Eric

You said "Gadiator" lol Like the movie Gladiator but instead of Russ Laroque it's Josh Gad.

Eric

I'm gonna write, like, an essay on Gladiator vs Troy, but short version: "What we do in life echoes in eternity" vs "Do you know what's there, waiting, beyond that beach? Immortality! Take it, it's yours!" ("I'd rather fight beside you than any army of thousands. Let no man forget how menacing we are; we are lions!") ("Am I lion?")

anacolli

Lol, I always mess up something in my uploads. But something funny as well, I techincally have not watched Troy either

Daniel M

Thanks for the reaction to the first part Ana. Are you posting the rest sometime soon?

Will

Unfortunately, there's a 2 hour streaming limit on Dropbox so you need to download it. Be warned, it's a 4.1 GB file!

Topher 😃

Thanks for mentioning this was 3 hours. Given dropbox's 2 hour limit I'll dl it now and watch it in the future. I've never seen it and was happy with that decision, but you guys have proven my biases wrong before, so I will get to t.

I watched it when my mom had the TV on because she loooved Brad Pitt and she watched it whenever it was on. But I was little and only remember little moments of it. Like images and stuff like that.

I tend towards lighter fare; light, breezy, watchable movies (or books, tv shows, whatever). I keep struggling to find the right words to define this duality because it's hard to find neutral words for both sides. All I can think of to describe a movie like Gladiator is "heavy" or "dense". It's a good movie; my guess is that (if you're anything like me) you'll at the very least *appreciate* that it's a very good movie, you'll appreciate why so many people love it, you'll appreciate some fantastic performances, and you'll probably enjoy the movie and be relatively happy you watched it... and will probably not feel the need to watch it again for quite some time. (The best version of this that I can think of is The Social Network. Like, that's a *great* fucking movie, with an incredible cast, a phenomenally talented director, and fantastic writing... but man, I just *do not* give a shit about the story or characters.)

Eric

I think it's such a great counter-point to Gladiator to demonstrate what is and isn't right up my alley. Because while I appreciate that both are very good movies (Troy is maybe a bit divisive? Seems like a lot of people thought it was underwhelming. I wonder if opinion on that has changed with the perspective of time) but Gladiator is just the perfect example of the type of movie I will pretty much never come back to, while Troy is very watchable to me. Not that Gladiator isn't good, or that Troy is shallow fun but... I don't know, there's something about Troy that just makes it an easier watch, to me. While Gladiator is... heavy? In a way I can't really articulate but I know it when I see it. Troy has a phenomenal cast, too. Apparently some people think Brad Pitt did a bad job because he seemed bored? But that always struck me as an acting choice: Achilles is kind of adrift, he's not really sure what he wants out of life. He's probably the best swordsman in the world but that doesn't really bring him any happiness. I thought Pitt played that well, I didn't think that was "bad acting" at all. (Apparently he's a bad person, but dude is charismatic as fuck.) Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson played brothers; fantastic casting, both because they look the part, but also they're just both great actors. (I'd be fucking *floored* if anybody said of Cox or Gleeson "I'm just not a fan." It'd be unfathomable.) Eric Bana as Hector is so likeable, a very heroic and admirable man. Orlando Bloom is hard to like as Paris, sniveling little weakling, but that's the role; he did a good job. Peter O'Toole as Priam is so good, the perfect aging respected king, and Sean Bean as Odysseus is really good... kind of similar to Ned Stark but with a bit more charm and humor. I'm a big medieval fantasy dork, but the sword and sandals sub-genre isn't really my thing, typically... Troy is an exception. But I likely won't be pushing for it anytime soon. I've got a handful of more important movies I want to see you react to first. (Walk Hard foremost among them. Also Se7en and Fight Club. Ocean's 11 and 12? Maybe Men Who Stare At Goats. Then American Psycho, Burn After Reading... Troy is in the mix with those 2. Along with Mr Right and Stretch, although both are pretty deep cuts so not likely to win any polls. And From Dusk 'til Dawn is maybe only a 6/10 or perhaps 7/10 movie, but a really interesting react choice, I think... for reasons I can't get into, of course.)

Eric

Is Troy the only Brad Pitt movie like that for you? Because some time ago I asked about both Se7en and Fight Club and you said you hadn't seen them.

Topher 😃

I enjoyed the social network. Gladiator was one of those movies that was so hyped up before I had a chance to see it that I lost all interest in doing so. But with Ana as a draw it will soon happen.

Eric

So... I don't feel bad for Marcus Aurelius. I'm glad Joker killed him actually; he's a bad bloke and he deserved to die. He's a bad bloke and he knows it. He spent his life war-mongering and then at the end he's like "Russell Crowe, fix all my problems." All Rusty Laroque wanted to do was go home to his wife and family, and Marcus Aurelius was like "but I spent my entire life ignoring my duties, so now it's your job to fix it. Aren't you honored? You're welcome." I'm glad he died.

Daniel M

Thanks for reacting to this Ana. I know it was long but you seemed to really like it at least. I do not think there was any reason to make a sequel. They should have left things as is. From what I hear Gladiator 2 is not very good.
