fun fact. Joel Anderson, the director, only directed this. But recently. he produced Late Night with the Devil.

Lake mungo and Kendrick, good day

Another one that really got under my skin. Scares me more than any slasher film ever could. 😰

Do you mind if we just extend the horror movie reactions until next October? They really are so fun.

Any time I show this to someone I always convince them it's a real documentary first

At about 1:13:15...The buildup to the greatest James Jump Scare I've seen so far. I'm still wheeze laughing. Forgive me. 💖

Jennifer

Aha, I knew you'd be spooked out! Thank you for picking my favorite in the polls!

There is a single jump scare in this whole movie and I’ve never once seen it fail

The DP for this film, John Brawley, is a terrific guy and sent me a really nice note after I reviewed Lake Mungo a few years back. His blog post about the movie is filled with a bunch of super-interesting technical stuff and background for the making of the film: https://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/lake-mungo-a-picture-never-lies/

One of my favorites! Have you gone back and watched the footage during the credits yet?

Linda

Your reaction gave me a two in one jump scare. You are able to sit so still sometimes that I think the stream has frozen. 😄

This movie fucking rules. It's a different kind of scary movie for me, because it just feels so raw somehow. But I think what also makes it work for me is that I've seen a bunch of ghost movies, but this feels unlike them somehow. I've seen ghost movies before where I didn't know the goal of the ghost, but not one where I didn't know the intent was good or bad. I spent the first watchthrough just ping ponging between feeling pretty sad and feeling terrified. It's the feeling of not being able to help someone and feeling very aware they could hurt you. And I think the second level of this one is brought out by both the credits footage (which you've seen) but also the footage *after* the credits where they show you all the Alice's in the footage, which you should check out if you haven't too. Basically, if it wasn't clear, the whole psychic connection thing helps when you think about it: The Mom doesn't feel Alice anymore, but Alice is still there. The picture at the end of the movie is just before they move I think, and so is what happens after the credits. The family got their closure, but they didn't actually give it to Alice. She's still there! But she's alone again, just like she was in life. It's crushing.
