Cropping and composition
I really like this set and this kind of shooting. No not because it’s explicit or sexy, although of course I do enjoy that aspect (I’m a human and a man), but crops are one of my favourite things to shoot.
I love the process of framing and composition when shooting crops because most of the rules go out the window.
My process is usually to observe the whole structure of the pose in terms of lines and angles mainly but don’t focus in with your eye - you just want to get an overall picture in your head of what’s happening in the wider context. Then look through the viewfinder and move in. As you move in turn the camera at different angles and adjust your position taking note of how the lines and angles change.
I nearly always find there’s a point in this process where everything in the frame “locks” into place and I know then that this is the composition.
It’s immensely satisfying when everything “locks” 😊😳
If you’re gonna try this kind of thing with your model make sure to brief her really well on what you’ll be doing and what you want to achieve. Obviously, not all models will be comfy with this process.
We also made a video that night that should be amazing and which is in the final round of editing now. Stay tuned.
