Here are some recipes for ritual oils you could try! Do you have any suggestions for any ritual oil recipes? This article contains a lot of correspondences if you wanted to make your own combination.
A magickal oil is a pure or mixed oil created with a specific purpose in mind with visualization and energy manipulation. They are known for being used often in ceremonies and rituals. Oils can also be used on people and objects to anoint or dress which are essentially two words meant to apply an oil.
To use an oil to dress an object like a candle, you can rub oil downward on the candle to attract and upward to banish. Many like to also then roll the candle in herbs, glitter, and flower petals. You can get creative with the candle’s color and the oil type for a powerful mixture.
To anoint, place a drop of oil on the skin — often on a pressure point or forehead — on a charm, amulet, talisman, crystal, or candle.
Blessing or charging a pure or mixed oil blends the powerful energies of the oil and your intention into yourself or an object.
Using oils is a great way to infuse a simple item with intention and energy.
Oils are often incorporated into many different practices — magickal or not. To begin using oils in your every day life, put a few drops of an oil on your skin, stone, in a bath, oil burner, or diffuser.
To use oils in magickal practice, you can choose oils:
- that you like the smell of
- to help you focus on spellwork
- according to their correspondences
Whichever the purpose, always remember to visualize your intention to get the most magick out of them.
Types of Oils
Anointing oils — A sacred oil that’s blessed and charged and specially formulated for a specific purpose, usually for people.
Carrier oils — Vegetable and mineral oils that are used to help dilute essential oils that could cause skin irritation.
Condition oils — Anointing or conjure oils used to help relieve or improve someone’s condition.
Conjure oils — A dressing oil from an ancient practice usually African, European, or Native American traditions. Often found in Hoodoo.
Dressing oils — Specially prepared oil applied to spell and ritual objects before using them to sanctify, charge, and prepare them for use.
Essential oils — Volatile, concentrated oils, with the characteristic scent of the plant/flower they are from.
Ritual oils — Oils used to anoint candles, ritual tools, material, furniture, money, and other such items, and then use to anoint the body are often also called anointing oils.
Magickal oils are most easily made by mixing essential oils or dried herbs with a carrier oil. A carrier oil won’t change the scent of the oil blend and dilutes it just enough to be used on the skin. My favorite carrier or base oil is jojoba. It’s technically a liquid form of wax that won’t leave your skin feeling oily. It’s recommended by Scott Cunningham to mix 5 to 7 drops of essential oil per 1/8 cup of carrier oil.
*Absolute oils are essential oils mixed with carrier oils but may contain traces of the chemical solvents. It’s a more affordable option but not recommended for medicinal or aromatherapy uses.
It’s also fun to add special ingredients like crystal chips, flowers, and herbs to make it your own.
