This episode is one of the primary examples of why I love storytelling and have a deep appreciation for those who put together such amazing worlds and characters. This episode is my favourite in all of Vinland Saga (even better than 2x9). It's what made two seasons' worth of build-up and character growth worth it. I mentioned in an earlier episode how Thorfinn needed to go beyond Thors and reach the highest ideal he could on his path to being a true warrior, and I truly believe he did that here. For one moment, for one conflict, even if it was just for a skirmish over a farm, Thorfinn surpassed his father. He resolved a conflict without raising his fists. He didn't rely on a sword or violence, the only thing he needed was his principles. We all understand that this is a very unique situation, and this type of conflict resolution strategy likely won't work in most cases, but regardless of that, I believe we saw the highest ideal win. I also like how the warriors there ended up having complete respect for Thorfinn by the end of the bet. Thorfinn was able to win them over in their own battle but under his own vision. I think it takes someone to be at a certain level of mastery to appreciate the skills and talent of another, so for these warriors who know nothing but war and violence, it says a lot that they were moved enough to acknowledge Thorfinn as a true warrior, without him landing a single strike. "I have no enemies," I'm sure Thors would be so proud of the man Thorfinn has become. Again, it's obvious that this won't work in all situations, the world is too nuanced for that, but I'll take solace in that it worked even once.

Amazing episode, I think that Canute showing he can't stop waves is such a powerfull scene and great way of showing he is powerless. Einar speach about making farm yourself instead of taking it from others is also amazing to me, so well writen dialogue.

You mentioned someone asking if you went to church sometimes and I kinda wondered that because the “pearls before swine” thing you mentioned one or two videos ago was something I had heard very recently before that at a church. Wondered if that was a coincidence.

I was looking forward to you hearing Canute's re-affirmation of ideals, because he is right to an extent. When he says "I am the only one capable of controlling them," there is a tint of ego, yet it does not come without proof - he is ruling a massive territory and commands absolute respect of the Vikings. It does not come from a place we may idealistically agree with (a belief in human goodness or the growth overpowering atrophy), and yet, given his base assumptions he has come to the path that he believes harms the least people. His indifference to Einar's plight is because he's accepted the suffering of the few to benefit the many, and yet, he does not silence Einar or dismiss his words, he allows this nameless (to most of the people present) slave to chew him out, and even fully admits to his underlying desire for Ketil's wealth, dismissing the initial lie. I'm sure other people have mentioned it to you but the stopping the waves moment is directly taken from a moment in history where Canute supposedly did stop the waves. And to his credit, everyone stood there in silence at first as if he did, meaning they believe his power to be so absolute they actually considered him capable of it.

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x22 “Thank you for watching Vinland Saga episode 22 ‘Emperor of Rebellion’! The main character who gets beaten up. The punches reproduced in animation seems to be painful. And I remembered the first time in a while that Thorfinn should be missing two teeth on his left side. Urmm, that’s it… That’s milk teeth that fell out. That’s right…. Broken teeth, chipped ears, sword wounds, missing fingers, you have to remember them properly. I often forget this! When you see Thorfinn’s laughing mouth later, you might think, “Yukimura, his teeth has healed.” It’s okay. (Just gunna say the fact that Thorfinn laughing is a certainty now feels me with such joy) Music is amazing… it affects the impression of the scene. The music of “I have no enemies.” Thank you, Yutaka Yamada. (Seriously Yamada is an absolute master of soundtracks) Even in manga, I wanted a function to make such sounds in a book. Like a picture book for babies. If I could write “Please press the music button 8” in the centre of the panel of “I have no enemies.” Thank you for respecting the original work soo much. Isn’t Canute a funny guy. Someone who claims to stop the waves. This is an anecdote of King Knut the Great. It seems that there are multiple patterns, such as actually stopping the waves and saying, “God is great and I am powerless” without stopping the waves. I decided to add my own pattern. Einar and Canute. The values of the field/land don’t fit. For Canute, the land is a number and a map, but for Einar, the land is touch and smell. (LOVE how he put this) I don’t know which one is correct, but I don’t think the two will get along unless their values are aligned. How to get along with a frowning, tired king in a black cloak?” (Seriously don’t understand why the anime decided to have him in a red cloak and not the black one from the manga. It looked soo cool!)

In the actual historical account, Canute did not stop the waves though. The purpose of the exercise was the same as it is here, to demonstrate that the king is powerless compared to God.

I completely agree with you when you say that, how Thorfinn dealt with this isn't a solution that can be won over every iteration. However I think for this situation it works and in another situation I would like to believe that Thorfinn will look for another "first option" That minimizes blood shed again. To me Thorfinns character is inspiring. (that's why I wrote all this haha) I do always love listening to your input on certain tricky situations like this one and I really like the influence you have from the main man Sun Tzu, such as the "might is right" and having a large amount of force can lead to overcoming without the use of such force. Once again I loved the reaction and sad to see this show ending. I'm excited for the next episode and just glad that Goodwin posted again :D PS Also getting pretty excited for HunterXHunter. I can't wait to see those reactions and what your insight may be with the characters in that one ;) (I hope this isn't too long of a comment haha)

Chris Sharpe

I never fail to get chills when Thorfinn yells “Sixty-eight more. Get it over with. I am a busy man.” Thorfinn doesn’t punch, but he is clearly a fighter.

Love this episode. Thorfinns ideals are put to the test. And it’s not the end. He’ll continue to be put in many unique and nuanced scenarios where he has to put his ideals to the test, and he has to come up with solutions other than bearing hit after hit from a Viking warrior. It’s inspiring and beautiful to watch him do this throughout the rest of the manga, and it feels true. And as much as I love this episode, a lot of it is setup for the next episode, which I think is the best episode of the entire series. Can’t wait to see your reaction.

Lalo

Cnut the great did not stop the waves he just did it to show his humility

Thorfinns voice actor (Yuto Uemura) brought back the season 1 voice when he called drott middle part. What a performance

From when you mentioned your close friend asking about church through to the rest of the video, the way you phrased your perspective and insight was poetic. For context, I'm agnostic and don't follow any particular religion; however, I cultivate various aspects from several of them and incorporate them into my life since I believe ancient religions (that have survived today) embody some concept of the "objective truth", the universe, all of existence, or God to be able to have survived this long. Your views on being the most human you can be and that there's no benefit to resisting the natural pull to being a good person was insight that provided a ton of perspective and provides something to take with me as I reflect on my day, later tonight. As always in all your videos, your perspective is valued and noted and I'm appreciative for you and your videos.

There is an interesting touch that when Einar confronts canute in an aggressive manner and out of touch with the heart of canute, thorfinn does get to him, as you pointed out, but canute doesn´t answer thorfinn and instead answers to the easier target, Einar. showing that he is far more conflicted with thorfinns question and decides to ignore it.

Setting up a summoning circle for the next haikyuu episode (I hope you're okay)

agoodwintv

I'm good! Sorry, I took a visa run to Cambodia and just been exhausted since. Want to make sure I give the next episodes my all cause I know they're hotly anticipated. I'll be back Wednesday with 2 episodes

Chris Sharpe

@A Goodwin TV Of course, don’t rush. The impatience just comes from love of the creator.

Aanvik

What they said^ No need to apologize I'm just being a greedy bastard

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

@Goodwin You probably didn't but did/have you visited Angor Wat? I have wanted to go to that temple in Cambodia for a long time now. Its the largest religious site in the entire world, many times larger than the Vatican itself. Incredible architecture and quite a mystery as to when and how it was built.

Ryan

benj: just my two cents, but I thought Angkor Wat was amazing. If you can (it'll be filled with tourists, but still...) go to Angkor Wat on either the Summer or Winter Equinox (or close to it), when you can see the sun rise immediately in line with the peak of the center spire. The nearby temple at Bayon is perhaps more impressive in terms of the ruins, but the detail and clear mysticism of everywhere in Angkor Wat is really something.

agoodwintv

Glad he touched on the difference between Einar and Canute. It really came through in that interaction

agoodwintv

@Jasmine Tea Enjoyer I did! It was really the one "cannot miss" thing for me on the trip. I started in Phnom Penh but did 2 days in Siem Reap just for that. It was better than I expected. I didn't expect the scope of it at all. Turns out, they recently discovered through aerial imagery that there are still a handful of tombs underground, so the full thing hasn't even been excavated yet, all these years later

agoodwintv

@Ryan I lucked out with the tourist situation by happy accident. I went on a sunrise tour but got on the bus with the wrong group. As a result, my group was about 20 minutes behind all the other groups. Ultimately, we still made it for sunrise, but we ended up having pretty much all areas to ourselves the entire time

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

@Ryan @Goodwin Damn I am so jealous. One day for sure I will get there. I have heard the ruins near Angkor Wat are just as impressive and expansive, I want to explore as much as possible that area. Like you said, the mysticism of Angkor Wat is apparent even just through pictures and videos I have seen. Who really knows when it was built, there are many theories… it could potentially be much, much older than what the official narrative says it is. The astronomical alignments are truly astounding… they had to have had more advance technology than we are currently aware of.
