Agreed on how important it is to tweak. Especially with synthesis methods having to do with Physical Modelling (such as modal, Karplus-Strong, waveguide…). The key difference, with those, is that there’s a lot of nonlinearity in how parameters interact with one another. Lots of unexpected results. Subtractive isn’t typically like that. You know in advance the direction in which things go (a lot of it having to do with brightness). In PM, you can go from string to bell to membrane and back. Also, those are synths which do well with expressiveness. Part of the renewed interest in PM comes from MPE. With CLAP and MIDI 2.0, there’s going to be a lot of that.
