UNKNOWN was actually quite popular among the b-sides from this album when it was first released (it was my fave too). I think a lot still loved the song, but performance wise other songs were presented a lot better so that probably adds up to it why now other songs were more popular to the fans especially BOX. Like from choreo and to the styling, I wish they could have done better for UNKNOWN. But audio wise, no doubt I looove the song 🫶 My take: They should have made BOX as title track too HAHA Whatever fans will like between Box and Smoothie then it would be no problem. Lol but I understand it's just a mini album so a double title track might be a lot 😂 Great discussion from the dreamies. 💚 I also love how transparent they are. They really know what they want.👌 Thankful that the company is letting them make these decisions. As they should!

Funny thing is, after this meeting, Mark changed his decision and wanted to do another song instead of Unknown. They never revealed which song it was, but they did mention it in the last episode of 7’llin with Dream, asking Mark, “Why did you bring it up again and try to decide again?” 😂

I think that Mark was on the right track, because I heard a lot of feedback that Smoothie wasn’t very Dream like when it was released. Unfortunately, they were let down by the choreo and presentation choices for Unknown, like you mentioned. But I do think it was important to show the fans they are still committed to the Dream brand. I think that Haechan was on the right track with Carat Cake and it’s too bad he was shut down so quickly. That song was definitely heading towards going viral when it was first released and I think it would have if it had been promoted. Personally, I haven’t seen a fan favourite level of love for Box, but I suppose I was quite busy when the comeback happened and perhaps I missed it being popular. Finally, I believe that a couple song cannot win a music show because it’s being promoted along with the title track, which is up for nomination.

I think what solidified me to be on team Mark (other than the fact that Unknown is my favourite track on the album) is when he said that he wants dream to continuously show songs that are consistent with their vibe, and that he wants them to be known for having good music rather than good performances. Which of course, is up to every fans different interpretation because we're all looking at it from different lenses and experiences! On my corner on the internet, I saw a lot more people that were attached to Unknown more than Box, but that is also completely dependent on the slice of internet that you're on. I agree however that performance wise, they were let down by the dance, if the higher ups had chosen a different choreo, styling, etc but hindsight's 20 20 and all that 😂 I do have to slightly correct what you thought Jisung said about Box overshadowing Smoothie though; he did say that he was afraid that Box would overshadow Smoothie (I also tend to agree with the statement that it would've made an interesting double title), but he never said that he wanted Unknown because it's lesser than. Edit: This is all coming from a person with the lens of being a vocalist and a songwriter by trade, so I will always, even subconsciously lean towards a song that has stronger messaging first before thinking about the dance aspect. I love the different views we all have!

The timing of release of the video was sorta weird to me. Around the time, I kept seeing a lot of conversation about artistic vision vs trying to hop on trends for other genres and their respective musicians. Jisung’s comment about Box overshadowing Smoothie kinda reminded me of what seemed to be a strong sentiment that Arcade should’ve been the title track instead of Glitch Mode. It wasn’t about lesser than, but like, idk I felt like I could see why they’d want to avoid that if they weren’t doing a double title (which I don’t think they would’ve had time to do properly because of the tour). With Box, maybe the choreo for it would’ve been different if it’d been chosen originally as the couple song, but I do think there’s similar hard-hitting/impactful vibes~ to Smoothie that’s in the TD3 choreography for Box, so I agree with Mark there.

I get Mark with his thoughts on Unknown but I agree with you the message wasn't communicated well with the choreo. Like listening to Unknown and seeing it being performed are two very different experience. Also I am not with Haechan at all for Carat Cake it's the one song I feel like is a little out of place in the theme of this album so no no to it being the couple song haha. He was right though this song would be viral in Tiktok. Jaemin is so funny being the middle person, I think he has a lot of good ideas as well but hearing the others made sense to him so he really just went with it.

I agree it's important for Dream to have a vision about who they are as artists firstly within the NCT brand and then Kpop more generally. If they want to experiment with that that's understandable too, its just reassuring as a fan to know that they are also striving towards a semblance of artistic integrity and "soul" with what they do (not always compatible with the world of Kpop, I know; although BTS, for example, have managed to find a balance b/w great songs, performance and meaning in their music). I know a lot of fans love Box but it's a little dated sounding in my opinion (re: "old school hip hop" feel). Unknown sounds more modern and fresh without being as heavy on the trend hopping as something like Carot Cake. Unknown also has some great rap & vocal moments, lyrics and a beautiful outro. Jeff listen to it without the lackluster costuming and stage direction you might feel differently about it :) The dance practice captures the feel of the song better than the Mnet countdown performance I think. Anyway thanks Jeff for your wonderful reactions and insights I really love hearing your takes on things :)

Ok I'm very late to the discussion but I remember at this time that a lot of fans expressed that they were glad that Mark stood for his choice because Unknown is a great song. They said that originally they preferred BOX but now they realize the picture that Mark was trying to draw. Personally, I'm not in love with either song but I agree with when Mark says it's important to stay on track and maintain a DREAM sound, instead of going with whatever works/sells at the time. You already do that adequately with the Title track so we can be a bit more... expressive with the couple song. And if both title and couple songs have a similar vibe, idk it doesn't do it for me
