Sigils are creations that are enchanting, full of magic and empowering for the creator. They are symbols you make that are infused with your intention into a single symbol. They are used for manifestation, reaching your potential, and achieving your goals and dreams. Sigils are very powerful because they are coded with your unique intention and purpose that can only be deciphered by you and the Universe. This lets your intention stay a secret and not get affected by other energies while your inner divine and the Universe work their magic. The Peculiar Brunette adds, “Making a sigil is the process of creating a symbol or image to bring a desire to fruition through your subconscious mind. Incorporating sigil magic into your practice can take your spirituality to the next level.” Let’s talk more about how to create, activate and use your sigils!

What are Sigils?

Sigils are symbols that are personal to you! You can also make them for other people, but it is really powerful when it is yours that you created yourself. I’ve personally seen videos of someone created a sigils for the group and they collectively worked on it together! It was great!

From Well Divined, “A “sigil” is the Latin word for “seal” which deems something as official, real and, done. Making symbols with an intention in mind means you consider your desire as manifested.

When you make intentions for Sigils, you do not speak as though you’re just expressing what you wish to happen. It’s best to use phrases that begin with “I am” as if you have already received the blessing and avoid negative phrases such as “I am not” and “I will not”, as this could easily be turned upside down. Hold these intentions until you can write them down in preparation for the making of your sigil.”

The Art of Surrender

Well Divined also states, “What makes sigil magic different from other types of spellwork is its dominant reliance on surrender. A traditional practice of surrendering is by burning the sigil and forgetting what was cast.

Surrender is crucial in sigil magic because it releases any self-doubt and other biases that may influence the manifestation of your desire. Although forgetting may not be possible, it is important to honor the wisdom of life – that what will be, will simply be.

Cherish every moment and embrace every obstacle that’s given to you. It might just be what you need to carve a path to your goals. Surrender doesn’t mean ‘no-action’. A sigil doesn’t work without your hard work, dedication, and perseverance.”

How to Make a Sigil

So first it’s important to know that there are a few different techniques to make a sigil, but what I’m about to share is one to the more common ones, called a word sigil. There are also pictorial sigils and magic squares, too.

What you need to make a Sigil:

- A clear, specific intention

- Pen (or something else to write with, you can use crayons, markers, Sharpies, etc)

- Paper (or something else to write on, you can use bay leaves for example!)

Next, how to make a sigil...

Set your Intention

Magic begins with purpose and your intention is the most important part of any work with magic! Setting your intention is the most important part of making a sigils. It’s important to make sure that your goal or intention is specific and clear. You’d also want to focus on it being positive so your guides and the Universe are not confused. Ask yourself what your true motivation is and be fully aware of what it is you’re really asking for.

Well Divined recommends you ask yourself these questions:

Does it respect the free will of others? Will it cause pain to others? Will it harm the planet? Spells can be incredibly powerful. Take caution.

Once you have your intention, write it down!

Cross out Letters

Next, take all the vowels from what you just wrote. For instance, in the example from the article on Well Divined, if your intention is to be spiritually protected, this is what could come up with:

“I am spiritually protected”

M SPRTLLY PRTCTD

Now, discard all repeating letters.

M S P R T L Y C D

This is what you should have by the end of this step.

Mumbles and Things suggests, “You can break down the letters into simpler shapes (lines and curves) or leave them as they are. You're choice.”

Make your Symbol

Once you set up and cross out everything, you should be all set to create your sigil!

When making your sigil, all you have to do is create a symbol with the letters you have left. Mumbles and Things says, “Play around with these shapes to try to fit them into a single glyph. It’ll take some rearranging and several attempts to get it from the weird looking blob into a power symbol, but just keep trying until it looks like something you like.” It may be easier said than done, but when creating your own sigil, it doesn’t have to be extravagant, fancy or elegant. It simply just need to be something you connect with and enjoy!

Activate your Sigil

One of the more popular ways to activate your sigil is by destroying it. By doing so, you are surrendering your intention and letting the Universe and your inner magic do it’s job. This also avoids any energies that may disrupt your intention, too.

There are also a variety of ways to activate your sigil once you have created it! (In another post I’m working on, we’ll talk about more creative ways to use sigils, but for this post well be talking about different ways to destroy and release one.)

Here some ways to destroy and release a sigil:

– Burn your sigil that’s written on paper or a bay leaf

- Carve into a candle and burn it (burning is the most common technique and can also be used while also simultaneously activating your sigil)

- Tear it up

- Release into a stream, river, or water of choice

- Bury them

- Release into the wind

- Erase it if written in pencil

Now your work is done! It’s important to release and surrender your sigil so it doesn’t preoccupy your thoughts. You want your sigil to leave your conscious mind and simmer in your unconscious mind.

Notes

Sigil Notebook

Maggie Haseman has a brilliant suggestion, “Many of the methods for activating sigils require you to destroy them. This is why is can be nice to keep a record of the ones you’ve drawn. That way anytime in the future, if you want to reuse a sigil for the same purpose you can just go back and look it up, you don’t need to design a new one which can be a long process.

If you decided to destroy your sigil, make a ritual out of it. Spend some time with it before you send it out into the universe and your unconscious. You may want to record your sigil and corresponding intentions into your grimoire, Wiccan Book of Shadows, or spiritual journal for reference later.”
