Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Hope your family gathering goes better than this one 😳

kelly

The irony of a big familial feast

Dani

could not have picked a funnier day to drop this

ZitherManifesto

you two are no longer sweet summer children and are now ready for winter.

Elesh

The reason Catelyn looked so terrified when the song started to play, is because the band played "Rains of Castamere" which is if you remember from Cersei explaining it to Margery a lannister song, and a brutal legacy of Tywin destroying whole house that rebelled against him.

MacJordanT

Singing “turn around” while the Starks approach the Frey’s is crazy

Brian West

Yea sorry girls. It gets better. Happy taking over America day tho.

TokyoLopez

Never gets any less painful 😖

MKF1004

If I remember correctly, HBO dropped the original Season 4 finale on Father's Day (no spoilers, but if you know, you know...)

Yaboi

the will byers haircut burn was legendary. Never let them live it down lmfao

Pabb

And all of the musicians playing it didn't look like your typical performers.

Bany

I've been waiting for this episode, the first time I watched it I had pretty much the same reaction. They did a good job during the entire Rob story this episode of making you feel like something was just a little bit off. I didn't know it at the time but the song thats being played at the end that makes Catelyn look so shook is a Lannister song called the The Rains of Castamere, which if you remember from the previous episode Cersei talks about the Reyne house and how Tywin destroyed them.

Eduardo Perez

Ah yes, the original Thanksgiving story

Athasin

The episode we were all waiting for.

Kara

In Westeros "Guest Rights" are a sacred tradition, like a religious commandment or law. At the start of the ep when we see Walder Frey share chicken and salt with Robb, that's what they were doing. It means you promise someone protection while they're your guest, it's one of the oldest and most important traditions. It makes sense because without it, nobody at war would ever sit down with the enemy, but if you know 1000% you'll be safe under guest rights, you can parlay, negotiate, have safe passage, surrender etc. The Freys broke this tradition. It might be the worst religious crime you can commit in Westeros. That's why nobody expected it. It means you're going to straight to hell in the Westerosi religion. It might be worse than any sin, murder, incest, kin-slaying etc. Once you do this there's no going back, everyone knows you're an oathbreaker and never ever to be trusted. That's how little of a fuck Walder Frey and his men give.

Ludus Aurea

This is the episode I started at - I mean, everyone wouldn't shut up about omg the red wedding, so I started at S01E01 the day after it aired and caught up before the end of Season 3. I literally yelled at my TV when it happened. What happens is bad enough, but I think it's next episode when Arya shows up where they do the most fucked up thing anyone has done in this entire show to this point. Maybe even the entire show. I refer to the wolf head.

Ludus Aurea

Based on real life, or inspired by I mean. The hearth used to be sacred to the Romans and guest rights were too. The Frey's are no-class savages, but that was obvious from the incest.

Athasin

And yep, that's the Red Wedding. To this day (10 years later) I remember exactly how sounded while she begged for Robb's life. And her scream when all the begging did nothing.

Kara

100%, I didn't want to bloat my comment any more, but like a lot of things in Thrones its based on real historic tradition with a bit of a twist.

Chief Doodle

That's right, let them tears out :D

Eric Wallace

I hope someone gave Arianna a hug. Between this and Return of the King, I haven't seen her cry this much

Joe Blankenship

Welp, that's one less story line to keep track of.

Sean Irvin

Fun fact: one actually WAS a typical performer. The drummer who played 'Rains' is the actual drummer for Coldplay.

Jonathan Blaze

I like the subtle way they showed the difference between Robb and Tywin, In Season 2 they were both in the field fighting a war. But in Season 3 Tywin is CHILLING in Kings Landing, while Robb is still in the field meandering around the Riverlands. Tywin wins the war sitting at a desk writing letters, not even fully focused on Robb. Robb was completely outmatched. Plus Tywin owed Robb one for kidnapping Jaime, and A Lannister Always Pays His Debts.

Xavier Chandler

Maple during the theme song was giving Julia Stiles Save the Last Dance vibes😂

Chris Bruneau

yeah, remember back when I said I threw the book against wall? well, this was THAT time....

kelly

Meandering is the perfect way to describe it. Meandering and getting his dick wet. Boy got too big for his britches despite being advised to do the opposite of what he was doing. Hate to see it!

kelly

I started watching GoT shortly after this season aired, and I was in the middle of reading the first book. I had been watching the episode while I was cleaning (I know lol) and was stopped in my tracks when everything started happening. I was stunned. I could not believe they took it there. After it was over, I remember looking around to no no one and saying "WELL WHAT DO WE DO NOW???!!" lol man. What a time.

kelly

So much to say about this. Can't wait for the rest of the girl's journey.

Joshua Luzania

Michelle Fairley as Catelyn nails this episode. Her performance really sells it.

OldManGrim

The reactions to the original airing of this is what got me into the show; even though already spoiled, it was still a "holy shit what the hell just happened" moment when I watched it. Catelyn knew immediately everything was fucked when she heard the band hit "the rains of castemere", which as we all found out at the beginning of this episode, is basically the fight song of the Lannisters. Robb also gloated and boasted too much, similar to the Castemere family. And when you hear that song, you also know who is behind whatever is about to happen. Also the memes that were birthed from the Red Wedding! Robb sitting there, "I've made a terrible mistake" XD

Renaldo Allard

The red wedding gets viewers every time it was so shocking to see them kill off so many good characters

Jonathan Blaze

True. He was thinking with his dick. I left that part out trying not to be too harsh. R.I.P Robb and little Ned.

Aridevo

Anytime a Stark chooses Love over Duty, people die.
