Plot Twist (Patreon)

So, to give an update from my last post--my mom's dog, Peanut, is totally fine. She spent a few days sick and then bounced back. So no cancer, which is a relief. Meanwhile, the biopsy my mom got last week that I thought was no big deal actually is cancer, so that's a new and fun thing we're dealing with. Upside--they caught it early. My mom lives with us, so we can help her after her (very likely) surgery coming up. We're not sure if she'll need chemo or anything yet. It's early days and my mom has no symptoms. They caught it during routine screening. Though my mom's particular cancer isn't the kind that has a genetic component, there's been a good amount of cancer in that side of the family and this isn't much of a shock.
I sent the above text to one of my friends before I put it on Twitter, and she felt really bad about laughing. Here's the thing--my mom was an ICU nurse for almost 50 years. She raised three very head strong children. She is basically unflappable. So the fact that she got off the phone and nonchalantly told me she has cancer? Totally on brand. The fact that we made a joke about it? My family thrives on gallows humor. If it had been the dog, there would have been crying. It's not to say that we aren't worried or upset, but my mother and I both tend to take things like this as we go and try not to borrow trouble.
We laugh at things to make them less scary. Anyway, I wanted to give you all an update. Now, back to work! (For me. Not you. I wouldn't tell you what to do.)
