Add a Faux Fur Cuff to Your Peter Pan Bolero (Patreon)
Content
Hi all! I hope you've all been enjoying this month's project, the Peter Pan Bolero! So many of us have been stuck at home, so I've been whipping up several of these to help pass the time (#stayhomeandsew everyone). My latest version has the faux fur collar and pom pom ties from the pattern, but I also added fur cuffs! It was super easy to do, so I wanted to show you how.
Fabric notes: the bolero is made in a black boucle knit and the collar, pom poms and cuffs are made in this leopard faux fur.
Directions:
1. Calculate your cuff dimensions: Construct your bolero and measure the circumference of the sleeve opening at the wrist. The size 6 measured 8.5" around the opening, so my cuff needed to be that length plus two 5/8" seam allowances for a total length of 9.75". I decided I wanted the finished height of the cuff to be 2" plus a seam allowance on the top and bottom for a total height of 3.25". So my cuffs needed to be 9.75" long by 3.25" tall.
2. Cut two rectangles with these dimensions for your cuff. Have the nap of the fur going down.
3. Pin and stitch cuffs RS together, along the short ends. The cuffs will form little rings. Finger press seam allowances open.
4. Pin and stitch cuffs to bolero. Turn bolero wrong side (WS) out. Put sleeve inside cuff, with WS of bolero facing right side (RS) of cuff. Match cuff seam to bolero underarm seam. Have nap going down toward sleeve opening. Pin bolero and cuff together at raw edge of sleeve opening. Stitch together at 5/8". Grade seam allowances so that bolero seam allowance is slightly shorter than cuff seam allowance.
5. Turn cuff to RS of bolero. Turn in 5/8" at upper edge of cuff and pin in place.
6. Slip stitch upper edge of cuff in place by hand.
That's it! It's really so simple. Please let me know if you have any questions!
xoxo,
Gertie
