Tuesday’s are great for activating your amulets and talismans because this day is all about taking action! In this post, it discusses the differences between amulets and talismans and how to use them. Do you have one of these that you use? Comment below!

Throughout history and across the globe, people have worked with the power of amulets and talismans. Ancient civilisations such as the Assyrians, Egyptians, Babylonians and Arabs used amulets in medicine as well as in protection and attracting good fortune. These beneficial items have been created from and range of materials including stone, bones, metal, herbs and symbols and sigils.

Many varieties of crystal are also believed to have powerful properties when used as amulets or talismans. The Ancient Egyptians believed that carnelian offered powerful protection against negative energies and witchcraft and many cultures, including the ancient Greeks believed that protective talismans were necessary in all dealings with the underworld.

What Is the Difference Between Amulets and Talismans?

Although these terms may be used interchangeably, they are in fact different items with distinct uses.

Amulets are used for defence and protection against harmful energies, events and disease. The function of the amulet can be to protect against a specific threat: for example amulets used by sailors to protect against lighting and other bad weather while at sea or more generalised such as shielding you from negative energy given off by others. Amulets protect and defend us against what is around us or sent to us by others.

Talismans, on the other hand, are used in attraction. Like amulets they have a vast number of uses and can be used in a general or more targeted way. For example, a talisman may be used to attract good luck to our lives or bring us success in a new venture, test or exam. Both amulets and talismans are commonly worn or carried with a person but they can also be used in other ways. Protective amulets are often used over doors and windows of houses or on buildings such as stables and barns to protect those inside from harm. When using talismans in attraction they may be carried with us but equally may be kept in relevant places such as with school books or on a desk when studying for exams or in a cash box when aiming to attract wealth or luck in money matters.

How to Use Crystal Amulets and Talismans

When creating both amulets and talismans, you will need to be clear in what your intent for the item is. If you are unclear or too general in your intent, it can lead to reduced or a complete lack of results. Materials can be selected based on given properties listed in books and other guides or you can work with items that you feel drawn to in achieving your purpose. You may also like to use a combination of both: for example when new to working with amulets and talismans or working with unfamiliar crystals, you may wish to check on their properties and how other people have found them useful. This is completely fine and even if you are more experienced with crystals, there are so many varieties it is unlikely you could remember every property of every variety! There is no harm or shame in double-checking your thoughts and it will not make your finished item any less effective.

Your finished item can be as simple or elaborate as you wish and neither is better than the other. It also does not have to use the most expensive or largest crystals you can find. If it is what calls you, a simple pebble from the beach can be just as powerful as an intricate crystal and silver pendant or charm. After all, hag stones have long been considered powerful protection against a range of scenarios. As well as selecting appropriate materials for your amulet or talisman, you many also wish to look into considerations such as whether a specific day of the week or moon phase is thought to bring extra power to your intent.

Crystal amulets and talismans can be easily incorporated into your life. Many common stones, such as amethyst, hematite and sapphire can be found made into jewellery and less common varieties may be available from specialist retailers and artisan jewellers. Crystal jewellery is also often sold in alternative and metaphysical shops. If you prefer it is possible to buy a wide range of crystal beads and other items for creating your own piece of jewellery. If you cannot or prefer not to wear jewellery, crystals can also be carried with you in a pocket or bag or tucked in your bra or sock pit of sight. If it fits into your intent crystal amulets can also be placed in your house or used in crystal grids. One way to use them in this way is to create a grid of protective stones around your house. Selenite is often used for this purpose but should only be placed inside. Black tourmaline is also a good choice of crystal.

As with any work with crystals, all items used in making amulets and talismans should be cleansed before use. Once it has been chosen or created the item is then charged with intent. This can be done in many ways and will depend on your specific beliefs and path and range from complex rituals to a simple prayer or meditation.

Using Birthstones

Certain gemstones have been traditionally associated with each month of the year and are known as birthstones. Many people believe that a person’s birthstone is especially lucky or beneficial for them to work with. Birthstones may also be chosen based on a person’s zodiac sign and may vary between religions and countries. Birthstone lists have been revised several times over the years and the list that is currently generally accepted was devised by the International Gem Society in the early 20th century.

Which Crystals to Use as Amulets and Talismans?

When creating crystal amulets and talismans it is likely that you will have the choice of several stones suited to your intent. How you choose between these is a matter of personal choice and you may wish to go with the crystal that you feel most drawn too, have worked with before or are most familiar with. Crystals can also be chosen based on those you already own, or if you are looking to add to your collection you could choose a new stone that interests or draws you.

As with crystal properties in healing and magic it is fine to go with the crystals that you sense will fit your intent the best. You can also use a good crystal guide book or website to help you in deciding. Some examples of uses for crystals for your amulets or talismans include:
