Hey y'all. The storm came. My power was out for 52 hours. Since then, the tire fell off of the rim of my Subaru, somebody smashed in the window of my Jeep while I was at a theater fundraiser masquerade (which I got comp'd in to, and left with 4 lbs of beeeeef, thank you FST), and I've made 2 hats and about 70% of a sweater.

I'm generally just really grateful that I have tools, and options, and community. It's been a typical winter. Shit tends to hit the fan in a rolling fashion from October to April, but we prepare and we pivot and we endure. Gets a little easier every year. Like grief, I suppose. Like a lot of things. As long as you're willing to watch, and learn.

At the studio, we've been hitting the songs with rejuvenated creative endurance and energy and fresh ears for about 3 weeks now. We had a good conversation last night about the challenge of being just two people making music, filling out the sound space, and decided really that it's kind of fun. I get to play rhythm, and lead, and bass, and sing, sometimes all at once. Sometimes we switch off. I'm able to loop my guitar in ways that are less structural, so I can be a wee bit sloppy and it doesn't precipitate a catastrophe. Tight loops are a challenge for everybody. I wrote a bass line in Lilac that is asynchronous with the melody that I sing, and it scratches a good brain itch.

Anyway, this is a recording from practice last night. We're not done rewriting/editing/drilling this song, and we're just starting to crack into Just and Machine (both of which need massive restructuring, and better titles). I hope you can hear the progress, and how fun it is to just play and make and change and try new things.

This morning, I'm just reflecting on my projects, and getting myself ready to go stand in line to vote. I'm relieved that the day is finally here, because everyone always acts a little less crazy the morning after the election is finally over. I can't wait to talk about anything else. I hope you all are maintaining a sense of stability and growth out there in this cartoonish and very real and true horrific and miraculous reality we all share. Take care of yourselves. It's all going to pass, and may we all pass through it in sync.
