I had a good view. First through the gates were a few squads of local guards, the best of the best selected for the honor. A day’s pay to have people cheering for them instead of running down [Scoundrels]? A day where people were too busy celebrating to get in trouble? That was their kind of day!

Next up were the instruments, heralding the Triumph. A few soldiers, all with appropriate Sound classes, amplified their playing. Normally, they’d all have buff skills of various types, but they weren’t using them today. Too easy to throw someone off a hair, and then we’d commit the worst sin of all.

We’d look bad.

An honor guard was next, proudly flying the standard of Remus, the Senate, and the army. Three Centuries of soldiers followed them, marching in thunderous lockstep, sunlight gleaming off their polished and shined armor.

The Ranger Trainees were next, and I had no particularly strong feelings one way or another on their inclusion. There’d been a lot of arguing about it, that I unavoidably heard.

On one hand, they weren’t Rangers, they were Trainees. They didn’t have the same gravitas.

On the other, the number of Rangers and Sentinels at the capital was laughable. We needed warm bodies to fill in our numbers, and the Trainees did have their own sets of gear, and could march together while looking good.

The hundred-odd Ranger Trainees did fill out our numbers nicely, and the Rangers of Team 0 and Team 1 came after them, marching two by two.

Anything to extend the parade.

Most of the Sentinels were next. A few weren’t in town - Destruction, Brawling, and Toxic weren’t around, while Night and Acquisition were skipping the festivities. That only left seven Sentinels, before myself. They moved more casually, and some of the Sentinels were showing off what they could do. Ocean was being carried by waves on a chair of water, little ‘sea monsters’ popping out here and there as he moved along. Bulwark looked like he was on top of a short walking tower, while Nature had trees growing out of him.

Then came my chariot, and Auri did a hummingbird-giggle as the horses started pulling us along.

“Do not light the horses on fire.” I harshly whispered to Auri.

“Brrrpt…?”

“See, if you do, we’ll have to stop. If we stop, nobody will throw flowers at us. If nobody’s throwing flowers at us, how are you supposed to burn them?”

“Brrrpt!!”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

I was getting some nervous looks from the Ranger Commanders, who were in a loose circle around me. As the bosses, they got to bask somewhat in my glory.

Behind me was yet another Century of troops, and the support staff of Ranger HQ got the dubious honor of being the rearguard.

Then we were passing through the gates of the city, and the cheering hit me like a physical wall.

“Remember, you are only human.” Themis whispered in my ear, then I executed a skill every older sister needed.

[Ignore Annoying Younger Brother]. I hadn’t spent a ton of time at home with him, but I didn’t need the System to offer me the skill.

I already had it capped.

“BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRPT!” Auri shrieked at the crowds, spreading her wings and letting little puffs of multi-colored flame come off of her. She slowly flapped her wings, letting colorful embers spark shower around her.

“BRRRRRRRRRRRPT!” She cried once again, reveling in the attention.

And what attention it was.

We were traveling up the main avenue through the city, but the roads weren’t exactly cart and wagon only, nor had they been entirely cleared for us. There was significant room for crowds, and it was packed. Throngs of people were cheering at us, cheering at me, as flowers, seeds, and other small miscellaneous items were tossed at us. Auri ignited everything that came near us, flowers vanishing in a brilliant flash of fire - which the crowds loved. Word spread faster than a wildfire that anything thrown at us would turn into part of the show, and Auri got showered in flowers.

She was going to have SUCH a swollen head from all this.

I plastered a smile on, and carefully waved at the crowds. Even though I knew the [Charioteer] was invisible and in front of me, holding and guiding the reins, it felt weird. I was convinced I’d screw it up if I jerked too fast, so I was careful because of that arm.

And, of course, Auri was on my other arm, and I didn’t want to shake her off either. Hence, slow turnings, smiling, and waving.

I kept an eye on my mana, and to my great relief, I was doing just fine. Yeah, it was slowly ticking down, but it was going at a slow enough rate that I thought it’d last the entire time.

We hadn’t advertised that I’d be blasting a heal - heck, I’d told nobody I was going to do it - but when everyone got home? Thousands of people would notice. Would easily put one and one together - ‘That high level healer we just saw fixed us!’

Tens of thousands of people more would get small problems fixed before they noticed. The start of a cold. A brewing cancer. The scars a rash left. Diseases hiding in nerves, parasites burrowed into muscles. An aneurysm on the verge of bursting. They’d never know what I’d done, but I would.

Of course, there was a strong chance I’d have a mob of angry healers outside my door tomorrow. I was kinda kicking their livelihoods and income squarely in the family jewels, and I’d be mightily annoyed if the situation was reversed.

That wasn’t going to stop me.

We continued through the city, Auri occasionally taking flight. She’d circle around me, brrpting! happily, then flying over the crowds.

She was the darling of the show, the cute entertainment nobody expected.

Her only issue was her size - when she wasn’t near me, not enough eyes were drawn to her!

“Brrpt! BRRRPT!” Auri cried out as she landed on my armguard.

“Yeah! This is totally awesome!” I agreed with her.

“Brrrrpt!!!?”

“I don’t know when we can do this again.”

“Brrrpt…”

“Don’t be sad! Enjoy it while it lasts! BURN THE ROSE!”

“BRRPT!”

Reinvigorated, Auri went to it with gusto.

I didn’t care a ton about the adults, but the kids?

Ah, watching the kids was a joy in and of itself. Made the entire hassle worth it.

I was going to get a ton of little copycats, little kids wanting to be the totally awesome Sentinel Dawn. Most wouldn’t make it, but some would follow their dream.

Before long, we were pulling up in front of the Senate, where Augustus and the two other members of the Triumvirate were waiting, green laurels contrasting with my golden ones.

They’d done up the Senate, and it was looking grand. All shining marble, fluttering banners, and golden trimmings.

Technically, Augustus ruled with two other people. Practically, he was emperor.

The chariot stopped, and I carefully got off, Auri fluttering around me. To the cheers of the crowd, I slowly walked up the Senate steps, pausing one step below the Emperor.

The height difference plus the stair practically had me at kneeling height, which was one of those weird compromises that had been hammered out.

Augustus held up his hand, and after a few minutes, the crowds calmed down, and the cheering died out.

One of the members of the Triumvirate stepped forward, and started his speech.

“Friends, Remans, countrymen! Today, we celebrate the accomplishments of Sentinel Dawn! The third person to reach level 512, and unlock her third class, Dawn is the foremost protector of Remus! First a Ranger, then a Sentinel, Dawn has worked tirelessly her entire life to better our lives! From plagues to tsunamis, from rebellions to volcanic eruptions, Dawn is always at the tip of the spear, pulling people from the brink of death! The creator of the Medical Manuscripts, she has revolutionized the medical art in Remus! Teacher! Dutiful daughter! Sentinel Dawn is the model that every man and woman should aspire towards! She was a member of the Sentinel strike force that helped deal a devastating blow to the Formorians, allowing Imperator Augustus to finish them off!”

I kept my eyes still, although I wanted to roll them SO hard. Every other sentence the dude was saying was punctuated by wild cheering.

“Even more recently, Dawn discovered an enclave of creatures called shimagu, who have been secretly kidnapping and enslaving our citizens! In a bold, daring strike, Dawn single-handedly eradicated an entire city of these shimagu, freeing tens of thousands of our countrymen!”

That wasn’t how I remembered things going down at all. More blasted propaganda.

“The savior of Remus! SENTINEL DAWN!” He finished his speech, and I smiled and waved at the crowd, while Auri went nuts.

Interestingly, I could see her beak moving, but no sound coming out. Must have something to do with whoever was handling the Sound back here, amplifying the Triumvirate, and muting the rest of us so we wouldn’t screw it up. Otherwise, an errant cough would get magnified.

The second member of the Triumvirate stepped forward as the other dude stepped back. The crowd eventually quieted down.

“Remus was founded by brave [Warriors], fighting against monsters and the dark. The entire world around us was hostile, dangerous, terrifying. A woman couldn’t go down to the river without fear that a crocodile would leap out and eat her, and vicious dinosaurs would raid nurseries in the night. [Warriors] kept us safe. [Warriors] slew monsters. And the [Warriors] were all men. To laud their achievements, they were given a special status in Remus, which morphed into citizenship. There was no forethought on the matter, simply acknowledgement of dutiful, dangerous service to the people. Yet, over time, under the stewardship of the old Senate, this system has done us numerous disservices. Why, Sentinel Dawn, for all her accomplishments, couldn’t even become a citizen! She couldn’t even vote!”

Loud boos accompanied his announcement, people throwing out thumbs-down motions in their displeasure.

I didn’t believe a word he said for a second. The story sounded great, but there was too much ‘look at our brave military, fighting evil’, and ‘the prior government we replaced was bad’ for me to think this was anything other than an extremely carefully crafted speech, designed to sway public opinion in the direction he wanted.

In other words, a load of horseshit. I’d made peace ages ago that, in order to get what I wanted, I’d need to wade through some of this nonsense.

I didn’t like it, but it was life. Sometimes, I had to put up with the bad parts, to get the good parts. I wasn’t going to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

“Today, we rectify that! There will no longer be a difference between women and men in the eyes of the law! Women can now be the head of a household! Women can now own property! And lastly, women can now become citizens of our fine nation!”

There was a brief pause as the crowd processed what he was saying, then they exploded.

The noise had a distinctly higher pitch than usual to it, and the Triumvirate plowed on, over their - mostly - screams of approval.

“I would like to recognize Sentinel Dawn as the first female citizen of Remus!”

I held my arms up - Auri included - and basked in the cheers.

Fucking. Finally.

I was going to vote in whatever was next, no matter how inconsequential or tiny it was. Best baker contest? I was in.

Emperor Augustus stepped forward, and the cheers eventually died down. People only had so much voice.

“The shimagu are a menace. They are small parasites, able to take over a body and perfectly mimic their actions. A shimagu-controlled host talks like you. Walks like you. Looks like you. But is plotting against you, trying to best figure out when and where to kill you and your children. Only thanks to the operations of Sentinel Dawn were we able to discover their secret activities against us.”

Oh no.

I did not like where this was going. This was standard “how to whip up a population against a foreign enemy 101”.

Even I knew that!

“For decades, if not centuries, they have been infiltrating our lands. Invading bodies. Kidnapping and enslaving people, then starting their own human breeding program. They exist just outside our borders, preying on us!”

He paused a moment, whipping up the crowd. Listening to their jeers and boos.

“NO MORE! Sentinel Dawn has given us a detailed map of where they are. How they operate.” He paused again. “How to kill them.”

Cheers again, but they were bloodthirsty. I’d seen tamer crowds in the Colosseum when a dinosaur was killed.

“They are cowards! Treacherous, backstabbing scum of the worst type! I say, NO MORE! Never again! Not a single Reman more will be taken by them! Today, I am ordering the 4th through 15th legion to Port Salona, where they will be staging to fight back against the shimagu! We will burn their cities!”

Wild cheering.

“Salt their lands!”

More cheering, with thunderous applause.

“And we will not rest until they are all dead!”

Guthan

The shimagu will absolutely slaughter them. Sentinel dawn is the only person who can kill them beyond the sentinels. Their lowest level town guard is higher level than anyone in the regular army.

Nim

This is totally how politics gets done, though. Want to make a major change and not have people organize to oppose it? Immediately give them something else to focus on so by the time they come back to thinking about it, everyone has gotten used to it.

luda305

They were also at war with the ants for centuries. The end of it led to an emperor. A large army that doesn't get used can be a problem.

PlasmaticPi

True. Also note how he mentioned specific legions? I would bet those legions were either rebellious and are being sent to weaken them or that they had stagnated in levels which is not good for a country that needs to be able to defend itself from newly discovered neighbors.

Nim

Yep. Military governments need outside enemies.

Viva01

Hmmm it seems strange to me the jump to Elaine liking the kids being there but there being no description of them prior to that. Felt like a nice moment to read and I actually went back to see if I'd missed it but it was merely spoken of and then done, on to the next thing.

Viva01

"some of you may die... but that is a sacrifice, I am willing to make." sounds appropriate now no?

Andrew Moreton

Also the Shimagu are a menace, Evil by human standards and once word gets around about them if the Emperor has not taken firm decisive action against them he would be in trouble . Evil mind controlling parasites are bad, better to have a firm policy than riots and lynch mobs. Of course the Emperor better take personnal command of the army or if they win he will have a rival, if they lose he is in trouble anyway

Elaine

good chappie

TroubleFait

Oops! Elaine, here we go. The Shimagu episode isn't done kicking you in the shins.

Autumn

Don't forget there's also 3 elves who aren't so fond of shimagu presumably still fighting them

Summercat

And there's the price Elaine will have to pay. Was there any references to Shimagu in Illona's storylines?

Gines hellfire

Oh boy, that's going to be a problem.

Tarodan

Not to my memory, and I re-read it fairly recently. They definitely seem like something that Immortals wouldn't allow to exist.

Julie

Yeah, I wonder what those three would say if they heard this speech. Single-handedly eradication of a city of shimagu….

Will C

Oh here's a thought maybe we have been considering the immortality wars wrong. Technically the Shimagu are immortal and Dawn can make the sentinels immortal and the Vamps all ready are. So the empire starts a war they cannot win all hands on deck the vamps come out in force. The Shimagu eventually win and the future ban on healers with are effect heals suddenly makes sense.

Drendude

Ahh, the beginning of the actual Reman Empire. The shimagu aren't the important thing here, it's the expansion of Remus outside of the dead zone and becoming an empire in practice instead of name only. Humans and vampires are finally entering the world stage.

Khanalas

Brody Brown, this legion theory is far-fetched. Legion 3 is a dedicated revolt suppression force, legions 1 and 2 are probably on domestic defense duty. The rest are the regular army, and they only have one foreign enemy at the time of that declaration.

Nim

That's some conspiracy theory thinking there. I love it.

Khanalas

Yeah, Augustus will totally just throw the legions to suicide by shimagu. Because that's how the rest of their speech was, a literal and truthful description of events. It's not like Augustus has any military expertise to understand how to handle this problem, after all, he's Emperor Augustus, not General Augustus

Michael Otton

@ Khanalas I realize there's a 99% chance that you're being sarcastic but as Remus is based on Rome and Augustus came to power through (perceived) military exploits. Plus that now he has a enemy people wont sympathies with, armies worth of soldiers to give jobs to, the near assurance that no-one will actually want to conquer his land, and a society used to fighting massive wars against foes they can't really beat. While the armies wont be destroyed they will definitely be decimated at the least before he'll deploy his new anti-shimagu weapon. That can act effectively as an unlimited use highly targeted nuke that has the added benefit of converting enemy soldiers.

Xaim

On one hand, I feel this went really well. No assassinations, Shimagu in the crowds or anything. On the other hand.. The war is over, start the war?

Jams

I don't think it's that simple. Shimagu may have higher levels, but Remans will likely have better class quality and, more importantly, active skills. And your basic soldiers will have artillery mages to soften or outright destroy targets and provide backup. And the empire had the ability to be seen as glorious liberators and gain "volunteers" if they make good use of their healers, although that speech doesn't give me much hope of that. But I don't think it's completely off the table.

Jams

I am a little worried about Brawling though. Last we saw him he wanted to leave the dead zone and while I don't remember his skill set, he seems like a prime shimagu host.

mike

There's no way they can win this war, Remus has three individuals above level 512. Three. Unless they ally with the Elves or some other faction it almost certainly isn't going to go well.

Drendude

Wars grow people who survive them. When the fighting is outside of the dead zone, those three won't be the only ones above 512 for long.

zoli bassoff

Correct me if I am wrong but I read that women need to earn citizenship not just given it out right like men? If so I could not see Elaine being ok with that.

Jams

Iirc men also need to earn citizenship. I think one way is serving in the military. It might be heritable as well? I'm not sure about other ways.

Sean Achterman

Men need to earn citizenship as well. Roman citizenship wasn't something you just had by virtue of being born in the country - you either had to be the right family, or perform a service of some sort. Or buy it.

kfir with a כ

For a sex i forgot bullet time was capped, gave me a scare when it leveles

elijah pickett

Hopefully I'm not jinxing it, but yay no assassination! Still more trouble though

Gozar Games

Man Augustus just went full on order 66 with shimagu

Lictor Magnus

I’m not usually one for extermination when there can be peaceful coexistence, but only like what 1 in 1000 shimagu can actually love peacefully with their hosts. They’ve got to go!

Mr.Paranoid

I have a feeling like Dawn is going to be constantly requested by the army to mass-heal the legions just to be sure. And I think that just makes her less inclined with Augustus. Will be interesting to see her reaction and possible talk with Night.

Ranzbart

not really... order 66 is a conspiracy to stab an ally in the back. he instead just straight up did a hitler-esque speech.

Justin

Coexistence might be possible with enough oversight, but ya I don't see a body snatcher audit bureau being funded.

11037

No doubt Dawn will be critical to the war effort. And no doubt she will object, being the eternally naive person she is. I'll be the first to argue that the shimagu deserves sympathy that they can't help being born as the parasites the are. Doesn't mean that they shouldn't be wiped out, as their nature makes them irreconcilable enemies of humanity.

Matthew Lester

Well. They *do* deserve it. It would have been really funny if she got a Shimegu kill notification during the parade thinking about it.

Shoto

Weather bullet is Elaine's most experienced skill. Seriously, she's been under the gaze of a dragon for days, not to mention all the dangers she's witnessed. I can't wait for this skill to evolve, if Elaine takes a class related to speed, maybe time bullet will evolve, but it will be limited at a low level.

Joshua Little

Like the idea but even weak healers can kill Shimagu so the healer limit wouldn't help.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Shoto

@Jams ,he is a dual class warrior. He is literally the physically strongest human in all of Remus, even Bluebeard doesn't beat him in that regard. no doubt he would make a perfect host, should be around level 500 in both classes.

Kevinati

Tell that to the actual Romans when they were a simple city state. Story-wise, it's been intimated that Elaine/Deadzoners have a much more solid foundation and extremely more powerful/dense classes compared to the high magic zones. When they finally catch up, they are going to be in a complete league of their own compared to their same level counterparts.

Jean Banninga

I really don't get her issue with the shimagu, they're basically body rapists right, cause they ignore people's consent, and she would totally laserblast a rapist to ashes if she caught them in the act, so why is she upset with the shimagu? If they're in animals it's a different story but in a sentient creature? She really shouldn't have any issues healing them to atoms imo

Andrew Moreton

It is the wording of the oath, violence is only allowed in self defense or in the defense of patients

Jean Banninga

You'd think someone who's bodily autonomy has been stolen by a parasite would count, regardless of the parasites sentience, no? Idk the shimagu issue seemed a bit contrived to me I guess, that's all

Stuart Thwaites

Oh, this is BAD! Expansion is good for the economy... Successful expansion is good for the economy BUT using the shimagu ,and unseen enemy that takes people over, is a prelude to genocide.

PloofDoodle

Boy, that escalated quickly

Shoto

not exactly, Shimagus are weak against healing, but if it's a strong Shimagu, it can survive against a weak healer. we can think that any healer can kill shimagus as Elaine killed thousands, but she was over 400K of power and control during healing, and that's insane.

Shoto

Even so, it would take a few years for new people above 512 to emerge. And even then we don't know what the levels of the true Shimagus elites are. Elaine herself claims that the enemies defeated by the elves did not appear to be elites in the same way that Sentinels are elites. If they were the Shimagus Rangers, what level would the elites be? These elites that worry. Someone at level 600 maybe can be defeated by the Sentinels, after all they have much better classes, but someone at level 700?? only Night can handle someone like that.

Cirvante

Skills become more powerful the more specialized they are. Imagine a mage with an [Earthen Artillery] spell like the legions use. Can it kill a human? Very easily, but with sufficient defenses and Vitality can be survived. Now imagine a mage with a specialized [Human Disintegration] spell. Area of effect, unavoidable. That's what a [Healer] with a skill that removes parasites is to shimagu. Could a level 600 shimagu survive the [Parasite Removal] of a level 50 healer? Sure, but such a specialized killing spell can punch up hard. Like Toxic poisoning a level 1000 Formorian Queen at around level 300. Or like Hunting dropping through a Royal Guard's head like it's not even there. Healing is like Void magic to shimagu. And the legions aren't going to deploy weak level 50 healer. They are going to use their level 200+ healers from the frontline, as well as recruit additional specialists. Imagine how many healers like Markus the Pyronox or Caecillius the Plague Doctor would jump at the chance of massive leveling outside the deadzone against parasitic classers. Just opposing one Miasma mage in Perinthus allowed the healers to advance at a prodigious rate. Now it's publicly revealed that Dawn fought the shimagu, leveled her healer class to 512, unlocked her third class and rumor has it she got an immortality skill? They should have a ton of volunteers, if they play their cards right.

Daniel Sifrit

No, the Emperor isn't going to lead the Legion. His government is a bit weak now - that is one of the reasons he is sending his army out. They are too strong and their deserters are more than local guards can handle.

Cirvante

I would put the shimagu equivalent of Sentinels at around level 800. Yes, they can have six synergistic classes, but have no access to healing. That and the relative rarity of cooperative hosts should limit their maximum levels somewhat. Those high-level shimagu symbionts with six classes will wreak havoc on the imperial legions. But even they can be brought down with numbers through sheer attrition, since their wounds don't heal. There is also something to be said for the legions being battle-hardened veterans with high-quality classes fresh out of a war of extinction. I doubt that the vast majority of shimagu have any kind of experience with war. And then there's three powerful elven adventurers at Ochi that can be recruited to combat the shimagu symbiont classers. Awarthril, Aegion and Serondes would jump at the chance to have an army supporting them in their quest. Magical artillery support, healers, supports and dedicated meatshields would make their lives so much easier and heavily reduce the risk for them.

Cirvante

We've been over this so many times, Oath is silent on shimagu removal from sapient hosts. It's only Elaine's personal ethics that prevent her from going on a genocidal rampage. Well, she did just that when she finally snapped after realizing where her mystery meat came from in Ochi.

fbt

MC: "whoopsie daisies" Augustus: "not ur call (brandnew) citizen. STFU." MC: ...

Cirvante

Like the last genocide against the Formorians? Or the expansion into former dwarven lands after their genocide by dragonfire? Pallos is a rough world.

Cirvante

Elaine informed the Sentinels of the shimagu threat while still in Port Salona. Brawling knows about them. He may be a bit of an idiot, but not that much of a moron. He probably went south like Toxic.

Kagaros

100% this. I don't understand why her empathy with the shimagu goes up to 1000%. The same goes for the Formorians when she argued against exterminating them. Both can be easily categorized as dangerous pests that could do so much harm just by existing that it's better to remove them entirely like with mosquitos.

Kagaros

I mean expansion's good for the economy but not costly wars. If anything it's very bad for the economy. Normally such effort would be better spent settling the wilderness within their own lands. The only benefit to war with the shimagu is getting a higher average levels (cause humans are pathetically weak compared to shimagu) and securing their borders for the future when they solve the deadzone issue (or they'll just be immediately invaded once it happens). Oh and also the increased support and power for the dictator which is probably the main reason for the war

Kagaros

I think basically everyone could expect a war against shimagu except the very naive Elaine the moment you describe even a little bit about them.

cedi

While reading Augustus' part I was excpecting something like: Service Guarantees Citizenship; so all you female "hedge healers" join the army!

RedPine

Its a good thing the ace healer isnt going to vanish anytime soon. Leaving the borders of a sheltered low level zone for the first time, to fight a mini superpower that is on full alert, could end quite badly otherwise.

Shoto

@Cirvante ,true, but let's not forget that Elaine is far superior to an ordinary level 300 healer. Her knowledge makes her skills much more effective, her power and magic control during healing is monstrous, not to mention the amount of quality of Elaine's skills. We're not talking about people like Elaine, we're talking about people like that dwarf healer. With about 4k magic power and control while healing. I'm not saying that a level 250 Remus healer isn't a candidate to do Shimagus genocide, but it won't be as easy as you say.

Vladerag

I mean, I'd normally be against Speciscide, but I do have a standing exception for body snatchers. Plus, there is nothing like an external enemy to smooth over chaotic societal elements.

Vladerag

I mean, the main benefit to war with the Shimagu is dead Shimagu. I mean, are you going to ignore the ego overriding, mind controlling, body thieves that are enslaving people in a living hell so terrible that it makes conventional slavery look attractive? Plus, the level difference is misleading because Humans have better Class quality. So really, what is going to happen is the first few battles the Shimagu will slaughter Remus's army, but the survivors will level fast from that and end up with superior Classes and just as high levels.

Stuart Thwaites

#Cirvante the issue isn't genocide of the shimagu but everyone else. 'Why does that human have pointy ears and horns?' 'SHIMAGU!' 'Why are all these humans so short and why do the women have long, magnificent beards?' 'SHIMAGU!'

Stuart Thwaites

Oh I never thought about that! An enemy of everyone would certainly draw a lot of attention away from a sudden change to society ,like say... women being given equip rights?

Cirvante

Now that's just silly. Augustus may be eager to wage war on the shimagu for multiple reasons and genocide them in the process, but he's not a complete retard. He must have heard about the elves from Elaine's briefing, so he'll know better than to antagonize the race of perfect immortals. Not that Night would allow it anyway. There's also only so much territory humans can realistically occupy. It's also likely that they won't slaughter all the shimagu hosts, but rather heal them of shimagu and then force the humans and ogres under imperial rule. Genocide isn't really a sustainable way of conquest unless you wan't to rule over the empty wildernis.

Cirvante

A war is also a great opportunity for female warriors, mages and healers to earn citizenship and levels. Reman society will look quite a bit different by the end of it.

Stuart Thwaites

What about the ignorant masses? All they know about Shimagu is that they take you over and use you like a puppet. Augustus is using fear to direct their attention towards the Shimagu. Ignorance + fear = burning women for being witches

WANDERING LOST

It is also a good chance to move towards ending slavery if they can pull it off right, it is always good to keep your immortality dispenser feeling like you are really on her side to get more favorable deals. After all, if you have three hundred years to work on a project like ending slavery then it will happen eventually

Shoto

as well as training talented healers. Julius went to great lengths for Ranger teams to have a healer on the teams. And Elaine's getting about 30 healers from the army to train in proper rangers. With medical manuscripts, it will be possible to create a whole new generation of healers. Autumn is the biggest example of this, she received an advanced attribute class at level 32 which is amazing. Against Shimagus, healers will be very important. Not to mention that the soldiers were very happy if they had more healers in the army. Healers who can in the future may have skills to create immortals. The Emperor must have his eye on this. He can't control Elaine, but he can have some control over these new healers, maybe not in 10 years, but what about in 200 years?? someone like Elaine might come along.

Nothing like a war against shimagu to get a healer with access to her manuscripts and her Oath a customizable class at level 256. And at that point, they'd be stupid not to take immortality, which they can unlock through more shimagu killing to gain levels. Judging by how common that is in Iona's times, we're gonna have more immortality dispensers by the end of the war. Except they won't have Dawn's protections and power and will be much more vulnerable to coercion. My prediction is that by the end of the shimagu war, Augustus will have at least one serious rival and Remus will be thrown into civil war over immortality healers.

nah, I don't think so. First, Elaine created her own class and this is very rare, no normal person can do that. Second, there are still no studies or research on what an "immortal healer building" is. At most Augustus has some idea taking Elaine's background, but he couldn't say what a healer class that specializes in creating immortals is. third, it takes years or even decades for someone to reach Elaine's level of knowledge, even studying all the medical manuscripts. Because there was something Elaine did when she was 16, after that her knowledge was honed and refined even further, and that's a process that anyone else would take decades to achieve. Fourth, the oath is sorely needed, but I doubt someone sworn can level up as fast as Elaine, and most importantly, stay alive. There will be other healers who create immortals, but I doubt that one will appear in 100 years.

Under normal circumstances I'd partially agree with you. Getting a customizable class is very rare and would require staying at level 256 for decades and likely a certain degree of renown. However, the combination of getting out of the low-exp zone and doing a ton of shimagu healing while being in dangerous combat situations allows for stupidly fast leveling. Case in point, Dawn got about 100 levels up to 511 in a day. And while it takes years to level up a healer enough to be useful and study her manuscripts, they have been available for something like 5-6 years. And while the knowledge from the manuscripts may be required for the custom class, for shimagu killing you just need a really good image for parasite removal. Healers are going to level rapidly in this war, both from shimagu and healing the soldiers. They will get access to a ton of arcanite and if Augustus is smart, he'll make her Oath mandatory for combat healers. Because it allows a healer to go all in on Mana and Mana Regeneration while largely ignoring Magic Power and Control. And Oath-bound healers level faster than normal healers because they have to heal everyone, while healers tend to be very mercantile and selective. Every war has it's heroes, and in this one the healers will be the MVPs. Lot's of opportunity to make a name for themselves and get a custom class.

It would have been nice to see the initial reactions of both her mom and Artemis discovering what she was doing for equality

I don't understand why the crowd "mostly" supported women being equals as men. It seems like such a dramatic shift from their earlier depicted culture and values.
