Lol!! Now I can't get the image of Einar with his dirty cloak joining the Karasuno boys for some refreshing hill sprints out of my mind. Let's pause these sad episodes for a second and wonder about what position Einar and Thorfinn would play in a volleyball game. Personally, Einar seems like a solid receiver and Thorfinn maybe a middle blocker for his speed and agility similar to Hinata. Can't we just plop these characters into Haikyuu and see them all live a happy, peaceful and volleyball filled life instead!!

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x16 “Thank you for watching Vinland Saga Episode 16 ‘Great Purpose’! When I draw action scenes in manga, I draw curves that represent the trajectory of swords and fists and explain things like, “it’s a great offence and defence!”, but anime doesn’t need to do that. So, you draw all the movements. Thank you very much to all the animation staff. The serpent sword is just as Gramps said, and it’s shape you don’t see in Europe or Northern Europe in this era. Like a Japanese sword, the blade is only on one side. It is a sword called Shamshir made in the Middle East. Actually, more than that, there are amazing decorations such as a grip, it was a hassle to draw. A manga artist who draws patterns on clothes etc properly is amazing! To tell the truth, even the the belts and sleeves of Thorfinn’s clothes have a nice card weaving patterns. Cuuuuutttteee! It takes a lot of time. Snake has a cause, and so does Thorfinn. Really … In the end it comes down to strength. But neither Snake nor Thorfinn hate each other at all. I guess I wanted to draw a situation where I don’t know what to do! That’s all there is in this world. It would be nice if a God could pop up and judge everything from dispute resolution to cake cutting. ‘God’s judgement is absolutely correct. Don’t go against it.’ It is easy, after all. But it feels like it’s not free. I don’t know what to do! I wonder if it’s important to worry about it. I want the patience to worry and worry and keep worrying. Don’t get frustrated, don’t throw tantrums, keep worrying quietly. I think there are some problems that need to be worried about for the rest of our lives. Although, if you worry too much non-stop, you’ll get depressed, so take a break. But if the world is all about “I don’t know what to do!” It’s fine to fly with just one body, and it’s fine to separate righteousness and evil.”

To me this marks the start of what is probably the best 9 episode stretch of any show I've ever seen.

This is what Arnheid said in the manga when Einar asked her why she did what she did: "I... I'm not sure why myself... Why did I go see Gardar last night? Maybe I was still dreaming... Maybe deep inside my heart, there was still a hope that Gardar, myself, and my new child could start all over. A stupid self-deluded fantasy. I'm... I'm despicable, aren't I? Thinking only of myself all this time... while Gardar had always been thinking of me... All I could say was "sorry" in return. The reason Gardar had escaped slavery, killed other people, was only for my sake and Hjalti's, and yet I... I was prepared to blame Gardar for everything and let him die." They might have changed it cause it was too self-deprecating and they want this all to be a bit hopeful, or maybe just to fit the length of the episode they needed, but, it more directly explains her actions and willingness to pursue this escape despite having told the boys they should all wait and do nothing. It's probably safer to forget him and continue the life she had so far, but she felt awful somewhere inside, so couldn't actually do it. Probably only compounded when she saw him in the fort apologizing, and not the crazy beast she had assumed he just "was" now. I don't think killing people intending to put you and your wife to death or into sex slavery is something to criticize Gardar too much for, at least personally.

Something to keep in mind. Thors himself, the one person in the show that's closest to being "a true warrior", said that he wasn't a warrior yet, since he needed his sword and fists to resolve problems. Not killing others is as far as Thors got on his path to being a true warrior. For Thorfinn, if we give him the out of just fighting with his fists and not killing others, then he only ever reached Thors' level, not surpassed him. Both Thors and Askeladd wanted Thorfinn to go further than that, and to do that, Thorfinn (at least in his mind) cannot resort to violence even for self-defense. He needs to resolve conflict in another way to ascend to the highest level, and doing that in a world full of violence and justifications for violence will be tough. Practically, this is probably not ideal, but thematically that's where Thorfinn's character needs to go.

The show itself is a farm due to the amount of GOATs in it.

Arnheid's voice actress deserves all the accolades for this role but particularly this episode. That crying went through the screen and stabbed me in the gut when she talked about how she still wanted to dream

so great. I was missing this dose of Goodwin so much haha!

That does add a whole other perspective to it, yeah. I can't exactly describe my issue with Gardar. It's not his desire to save her or the fact that he is using force to do so. I think there's something of a presumption on his part, and an implicit request of her that actually reflects the fact that HE is looking to be saved. Which is not to dismiss his actions entirely, it's very romantic and noble and courageous. But there's SOMETHING ELSE there too that feels like it puts the whole thing on Arnheid's shoulders, when she didn't necessarily ask to be put in that situation. To be sort of at the ultimate point of being a hero for her, he would be stronger, less broken (not that I blame him for his state)

The real question at the heart of Vinland Saga is... how did Arnheid get Garder under the bed? Did she use her Thorfinn-level strength to lift it? Or did she just roll him under there?

Nick

When your loved one is near death you likely would get that adrenaline kicking in, and you wouldn't have to lift it entirely just enough to slip Gardar under. Sverkil seems pretty frail so likely not super heavy. I feel like it's reasonable for her to lift it When humans panic/are in danger they're capable of some pretty crazy things. I've read stories about mothers who get crazy moments of adrenaline when they're trying to protect their kids for example

Musicisum

Yeahh I get you, I meant it mainly as a joke lol I just like the idea of her rolling him under there like a cardboard tube
