in the evening? Well, this helps some people, but disadvantages others who work odd shifts or don't have evening transportation due to buses shutting off at a certain time of night. It's a delicate balance to engage with everyone. Sissies! Engage with your local government. Check out their website and Council / Commission agenda. Local government employees want to hear from you!!!
