Hi, all!
Look at the August pins.. look at them!! They will be finished soon then shipped to me! :) I am happy I picked black plating here. It make the entire pin pop!
DOGGUST
I have been on a roll with Doggust and, while I really hope I can complete the entire challenge, I am so proud of myself for getting this far. I am trying to tell myself to now overthink each piece, not to add too much detail, and to focus more on shape and silhouette. In addition, I wanted to try my best to follow the breed standard, while also making sure I have strong character design.
Here is how I figure out the shapes + finish a Doggust piece!
1) I was struggling with the shapes of a Great Done and did a ton of sketches. While they were just fine, I wanted to push the shapes a lot more. I randomly scribbled this and ended up enjoying the shapes and decided to move forward!
2) Next, I doodled ontop of it to tighten up the sketch. I usually like to use a round brush for sketches but that is just me! I also scribbled in general markings.
3) Next.. I block color! It looks "sloppy" since I didn't lower the opacity enough for the background sketch, lol! I am focusing on making sure the silhouette reads well at this stage.
4) I add nose (plus quick nostrils), eyes, jaw outline, paws, and body details. I did my best to not add to much since the "less is more" principle is really important to me. At this point, I no longer need the sketch to be visible.
5) The stomach + paws are colored a lighter color! I used a gouache brush and get this effect by slapping color on and erasing the details to blind it in.
6) I shaded the back leg + background front leg to help pop out the character more. In addition, I added some light shading on the ears and under the nose!
7) I added fur lines, which mainly includes stray whiskers! I also added some neck wrinkles and eye bags. I played around with the saturation of the image to pop out the dane more.
ALL FINISHED! I hope this demonstrated how I illustrate! If you enjoyed this, please let me know and I can pick another Doggust dog to make as a tutorial next!
