Hey all!


December Announcements!

First: Web comic is chugging along! I poked the publisher to see if we had any sample panels I could share for this announcement, but they haven't gotten back to me as of this announcement. Shoot!

Second: Admin week is the week of the 26th this month. A few people have asked, so let me make it clear: That is the ONLY time that posts won't be happening this month. There is no Christmas break or anything. I'm not taking an extra week off. Similarly for January, there's just the normal admin week, nothing special for New Years. In other words - January 2nd there will be a chapter! Rejoice!

Third: Merry Christmas! For a few days around Christmas - likely the 24th - 26th - the legacy Iona tier ($10 for Iona-style content) will be reanimated, letting anyone who wants to join up. As long as you stay subscribed to the tier, you keep the same pricing. Anyone at the current Elaine tier ($10) can swap over, keep the same price, and get more content! Similarly, anyone at the current Iona tier can drop down and get a permanent discount. Easiest thing I could think of for a Christmas present, as my current artwork budget is 0 thanks to the web comic.

Fourth: I basically never shout out stories on Patreon, because you all deserve an ad-free experience. However, I'm bending my rule this one time for a special exception - Azarinth Healer. The story has been the king of Royal Road for years, and was THE story that directly inspired Beneath the Dragoneye Moons. I read the story, loved it, and asked myself "What if... Ilea focused more on her healing, and less on the punching?" Thus, BTDEM was born. The story can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/Azarinth-Healer-Book-LitRPG-Adventure-ebook/dp/B0BLRD8YPD/ . I've also written an April Fool's crossover with Rhaegar, who's just a fantastic fellow and deserves all the success.

Fifth: Audiobooks! They're in production. I don't know the timeline, but 7 and 8 are both with the narrator. I'll let you all know when they're released, and I hope Podium doesn't do any "well, we should give it some time" shenanigans.

In the web novel game where you only get 1 or 2 chapters a week as an intrinsic part of the format I always have at least 5 different stories that I'm reading azerinth healer was definitely worth being a part of the 15 or 20 bucks I spend on various patreon stories a month while it was being written.

Amazing news all round! Love Azarinth Healer. Rhaegar is finishing the story exclusively on Royal Road as well! Starring in December, no more being ahead on Patreon 😊 though I'll continue to support, like I would you in the same scenario!

Same for me. Some of the reviews on Royal Road whinging about how implausible the depiction of sexism in Remus is put me off a bit. Then I met Elaine in one of the crossovers and thought that she seemed fun so I started reading her story. When the topic of sexism appeared, I was confused. The handling of it was fine. Lesson learned - be wary of reviews. A crossover with Azarinth Healer is also how I discovered Mecanimus' brilliant work. I think this means that Azarinth Healer is a gateway drug and Rhaegar is the dealer.

Ah sure. I wait for it to fully hit RR before doing a paperback, so I get an extra set of eyes on typos and the like. I think of paperbacks as "premium" so to speak, and I want to MAKE SURE that people have as few typos as possible when I release them

I really don't get all the love for Azarinth Healer, it might have an interesting plot but it really isn't very well written, although I suppose the "heavily edited" version on Amazon might have fixed that. I'm glad it inspired this story, but I consider this orders of magnitude better then it.

Ooh, I'll happily take another recommendation to read in-between these chapters. On Kindle Unlimited too, nice. Also, while I appreciate the dedication to new chapters, stay healthy over the holidays and don't burn yourself out!

The starting chapters aren't going to woo anyone, but the quality of writing and storytelling improves with time. Also the world itself has quite a few interesting concepts. It is no way perfect (*cracks neck*), but it is an entertaining read.

I went through about 80 chapters of azarinth healer. It seemed to have a very basic “find problem: punch problem” formula. Btdem characters are interesting and there are more ways of resolving tension other then “I punched it harder”

I enjoyed the Azarinth Healer for a while but got tired of it. The writing is not as strong as our current story, and eventually MC gets so overpowered it gets boring.

How far did you get? In the original Royal road version, the writing improved massively somewhere around chapters 50-60, and Rhaegar also went through and fixed a lot of issues some time ago so if you didn't get that far, or if you tried it more than two years or so ago I would definitely try it again. Also yes I have just finished reading the new version and it is definitely better now.

The Amazon release had a massive amount of editing done, and the quality of the writing shot up as a result. I’m someone who was put off Azarinth Healer initially because of the quality of writing early on, but I really enjoyed the Amazon version.

Azarith Healer was really great at first. When Ilea was thrown into a dangerous world trying to survive, and we saw some interesting plot development. The exploration to the North offered a great piece of worldbuilding and discovery. However, eventually the story turned into the repetitive "Ilea find strong monsters, Ilea kill monsters, Ilea level" formula. That was boring, and honestly disturbing when she wasn't killing the monsters for survival or protection, but for personal power. There's still interesting worldbuilding and story in-between the mindless monster slaughtering, but getting to it is too much of a chore. I feel like it was a story of great potential, that eventually ran into the problem of a system where killing is the only way to level (or every other way is orders of magnitude slower).

No work is perfect, but I find unlike with logistical systems and projects it is generally better to define a creative endeavor by its strengths rather than its weaknesses. In this regard, Azarith Healer was quite a success in my book, particularly given that this was the author's writing debut. I don't want to get into a silly AH vs BTDM comparison argument which is where conversations like these tend to lead, so I will just comment a bit on what I found compelling about the AH as a story. Most good works of fantasy will generally have a strong central premise that is either a unique vision of the author's or a fresh take on an old idea. For me this world-building is what sets science fiction and fantasy apart from other genres of fiction and I think just about everyone can agree this is one of the aspects in which Azarith Healer has truly excelled. Whereas most fantasy stories will have one or two unique ideas the story is built around AH has half a dozen or more really fresh ideas that it explores, each of which could have served as a central world-building role. The overarching meta-plot is a thing of impressive imagination even if the short-term conflicts are a bit too battle-dependent and repetitive. Once you get past the wobbliness of the writing in the early portions of the story the characters are a joy to follow and the rewrite has gone a LONG way toward correcting some of those early character foibles and the over-reliance on combat/litrpg elements. I dropped the story at one point due to the combat arcs being a bit of a slog, but I am glad a picked it up again. It really is a great story despite some rough patches.
