Before I share my thoughts on this audio, there’s a little bit of preamble that I want to get out of the way: I’ve been a Patron here since late 2016, so I’ve had the privilege of seeing Seanie develop as a character from the very beginning. Although the character of Seanie has been tweaked over time (e.g., you can hear how different his voice was in the very first Seanie audio that Gael ever made), he’s generally been the lovable oaf whose various pursuits always seem to be thwarted by his own ineptitude. He acts as a foil to the suave, sensible Gael, but there’s another huge difference between the two characters that I think is becoming more and more evident over time. One of “Gael’s” biggest appeals is that he’s about as dynamic a character as you can get. With the exception of the Bedtime Stories series, or the rare, multipart, story-driven audios, his personality and mannerisms can vary from audio to audio without causing confusion. He can be an Alpha dom, or a sweet, romantic boyfriend. He can be a professor, a vampire, a bartender, etc. He can basically be whatever the listener wants, which is easy for the audience to pick up on. In contrast, Seanie’s a static character. His personality has been fairly consistent from the get go, and it’s been an integral part of Gael’s comedic work. And since he’s been around for so long, he has developed a bit of a background story arc over time - his failed rap career, his obsession with Taylor Swift, his friendship with the elephant and hyena, his marijuana use, and so on. (I’ll admit that the portrayal of Gael in the Seanie audios is also static, what with him forever being the voice of reason. But I don’t see that as an issue because Gael is always the secondary character in these audios, and any story arcs he’s had have been minimal.) The reason I’m bringing all of this up is because several Seanie audios (especially the more recent ones) have contained references to Seanie’s past story arcs. Some of these references are quite overt, such as the presence of the elephant or hyena. Others are more subtle or obscure to the point of being inside jokes, like mentions of the “Seanie squad”, a term that I believe didn’t even originate on Patreon. I generally don’t mind the inside jokes because I understand most of them, and I always feel a bit chuffed when I can think, <i>”Yes, I know</i> exactly<i> what he’s referring to!”</i> But if the comedic aspect of an audio relies a bit too much on inside jokes, I question if that might be confusing for listeners who are unfamiliar with the character of Seanie. In today’s audio, a lot of the zingers that made me chuckle were the ones about Penelope, but I’ve had the benefit of having listened to Seanie’s past sexual misadventures with his blow-up doll. And I think the chocolate milk references are even harder to make sense of if you don’t know beforehand that that’s Seanie’s term for weed. (As a side bar, the origin of “chocolate milk = weed” is still unclear to me. I <i>think</i> it originated in the “Seanie reads your comments” YT vid with the Pingu clip, and then Gael took the idea and ran with it, what with the subsequent merch designs. But I’m not entirely sure.) Again, I’m not opposed to the presence of inside jokes or references to things/people/places from past Seanie audios in your newer work. If anything, it’s almost inevitable - the static nature of Seanie’s character lends itself to the development of a story arc, and I appreciate the nice walks down memory lane. But I would make sure that any inside jokes are used judiciously since they can result in delight for some listeners and confusion for others, or in a worst case scenario, potentially alienate newer listeners and turn them off the character of Seanie altogether. To switch gears a bit, I had a feeling of déjà vu while listening to today’s audio. Something about it seemed really familiar, so I looked back through Patreon and found this audio from July 29, 2020: https://www.patreon.com/posts/spending-night-39859091 I really enjoyed that audio since <b>[SPOILER ALERT]</b> Seanie finally got a bit of romantic action with an actual beour! During his big night he got to spoon the listener, make awkward references to Penelope, comment on attic-associated insulation and itchiness, joke about “forking”, explain the rather unorthodox presence of an elephant on the property, snore comically, and…wait a minute… The premise of “Spending the Night With Seanie” is a bit different than the premise of today’s audio, but the similarities between the two are striking. Since Seanie audios tend to be few and far in-between, I think it would’ve been really cool to hear a different take on cuddling and falling asleep in Seanie’s arms (if that’s what the specific listener request was?) But if the request was more of a general “Seanie helps the listener fall asleep” one, then there’s lots of potential directions that could’ve gone in, whether it’s Seanie leading a meditation session, or trying to awkwardly sing the listener to sleep, or attempting to create “relaxing” ASMR with the help of the elephant, etc. (To play Devil’s advocate, I know that loads of factors influence the creation of audios, like the availability of recording space and functioning equipment, the amount of time you have to write and record, wanting to incorporate Patrons’ ideas, and so on. But I guess I’ve just never heard two audios that were so similar before with respect to such specific details [and were recorded less than a year apart], even if they did have different premises.) Either way, it was still good to hear Seanie again, and I definitely got some chuckles out of this audio.
