At the same time, the spearhead of the Imagawa army, Matsudaira Motoyasu (later Tokugawa Ieyasu), was waiting in front of the fort of the Oda army to take charge. Suruga's supreme commander, Imagawa Yoshimoto, was advancing with a 25,000-strong army to take Owari, the territory of the Oda family.

Early the next morning, Nobunaga disappeared from Kiyosu Castle with only five of his page. When Nobunaga's birth mother, Dota Gozen, says he ran away out of fear, Nohime assures her that he will never run away and worries about Nobunaga's safety. Nobunaga moved people he trusted, such as Kinoshita Tokichiro, to gather information on the Imagawa army, and discovered that Yoshimoto was not heading for Odaka Castle, but was in Okehazama, ready to fight Oda Nobunaga's army. Eventually, the retainers arrived at the main camp of the Oda army with their troops, but their number was only about 2,000, and the gap with the Imagawa army was overwhelming.
