Return to Amish is the Breaking Amish spin-off! Which i think is just because everyone except Jeremiah left the show so they made it a new thing, but it’s the same basic show. One of the girls on the current season is either a cousin or a sibling of someone from the first season of Breaking Amish And now I’m going to reevaluate my life for knowing this

Ohio sissy here who lives in the Netherlands and speaks Dutch and some German. We have a large Amish population in NE Ohio. The language is not Dutch; it is German. Called Pennsylvania Dutch. High German speakers have a difficulty understanding them because it is an old dialect.

Fun fact: I once met someone who dealt in Amish buggies. Apparently many are totally pimped out inside (padded silk velvet walls a la Dangerous Liaisons opera boxes ) - a gift to be simple my ass!

I went to a progressive Quaker boarding / day school. A barn on our campus burned down in my senior year & it was rebuilt by Mennonite contractors. I spoke with a few of them since I did work at the stables. Of course it was all men and young boys with flip phones lol. If you’re in Philly there is a food market and you HAVE to pick up some bacon from them, they do amazing meat — that’s where you’ll see the girls and women. I have unfortunately seen recent documentary series ‘ Sins Of The Amish’ about Amish communities and abuse / child marriages similar to LDS communities where there is a culture of non reporting and child labor. There’s a lot less focus on this in the media IMO because they are isolated in plain sight. Unlike modern fundie communities whose doctrine has them on some world domination eugenics type of agenda .. anyway — like Poodle I am obsessed with cults and religious communities. FASCINATED. La Luz Del Mundo is a great one with a docu on HBO & you may be able to find a few branches in LA

Yep! I'm in Missouri and bought a farm in the middle of nowhere. My only neighbor is Amish. They are so nice. I trade them electricity for hay. I pay for the electricity that runs their well and heaters for the troughs in the winter and have it hooked up to my line/account and he brings hay for my animals. Love them. The only concerning thing is that they are allowed to use trucks for farming/work purposes and the 2 times I have seen his wife she is riding in the front seat with a baby on her lap. Makes me so nervous.

I know the men in the Amish community here have beards if they are married and are clean shaven if single. They don't wear jewelry so this is how you can tell who is taken.

Correction note, Jake!: they don’t speak “Dutch” as it means to us (the official language of the Netherlands). Pennsylvania Dutch is derived from German (Deutsch). Modern Amish trajectory has little to do with the Netherlands directly, but rather Germany and Swiss Germany. Whereas mennonites can be traced to Anabaptism in Holland. Amish broke off from Mennonites in Europe before the migration here. Even though Dutch is a Germanic language, German is not similar enough to be interchangeable. However German speakers can generally pickup Penn Dutch, but couldn’t quite have a conversation. There’s some vids on YouTube of Germans reacting to Penn Dutch which is fun for language lovers. Anyway, I figured you’d wanna know cuz this is NOT a mistake you can allow yourself to make in front of other etymological/glot nerds 🤣

I love this series and love that y’all covered an episode! Since we’re being all “actually,” Breaking Amish wasn’t about Rumspringa. They were older and had mostly already done that. You find out later that the “budding young love” between Abe and Rebecca (Eeb and Reebaykka) was kind of fake because they already had a kid together that was conveniently never mentioned when he asked her on a “first date.” Sabrina (Mennonite) and Jeremiah (Amish) were both adopted from English birth mothers. Sabrina later goes to discover her Puerto Rican family, and when Jeremiah tried to find his birth dad last season that storyline turned out to be pretty depressing and not even funny. The whole TLC-Amish world is worth bingeing IMO. They’re pretty much all monsters, but in a refreshing way, like not even a backwards upbringing can depress the human spirit. These dorks absolutely have it in them to get wasted and hook up, God bless ‘em. Kate Stoltz(fus) is a professional Grade A home-grown bitch who peaced out pretty early in the series.

It’s so funny listening to you guys talking about this because it’s such a niche community. My boyfriend grew up surrounded by the Amish in Lancaster. It’s normal to be late to school or work and blame it on being stuck behind a horse and buggy the whole way.

I went to a very preppy private school in Greenwich, CT for middle school and Lily Pulitzer dresses were SUPER popular when I was in 6th or 7th grade, mid to late 90s. I went to a really preppy college in CT and there were a few girls wearing them there too
