In the book, Miller was a good detective who descended into an alcoholic spiral after his wife divorced him, and he became a joke within Star Helix Security. Captain Shaddid assigned the Julie Mao kidnap job to Miller precisely because she didn't want Julie to be found (the OPA had their own ongoing search for her), and believed Miller was too incompetent to find Julie. But he got inside her life and was impressed by her idealism and selflessness; eventually Miller fell in love with his mental image of Julie. As his investigation progressed, Miller's love evolved into a near obsession. Also, your speculations are fairly accurate - but don't worry, all will be revealed eventually!

Thanks for some Miller backstory, it definitely explains lot about his character!! I'm so sad he's found Julie this way though... Can't wait to see more
