Pretty big bombshell from Roswaal at the end there.

This episode is just fantastic. I love all the interactions that Subaru has with the witches, they’re all so fascinating. You dove a lot into Daphnes deal with gluttony, so I won’t dive into the greatness of that as much, but I’ll say that I love Minerva, the Witch of Wrath, being a healer. It’s just so unexpected, and not usually what one associates with wrath. And of course, Echidna. She’s the standout still, just absolutely fascinating, while also being very seductive and somewhat disarming compared to the pure eccentricity of the other witches. Also wanted to note that I love how the animators have been portraying Subarus descent in mental stability over the past many episodes. Many more wrinkles and tired eyes whenever he’s drawn. And it’s shown in the dialogue as well, he’s falling into some old traps again. I absolutely love the direction and audio design this episode as well, which is most accentuated during the “I love you” scene. Re: Zero is probably the best anime I’ve seen in its use of audio and music. It’s always so unique and like this episode, manages to breach the show and whisper into the audiences ear. And finally, Roswaals speech at the end, very revealing, and super interesting. This episode going into the next stretch of many episodes is one of my favorites in all of anime, so I’m super excited to see your reactions. Great thoughts as always, hyped for the next one!

what I always think about when watching this show is what happens if Subaru grows old and dies of old age would he just get stuck in a "purgatory" where he is an old man experiencing the same checkpoint dying of old age forever just going insane, also just not a big reaction from Roswell saying "try not to make any mistakes next time Natsuki Subaru"!? LMAO

Peak zero day!!! Great take on the meaning of Gluttonys speech to subaru, i had never fully thought about that

Alex would be killed for heresy so fast in 40k. 😂

I mean, he's been dropping hints for a while, and I think Alex already mentioned that he thought Roswaal might know. Back at the beginning of Season 2 there was a moment when Subaru said something like "this time" and Roswaal reacted somewhat knowingly.

Mjw

Yeah but this moment felt more like a confirmation rather than a speculation of if he knows so I was just expecting him to at least say something but he was just kinda brushed pasted not that’s I’m mad he didn’t say anything I’m just more surprised than anything

No doubt, even assuming I could survive all the cursed artifacts... I'd probably end up an archbishop to a witch who wasn't that into me.

The reason for the apperance of The witch of envy at the end of the episode is that subaru said "I returned from death" to echidna in the previous episode and The witch of envy tried to reach him with her hands as many times as he repeated it at that time, but couldn't because of some reason.

The whole meeting the witches gave me Team Rocket vibes.

The show is doing a fantastic job of making you feel exactly what you are feeling for Echidna in this moment. She is an oasis in what seems like an endless desert.

Not a LN reader myself, but coming back to this ending again, I think one reading of Satella's sudden appearance could be Subaru's actions within the graveyard. While it is a non-physical realm, perhaps Subaru revealing Return by Death there has similar consequences in the real world. In season 1 Satella appears on multiple occasions when Subaru tries to tell others about his condition. And it's almost as if her manifestation is intensifying as the season progresses. Perhaps this is Satella becoming so overwhelmed with envy knowing Subaru confessed their secret to another witch that she literally possesses Emilia in order to reveals herself in physical form. This is 100% speculation on my part and not a spoiler.

Hu, I dunno if that's true, it's probably not the entire story even if, but it would make a weird amount of sense — I didn't realize this before, like, at all.

Adel Bouzazia

My assumption is not without some kind of proof since in the episode where he says tito Echidna that he can return by death, we have some frames of the hand of the witch of envy reaching out to him and I'm not tlaking about the flashback bit. But you're right it's only a very probable possibility there might be more to it or it might be something else altogether.

Great episode, and great reaction, as always. There are two pieces of cut content that I'll discuss. In the light novels, Echidna reveals here that her soul was sealed in the Sanctuary at the request of the Divine Dragon, Volcanica (the one mentioned in season 1, who entered into a Covenant with the Royal Family of Lugunica to protect their Kingdom). In the Web novel, this is mentioned during Subaru and Echidna's first meeting, and there it's stated that originally the Witch of Sloth's soul was supposed to be sealed, but Sloth just beat the shit out of the dragon. This was done in the hopes that it would help the Dragon, Sage, and Sword Saint in killing/sealing the Witch of Envy. There was a scene that I believe was cut in the adaptation from web novel to light novel. During Subaru's interaction with Daphne, she reveals her left(?) eye to him, and when he looks at it he becomes so ravenous that he partially eats if his own hand without even thinking about it. Was a very gruesome scene that further feeds into Daphne's ideas on Gluttony. That eye was also apparently weaker then her other eye, so now the blindfold makes sense. It's also revealed that the coffin she's sealed in is actually a witchbeast that she created to move her around. It feeds off her waste products to move around and feed her. God, that scene with Satella is always so chilling, great sound design. And Roswaal's lines at the end are so cool. "If you wish to walk through Hell, then I will gladly accompany you. If you wish to live in Hell, then Hall is what I shall strive for." 🔥🔥🔥. Re:Zero loves to give characters cool lines, Subaru just doesn't get any of them. He's too much of a goofy little guy. Good reaction, as always. Can't wait for the next one
