Hi all!

As I've been writing over the years, I've found my cadence has changed as my situation has changed in various ways. Over the past few months, I've fallen into a different cadence, and I'm finding myself needing to change the schedule to better match my writing pattern.

Short version: BTDEM is going to move to 2 chapters/week, with NO admin week during the month. It's what I'm currently doing these days anyway.

Long version: Between trying to stick the landing with BTDEM (Holy shit, finishing an epic is SUPER HARD! Starting a story is easy mode, sticking the landing is far, FAR harder than I ever imagined), and a mix of burnout with other mental stuff, I'm finding it super hard to get three chapters a week done. I keep writing two a week, and finding more pushed into my admin week. I don't think I've had a 0 chapter admin week in months - I've always been writing, trying to stay on top of it. Heck, I spent a lot of the Christmas vacation writing and working on stuff! It's clear I need to rethink my approach.

Starting in February I'm going to 2 chapters/week, Monday-Friday, but I'm cutting out admin week. I do most of my admin work every Monday as-is, and spend the rest of the week writing. January's admin week is going to be the week of the 13th... in which I fully expect to be writing the entire time anyway.

This does change the total number of chapters per month, but not by much. 2 chapters a week x 4 weeks = 8 chapters. 3 chapters a week x 3 weeks = 9 chapters. One only chapter difference on months where there are 4 effective posting weeks.

2/week x 5 weeks = 10 chapters

3/week x 4 weeks = 12 chapters

Two chapter difference on months where there are 5 effective posting weeks.

I've been deeply worried about the immediate cry - "This is just extending the end of BTDEM to milk more money out of Patreon!" - I can promise you that's not a factor. If I wanted to milk BTDEM forever, there are SO MANY ARCS I could just throw in for shits and giggles. I could write endless stories, and just keep the ball rolling. I'm not doing that. I've got a book and a half left, I've got all the plots laid out, I know I want to reach the end. I don't want to rush it. I don't want to leave hanging plotlines - except deliberately (CoughPASTOScough) - and I don't want it to be low quality. I also don't want to torture the end too long. I want people to look at BTDEM and say "Yes, it landed in a solid way". (Unlike, say, GOT....)

As much as I'd love to start writing the next project (I'm super excited for it), BTDEM comes FIRST. Which unfortunately means there might be a modest, to significant delay after BTDEM ends before the first chapter of 'Song of the Giftgiver' is posted. Or maybe an entirely different project. (I've got a fun magic school rattling around in my head...). I feel like sitting down and writing those projects though, when BTDEM isn't done and I'm not posting THE BEST on it, would be a betrayal of you all. To me, that's more important than being excited to write a new project. And I don't have the gas to write ALL THE THINGS, unlike some authors.

The last note! I really hope I don't need to go back to admin week, but it's entirely possible I will need to take the occasional week off for my mental health. I wish that wasn't the case. I wish I could sit down at my computer and write 20k words a day. Could you all imagine? We'd get so much story so fast! I just... can't, and it's upsetting. I love nothing more than sharing my world and story with all of you.

Thank you all, for being with me every step of the way.

Cheers!

Selkie

heh

Magic school would be so hype! We didn’t spend nearly enough time at the Academy in BTDEM

What? No resolution for Pastos? *Unsubbed* ... xD

isaiah

Not everyone can be like pirateaba and pump out 50k words like it's nothing

Adam Verdeyen

Completely understandable, as long as chapters are coming out for BTDEM I'll stay subbed to the end of it, love the series and would rather wait for a good ending then risk you burning out and rushing it in favor of the next project

What's GOT?

Losing a chapter or two a month in exchange for no dead weeks is a good trade on the reader's side even disregarding how the change helps you, imo. So it's win/win. Do what you've gotta do to keep yourself in the writing chair!

I hate running into series that don't finish. I just got to like book 11 and so invested, then the author has to stop because the platform that bought the rights to her book screwed her over and she had to stop.

RedInkQuill

Push through and out. You got this. I hope this new schedule works for you.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: I'm here for the quality, not the quantity. I'm not about to quibble about "being cheated a few chapters" - I totally love how this is unrolling and if I have to wait a bit longer to get the quality I'm used to, then wait I shall, looking forward to Mondays and Fridays. Smiling all the way.

Thank you for sharing your world with us! I applaud you for recognizing what works and doesn’t work for you. I’m on a similar journey in learning how to cope with my own perceived mental health “flaws” and how to achieve happiness despite my non-standard mental wiring. Please be kind to yourself on your own journey. 🥰

20k words a day might be a bit much xD how would we ever keep up.

Tiffany Miller

You are by far one of the three most consistent writers on here that I read i also really appreciate the regular updates as well.

Patrizia

I would totally be on board with "milking" btdem for another few books...

Filler arcs can always go into a later short story / novella volume if you're up to it, but I suspect you'll want to take a chunk of time off once the conclusion is written to wind down...

elijah pickett

Thanks for telling and no prob!

SelkieMyth

It would be more Harry Potter style! Hidden magical world inside the real world

Shukketsu

K thanks for the Notice so BTDEM will release just like Path of Ascension.

Mental health weeks should not make you feel bad. Please DO take them as needed. The updated posting makes it more consistent for us too. We don't have to double check that it's admin week, and not 'oh god, Selkie is sick'.

Khal Lee

Hey! I used to wait like what like felt like YEARS BETWEEN BOOKS!!! BOOKS!!!! LoL so yeah one or two chapters less a month is nothing!!! Hugs!!! Thanks for taking me thus far along for the ride that's Elaine ... and now her partner in crime, I mean adventures, Iona. I still enjoy thoughts of those interlude days when Elaine was in Ancient Remus. Best wishes for an adventure filled new year of eldest and creativity!!! And good health!!!

C Gillan

Its your brilliant story and your time. Do whatever you need to feel comfortable and to look after your mental health first. Dont feel guilty please. we can wait if you need to take a rest week etc in future

Markus

Take the time you need to make something you are proud of.

Oblivious Sage

It actually reduces the total by only 10 posts per year. 52 weeks/year * 2 posts/week = 110 posts per year (52 weeks/year - (12 months/year * 1 week/month)) * 3 posts/week = 120 posts per year Totally worth it for the reliable posting schedule for the readers! No more trying to keep track of admin week and whether to check for an update; just check every Mon/Fri. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Redstone Random

Well at least your not transitioning to the feared admin fortnights. This... This is fine :)

Fast/slow is temporary, good/bad is forever. Slow and good is better than fast and bad. Don't feel bad about taking breaks, burn out is no joke.
